  • Thame Swap Shop Great Success

A FREE exchange of unwanted items, or Swap Shop, held in Thame on Saturday proved to be very popular ? so much so that a second one has been planned for February.
A giant panda, a bed side table, clothes, DVDs, toys and a variety of bric-a-brac were amongst the unwanted items taken along to Thame town hall, as a way of diverting waste that would otherwise end up in landfill sites.

Thame Waste Action Group (TWAG) is holding another Swap Shop on Saturday, February 20, from 10am to 1pm in the Town Hall, High Street, Thame.

For further information please contact Alison Isherwood, 21st Century Thame Project Officer on 07944 175633 or e-mail ai@21stcenturythame.org.uk

  • Forty Years Of French Exchange

Lord Williams’s Lower School is this year celebrating the 40th anniversary of its Year Nine exchange with the Marcel Gambier School in Lisieux in France.
Today, 24 French pupils visiting until January 26, and their teachers, were welcomed by the Mayor of Thame, Nigel Champken-Woods, and two of them got to try on the Mayoral chains.
Cllr Champken-Woods explained the responsibilities of the town council, its committee structure and spoke of the differences between English mayors and French mayors, the latter having a typical annual budget of 15 million Euros, compared with his own council’s of half a million pounds.

The visitors were particularly facinated with the story behind the town’s emblem on the Mayor’s chain, based on the design on an ancient ring, found as part of the so-called ‘Thame Hoard’. This collection of coins and rings is thought to have been the proceedings from a robbery centuries ago and then thrown hurriedly in the River Thame where it was discovered in the twentieth century.
    See Link
for more information about the Thame Hoard.

During their stay with Thame host families, the
French pupils have visited London museums, the Roman Baths in Bath and other famous landmarks.

  • Dramatic Drop In Child Cycling Injuries

ROAD safety experts at Oxfordshire County Council have expressed their delight at a dramatic fall in the number of child cyclists injured on the county’s roads.
The council is also celebrating the fact that 2006 was also a record year for the number of children taking part in the council’s cycle training scheme.
In 2006, 34 young people were injured, which is the lowest figure since 1979, and less than half the 89 children injured in 1997, when the council started keeping records. The figures are:-

    1997 89
    1998 70
    1999 86
    2000 64
    2001 73
    2002 44
    2003 52
    2004 44
    2005 47
    2006 34

In 2006 a record 3,657 children took up free cycle training and the the council has 700 volunteers who help deliver the scheme to largely primary school children aged 9+.
Wendy Jennings, Oxfordshire County Council Road Safety Officer, said: “I am thrilled that so many children have taken part in our training schemes and that the number of injuries has declined so much. What a credit this is to our volunteers who put in so much hard work. It must be a delight to them to learn that their efforts have had such an impact.”

Councillor David Robertson, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “It cannot be a co-incidence that the number of children trained has gone up while the number of injuries sustained has plummeted. This is an example of forward planning and thinking providing value for money for people in Oxfordshire as well as safeguarding our communities.”

  • Plea For New Police Community Support Officers

A PLEA for more people to apply to become Police Community Support Officers, was made at a public meeting held in Thame to roll out a new Neighbourhood Policing initiative by Thames Valley Police.
TVP’s Martin Judd, who is currently responsible for trying to recruit five more PCSOs for the Thame area, said at the meeting on Monday that he was struggling to find applicants. He made a plea for local people to step forward for the role, which Thame Town Cllr Owen Davies called: “a great asset to the town.”

Police community support officers are uniformed support staff whose role is to support the work of police officers working within a community.
They use their limited powers to tackle lower level crime, disorder, nuisance and anti-social behaviour which helps free up time for regular officers to concentrate on more serious crimes and incidents.

They carry out high visibility patrols aimed at helping dramatically increase the police service presence throughout Thames Valley and have a crucial role to play in the drive towards neighbourhood policing.

  • Motorists Warned After Robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses and have issued safety advice to motorists following a robbery on the A4010 near Princes Risborough at about 4.50pm yesterday (17/1)
A 31-year-old man was driving a black Honda Type R approaching the Black Horse roundabout when a white van drove into the back of his car.
Following the collision, both vehicles pulled off the main road, whereby two men from the white van approached the victim. One man reportedly said he had a knife.
At the same time, he held something to the victim?s side. The victim immediately backed away, but he had left his car running and it was driven off.

Det Sgt Jason Liles, the officer investigating the robbery, said: ?We think before the collision the transit van may have performed a dangerous overtake which may have caused other drivers to take notice of it.
?I would like witnesses to come forward and provide any information which could help us find the robbers.
?They may think what they have seen is insignificant, but it could prove invaluable to the investigation.
I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who has taken details of or has information in relation to the van.
?Please contact me at High Wycombe Police Station on 0845 8 505 505 or, if you don?t want to talk to police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.?

    * Ensuring where possible that a phone call is made to family or friends confirming where they are, what has happened and also taking note of the registration of the other vehicle (all prior to getting out of their vehicle)
