  • Police appeal for information after Chinnor burglary (Status: Press release)

THAMES Valley Police is appealing for information after two burglaries in South Oxfordshire, including one in Chinnor.

Between 1.50pm and 3.50pm, overnight (9/11/09 to 10/11/09), a house in Crowell Hill, Chinnor was broken into. The thieves smashed a rear patio door and stole some jewellery.

At around the same time, a property in Cuddesdon Road, Horspath was burgled. The thieves got into the house through an insecure front door and stole a mobile phone and car keys.

The car, a Vauxhall Corsa, which was parked on the driveway, was also stolen and later found abandoned in Shotover.

PC Emma McGrath, investigating the incidents, said: “I don?t believe that these burglaries are linked but we are investigating every possibility and appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that most thieves are opportunist, so always ensure that windows and doors are secure when you aren?t in the room.

“I am also appealing to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity to contact the police.”

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact PC McGrath at Didcot police station via 0845 8 505 505, or if you don?t want to talk to the police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

  • Thame Mayor helps Rotary

THAME’S Mayor, Jeannette Matelot Green, joined local people at the Rotary Club of Thame’s Welcome Breakfast, held at the Spread Eagle Hotel, on Saturday (07/11/09).

The event was part of the “Join Rotary and Make a World of Difference” campaign by Rotary Clubs all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland inviting local communities to find out about the good things Rotary does for them and the international community, and to encourage more people to join.

Rotary’s “Join Rotary and Make a World of Difference” posters could be seen in many window shops in Thame and neighbouring villages in the lead up to the event.

The Rotary Welcome Breakfast included a talk by Peter Todd, Thame Rotary Club’s President, who explained what Rotary is and how the Thame club has supported local and international causes for the past 41 years, including Shelterboxes, a scheme run by Rotary which provides tents and safe drinking water and welfare items for victims of natural or man-made disasters anywhere in the world.

The scheme was launched in Thame earlier this year and received enthusiastic support from the people of Towersey who watched a short talk by Rotarian, Erroll Bateman, followed by a video about Shelterboxes, which was set up by Rotarians from Cornwall back in the year 2000.

Peter Todd said: “The number of people who wanted to know more about Rotary was above our expectations. With new people on board we will be in a better position to support this year’s local and international causes: Thomley Activity Centre and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Service, as well as Shelterboxes and others. All those who wish to find out more about our club and were not able to come last Saturday should contact us via our web-site: “a href=http://www.thame.rotaryweb.org”target=”_blank”>LINK
and we will be more than happy to welcome them at one of our Wednesday evening fellowship meetings.”

  • Thame school “Sends a Smile” to India

THE PUPILS of St Joseph?s Catholic Primary School in Thame have sent 161 smiles to children in India, through the Blue Peter ?Send a Smile? appeal.

The children enjoyed a variety of activities designed to raise their awareness of the kind of difficulties experienced by a child who is born with a cleft palate, where no medical help is provided.

Years six and two worked together to create their own T shirt designs finishing with a fashion parade, and Year five pupils created their own television ?Smile Appeal? programme which was broadcast during an assembly for parents.

Head teacher, Mrs Claire Kerr, said: “The work for the Appeal has given us all an opportunity to learn together about children in other countries whilst doing something to help them at the same time. I am very proud of our pupils and their families.”

  • What are your community space needs in Thame?

A THAME group is working with South Oxfordshire District Council to review community facilities available in the town.

In response to an offer from CMAG (Cattlemarket Action Group) to help SODC identify whether there is a need for more community facilities in Thame, Matt Prosser, SODC’s Strategic Director, said that the South Oxfordshire market town action plan for Thame had highlighted the council’s intention to carry out an audit of community facilities in Thame and that SODC’s economic development team would be undertaking this work in-house.

The council intends to contact all community groups using community space in Thame to establish whether their needs are currently being met and to contact the venue providers in order to assess whether there is any spare capacity within the town and if it could be used more effectively.

Helena Richards, spokesperson for CMAG, said: “We want to ask people to come forward with any examples of need for community space. We don’t want SODC to just look at what’s going on now, but the lost
POTENTIAL for events that don’t have a venue.”

Local people or groups who have a need for community space can contact CMAG at thamecmag@yahoo.co.uk

Matt Prosser told CMAG that SODC intends to send out a questionnaire to each organisation CMAG identifies in the town, and to carry out a survey electronically.

  • Could you do something amazing in 2010? (Contributed)

IT was a warm weekend in May. The weather was kind as 40 people started their challenge event and climbed into the minibuses. These were 40 people, some who had never met before, who were about to take on a very challenging task. Yes they were about to attempt to climb the three highest mountains in the UK.

That’s one in Wales, then one in England and finally one in Scotland. They only had 24 hours to complete this feat, but amazingly through hardwork, teamwork and determination they all JUST did it.

This was a team of people raising money for their favourite charity. So far this team alone have raised nearly
