  • Business opportunities from 2012 Olympics

LOCAL Businesses Must ‘go for Gold’according to Sue Cooper, Thame’s Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate.
Sue is encouraging all local businesses to boost their business by logging onto the London 2012 website.
Sue said:”Although over 500 contracts have already been signed by the Olympic Delivery Authority, the majority of contracts have yet to be awarded. South Oxfordshire’s businesses must make sure they get their fair share of these contracts”.

Businesses are now able to register on the 2012 website so that they can be made aware of opportunities for contracts.
Sue has also put a question on South Oxfordshire District Council’s agenda for the next meeting on February 21, asking what is being done by the Tory controlled Council in this area to take advantage of the opportunities being generated by the 2012 Olympics.

  • Thame trees to be felled following complaints

A row of beech trees on the boundary between gardens and the Queen Elizabeth Circle in Thame, are to be felled, following complaints from residents about loss of light, leaf fall into gardens and root damage to buildings along the boundary line.
After rejecting a plan to have the existing trees pollarded, on the grounds that it would only be a tempory solution and an on-going expense, Thame Town Council’s Culture and Leisure commitee voted to remove the existing trees and plant new trees 30 feet into the recreation area.
It is expected that the work would be phased in over three years.

  • Ancient Saxon settlement discovered on Thame development site

THE discovery of an ancient, Saxon settlement on the site where a new football stadium is proposed, has excited Thame historians.
The identification of the historic site on the far side of the town’s Eastern by-pass, means that a team of archaeologists will move in to dig very carefully around the area before building work can begin on Town United’s proposed new football stadium.

The plan, submitted by the Thame Football Partnership, will be considered by the district council’s Planning committee early in April.

  • Chinnor firsts uncowed by military maullers (Amended last paragraph re: earlier kick off time for next match)

    Reading 32 pts Chinnor 32 pts !!
ITS one thing turning up to find your opponents fielding nine current British Army players, six of whom are Fijians; its another for the home side to also arrange the weather for their imports! Blue skies and temperatures more akin to June meant ideal conditions for Chinnor’s away match with Reading on Saturday (Feb 09).

Chinnor were comfortably in front during the first quarter of the first half and in the opening salvo’s of the second, but on both occasions they allowed Reading back into the game. Although Reading took the lead as early as the third minute when powerful No.8, Ledau Jope, picked up from the base of the scrum and scored wide out, Chinnor were soon back in the hunt some seven minutes later.

A sharp threequarter move saw the ball reach Phil Huxford who turned on the gas to round his opposite number to score in the corner. A fine conversion by James Cathcart who also slotted a penalty, put Chinnor in the ascendancy. They then scored a superb try when Ben Hewitt carved an opening on Chinnor’s right, handed onto the ever supportive Grizz McQuire before the ball eventually found Darren Oxley to finish the move in the left hand corner.

This gave Chinnor a 12 point cushion which was almost instantly reduced when Karneli Vuadreu intercepted a pass in the middle of the park to go over unapposed. That he caught the ball behind him in making the interception leading to a suspicion that he might have been off-side. However Chinnor’s lead was reduced by 7 points. A trademark Pip Seymour try was next on the agenda when Chinnor moved the ball across the field allowing Seymour to chip ahead and win the chase for the touchdown. A fine conversion from wide out put Chinnor ahead 22 points to 12 at the half way mark.

With Cathcart kicking a penalty just after the interval, it appeared that Chinnor were in control. However, a piece of loose defence, when indeed Chinnor were on the attack, allowed centre Peceli Nacarnavuto in for the first of his three tries. A penalty from Alex Wallace made further inroads into the Chinnor lead and when Nacarnavuto went over for his second try and Wallace added the extras, Reading were in front. Chinnor came back, created space on the right and Jaike Carter scored. Another conversion from the touchline put Chinnor once more in the lead but a try by Nacarnavuto levelled the scores.

Try as they might in the closing stages, Chinnor could not get the score which would have clinched this hard fought game.

Chinnor worked hard for their tries but unfortunately gifted Reading a couple of scores, although one of these was highly debatable.

Let’s hope both the fine weather conditions of last Saturday and the players prevail for the Bracknell visit to Reading.

Chinnor First welcome Old Patesians next Saturday (16/02)- kick off 1.30pm, as the club captain is getting married.

  • Time to spare to meet someone new and help them?

WOULD you be interested in helping out someone caring for a relative in their own home?
South & Vale Carers Centre, based at Didcot are starting a new project and are looking for volunteers. You would be introduced to a household where the carer and the cared-for person are living, and asked to stay in the home while the carer took some time off: perhaps an hour a month, perhaps an afternoon a week.

This would all start off with an interview for you, and references sought, and then a short training course to equip you for any situation and send you, free from anxiety, into your future as a volunteer!

We will take care in matching volunteers and cared-for people, and you would have constant support by phone when you need it as well as ongoing face-to-face meetings with colleagues and with Chris Elliott, the co-ordinator of the scheme.

Chris is waiting to hear from anyone interested and has much more information to give. Please email her at the Carers Centre on chris@svcarers.org.uk, or phone her there on 01235 510212. She will be delighted you?ve called!
