  • More Jazz “With Balls” In Thame (Contributed)

The 20th Concert Jazz Gig is a Romantic Jazz night out on Wednesday, February 14, at its new home, Thame Snooker Club, St Andrews Court, Wellington Street, Thame; Jazz on Cue ? with Balls!

Remember Tubbs! – The SIMON SPILLETT Quartet.
The Quartet will be playing a “Tribute To Tubby Hayes” programme, including many of Tubby’s own compositions. This will also include music written by Tubby which was never recorded on commercially issued albums – something of a coup!

    Featuring :-
    Simon Spillett – Tenor Sax
    John Critchinson – Piano
    Alec Dankworth – Bass
    Spike Wells – Drums

Reviewing Simon’s quartet for The Evening Standard, Jack Massarik observed that “though born in 1974, a year after Hayes death at 38, Spillett has absorbed the master’s saxophone style to an uncanny degree” and encountering the quartet and “hearing them play Tubby Hayes originals like Off The Wagon and Song For A Sad Lady was like time-travelling back to the future” as Simon “produced a whole compendium of high-precision Hayesian licks”.

Simon Spillett – Musician, Tutor, Composer and Jazz Writer, has been described as “a fiery saxophonist in the mould of the late Tubby Hayes”, and it is Hayes who his work is most often said to recall, observers noting that Simon shares a fondness for fast tempos and sheer desire to create exciting no holds barred jazz. Indeed, Simon’s quartet pays tribute to Tubby’s genius at its club and concert performances, reprising some of Hayes own compositions, those associated with him and originals written by Simon dedicated to the spirit of the late great saxophonist. Tubby remains Simon’s favourite jazz musician but he also loves and admires the work of many other saxophonists, including John Coltrane, Evan Parker, Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Dick Morrissey, Don Byas, Peter King, Stan Robinson, Branford Marsalis, Danny Moss, Sonny Rollins, Paul Gonsalves, Wayne Shorter, Alan Skidmore, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin, Zoot Sims, Joe Henderson, Bobby Wellins, Dexter Gordon, Al Cohn, Ronnie Scott, Junior Cook, Stanley Turrentine and Bob Berg.

  • Fire Chiefs Warn Against Microwaving Your Dishcloth!

FIRE chiefs are warning against the advice of environmental experts in America who claim that sterilising dishcloths in microwave ovens kills 99% of germs.
A recent report by a Professor Gabriel Bitton, an expert in environmental engineering at the University of Florida, claimed that 99% of germs contained in a kitchen sponge or dishcloth would be killed if the item was placed in a microwave oven on full power for two minutes.
However, Oxfordshire fire chiefs say that doing this could result in catastrophe after a Telford resident’s microwave oven recently caught fire during an attempt to sterilise a dishcloth. Fortunately, the fire was contained within the oven but the incident could have been far more devastating.

Julian Green, Risk Reduction Manager, said: “Attempting to sterilise a dishcloth or kitchen sponge in this way is extremely dangerous. There are too many variable factors such as the capacity and power of the microwave oven or the moisture content of the dishcloth or sponge, which may or may not cause fire. The potential for scalding oneself is another likely hazard. We strongly advise people not to sterilise cloths in this way.”

  • Report Over-Packaged Goods To Trading Standards

WASTE managers at Oxfordshire County Council have added their voices to the current national calls for the amount of packaging on food and other consumer products to be cut.
Large amounts of cardboard, clingfilm and other plastics come with most goods that are bought in the shops. Environment Minister, Ben Bradshaw has invited people to take their own action and report examples of over-packaging to their local councils.

Andrew Pau, Head of Waste Management at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “I am glad to see that this debate is now taking off at a national level and in the corridors of power.
“People in Oxfordshire are great at recycling and getting better all of the time. We are among the best in the country. However the simple fact is that if there was less packaging on consumer goods the issue of what to do with waste would be less acute.
“This is all about tackling a problem at root. At the moment we create problems for ourselves as a society by allowing this kind of extravagant packaging to carry on as the norm.”

Councillor Roger Belson, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “Oxfordshire people are ahead in their thinking about these kinds of issues. The debate about packaging has been going on for some time in the county. It is pure common sense. Less packaging means less wasted resources and less waste to dispose of. There is no counter argument. It is about time we started to see some national direction on this issue with organisations compelled to do something about it.”

If you want to report a case of a ridiculously over packaged item, contact Trading Standards on (0845) 0510845.
