CPRE demands re-think on Green Belt expansion plans
CPRE, Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, has said that it is time for a re-think on plans for Oxford?s housing expansion in Green Belt, following Oxford City Council’s announcement to delays its Core Strategy.
The government has said it will not contest judicial challenges over its failure to carry out assessments of reasonable alternatives to the Green Belt reviews for areas south of Oxford and north-east of Guildford.
Following the successful legal challenge to the South East Plan by CPRE Oxfordshire, South Oxfordshire District Council and the University of Oxford, plus two other groups, over the proposed expansion into the Green Belt at Grenoble Road, Oxford City Council have now announced that their Core Strategy will be put on hold.
The City?s Core Strategy, setting out the City?s plans to 2026, had been the subject of an Examination in Public through the summer, finishing on 11th September, 2009.
CPRE have said that the Inspector had been aware of the legal challenge to the SE Plan?s recommended 4,000 house expansion into the Green Belt, but at that stage was not able to take account of it, despite the implications for other proposals in the Core Strategy.
“It is now clear,” says CPRE, “that the controversial policy for the expansion into the Green Belt south of the City will effectively be quashed, and the City in turn will not be able to proceed with its plans in the Core Strategy until the Secretary of State has decided in detail how the SE Plan must be amended.
“As the first Inspector is retiring, a second Inspector will have to take over and it is likely that the Examination in Public will have to be re-opened in the New Year in order that the issue can be properly considered and a final Inspector?s report issued on the City?s plans.”
CPRE has also stated that it understands that one of the key City proposals which is likely to be affected is the controversial Northern Gateway scheme, which promoted further employment growth and development on two parcels of Green Belt land.
“With the 4,000 house expansion now quashed, there is little basis for this scheme,” it said.
Ed. I would like to have given Oxford City’s side of story but no one was available to talk to me this afternoon from the Council, and the council’s website proved to be frustratingly non user-friendly on the subject. If they come back to me, ThameNews.Net will of course report the council’s views.

Angel or crook?
Dear Editor, It was quarter to eight in the evening and dark when the doorbell rang. I suppose we?re all on our guard these days when there is an unexpected caller at the door. I rushed from the phone where I had just finished dialling a number and opened the front door. A burly and rather sad young man in jerkin and jeans and with a large bag on his shoulders stood there.
“Thank you for smiling,” he began. There was an implication in that comment that he had faced enough rejection for one day. I sympathised privately but in a way, I fear, his comment was counterproductive. There, in my warm house and in my comfortable slippers I wondered, heaven help me, whether this was a clever bid for sympathy.
Anyway I had several things going on in my head at the same time and then the phone rang again ? presumably the puzzled recipient of the call I dropped when the doorbell rang.
The young man had an identity card on a tape around his neck. He clearly wanted to sell me something from his bag. This was just not the moment when I wanted to give him time. He offered to come back and I declined.
He might well have been genuine. He might, given the reports which occur on your site from time to time, have been some type of crook. He was also, as we all are, someone?s child and I have children. I sent him away. Rejection is a horrible thing to deal with. But even had it been the right moment, this time of evening would not have been a wise one for anyone to entertain a strange caller.
” . . .Be not forgetful of strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels
unawares.” (St Paul)
Oh dear.

Thame netball team returns to winning form
THAME Tornadoes returned to their winning form on Wednesday night, 04/11/09, beating the Psycho Physios 29 ? 9.
A motivated Tornadoes team were determined to take the win after losing their last two games. Thame started well and took the lead early with some great shooting. Excellent mid court play by Mel Wilkins, Rachel Wilkins and Lisa Sydenham meant Thame dominated the game and kept possession well. The goals kept coming for Tornadoes but Psycho Physios fought hard and defended well at times.
The Thame defenders made it difficult for Psycho Physios to score with some excellent intercepting and turnovers.
Despite missing several of their key players, Thame looked confident and strong and the whole team played well.
Player of the match was awarded to both GK Hannah White and GD Karen Fowler for some outstanding circle defending.
Team: Hannah White (captain), Karen Fowler, Lisa Sydenham, Mel Wilkins, Rachel Wilkins, Vanessa Hake, Katie Houghton and Carol Storey.

The tap of Thame talent keeps flowing after 20 years
THAME YOUTH Theatre’s birthday bash on Sunday (01/11/09), which brought together ex members who have since gone on to become famous in their field, and aspiring young members of today, was a testament to the group’s inspiring founders and Thame’s young people.
Professionals like Stand-up, guitarist-song writer, Rob Deering (Out to Lunch BBC Radio 2, 99 Things to Do Before You Die on Channel 5, and winner of a celebrity special The Weakest Link), Sassy Clyde (Oxbridge Fringe Stand up, actress, Pringles advert) and the currently on-the-rise, Boom Jennies (Edinburgh Fringe etc) were among the Thame Youth Theatre Vets who took the time out of their busy schedules to return to Thame to celebrate their theatrical beginnings and to play homage to Chris Walters, Sarah Hayes and the other founders.
Chris told ThameNews.Net: “Last Sunday was, in my own humble opinion at least, a total triumph. Not only did it give so many old friends and companions the chance to meet up again – so many told me how they suddenly felt the years rolling away, to be back in Lower School Hall once again – but the cabaret itself showed just how much talent has come from Thame, and that the tap seems to keep flowing, with the new crop of Youth Theatre mixing seemlessly with the old crew. What is more, we raised over
