  • 30/03/11…School librarian ‘keeps mum’ about her racy new novel

AN Oxfordshire school librarian?s first novel has just been published, but to spare the blushes of her mum, she wishes to remain anonymous beause of its ‘racy’ content.

Ex-IT Manager, mother and now School Librarian of a prominent local school, Bea Turvey, her pen name, lives in a small Oxfordshire village and has finally achieved her dream of writing a novel but because of the inclusion of some sex scenes she will not be able to enjoy the recognition that will come with its international publication!

Not only is she wary of being exposed to students? comments and staff critique, but her greatest fear is that the book will somehow make its way to her mother?s pile of must-reads! Therefore, she is writing under a pen name in the hope that it will keep her secret for as long as possible. The threat of exposure makes her anxious, she says.

“We all put our parents through hell as we grow up but this is beyond anything I?ve ever done before. My mother is extremely strait-laced: doesn?t drink, smoke, swear and is deeply religious. A book like this would shock her senseless,” says Bea Turvey.

Bea’s E book is called Banished and is a typical beach-read-romance with a hint of danger. An excerpt is available at: http://canwritewillwrite.com/Bea_Turvey.html

Banished came out on March 10, 2011, published by Can Write Will Write.

    THEFT FROM VEHICLES

  • 30/03/11 ….Thame’s MP goes back to school

THAME MP, John Howell, went back to school on Friday (25 March)to Lord Williams?s, Thame. The MP?s visit included a meeting with the head, David Wybron, to discuss a range of issues about how Government education policy was affecting the school.

John then held a question and answer session with sixth form students who asked a number of questions on topics which ranged widely from the budget and fuel prices to High Speed 2.

John said: ?It is always a pleasure to debate issues with the students at Lord William?s. The questions are spot-on and show both that they are fully aware of current affairs and that they care about the issues of the day.?

Following this, John was the guest at the formal weekly Year 10 assembly. Earlier in the year, Year 10 students had participated in a planning project to understand the issues around new housing in Thame.

The MP congratulated the students on the professionalism of their approach and explained how the planning system was changing and how the approach the students had taken was along the lines of the sort of community and neighbourhood planning that was going to be at the heart of the system in the future.

The visit was arranged by Nicky Stallwood, Personal Development Curriculum Manager at the school. Following the visit Nicky said: ?It was good to have John at the school and for the students to be able to ask questions face to face. It gave them the opportunity to link their work with real life decision making. It always helps when learning can be put into the wider context.?

John commented: ?The Year 10 students showed they cared about their town and their environment but they were also realistic about its needs for the future. They were particularly keen to ensure that environmental issues were addressed such as ensuring that there were green spaces as part of any development. I thought they had particularly good insights and it was clear they had enjoyed the project.?

John also told the students a bit about what it was like to be an MP. Using the example of the how the students passionately supported very different football teams he showed how it was impossible to represent everyone?s views and how an MP needed to listen but then come to his or her own judgement on key issues of the day ? and which football team was best!

  • 29/03/11….The power of the press?

Dear Editor, You were kind enough to use a short letter I sent to you on March 6 pointing out the neglected state of the traditional red telephone kiosk outside Thame Town Hall. Today I noticed that it has a bright, shiny new coat of red paint and the moss has gone from its roof. I think this may indicate the power of the press.

  • 29/03/11…..Chinnor U 14s Win Oxfordshire County Cup

WALLINGFORD 17 Vs Chinnor 28; Sunday, March 27, MATCH REPORT (Contributed by Jonathan Hook)

CHINNOR U14s won their first county cup on Sunday (26/03) after an intense and hard fought match. The final held at Wallingford, was a re-match from last year with both sides playing fast moving rugby on a firm pitch. Wallingford started stronger with plenty of running from their backs, matched by an impressive defensive effort from the Chinnor 15. Eventually the defence was stretched too far and Wallingford ran in an unconverted try. Ten minutes from half time, Chinnor responded with a try built from tight forward work with Iestyn James eventually driving over, 5 ? 7 half time.

The second half was very tight, eventually Wallingford broke the Chinnor defence with a big miss pass finding the winger in enough space to score, 10 ? 7. Chinnor responded swiftly with excellent support play as they continued to drive through their forwards. After several phases the balls was driven over the line by Charlie Krabbe and converted again by Jack Gibbins, 10 ? 14. Wallingford came back and continued to threaten with their dangerous backs, however, Chinnor?s defence was resolute and on a turnover ball from a ruck they started yet another drive towards the try line. Wallingford conceded a penalty, which was swiftly taken by Harry Lowe who put Thomas Strathdee in the corner, again converted by Gibbins, 10 ? 21. Five minutes to go and Wallingford started to move the ball around, again they ran out wide and managed to break the Chinnor line, 17 ? 21 and 3 minutes to play.

From the kick off Chinnor ran straight back passing in contact and with strong support running they forced their way into the Wallingford 22. With quickly recycled ball from a ruck five yards out, Iestyn James was able to dive over for a well deserved second try, which Gibbins once again converted giving him an amazing tally of four from four.

    Chinnor U14s squad
Jamie Strachan, Iestyn James, Reggie Hubbocks, Tom Bellars, Jack Gibbins, Kooks, Charlie Krabbe, Matthew Smith, Harry Stansfield, Harry Lowe, Callum Wright, Dan Denton, Thomas Strathdee (Capt), Nathaniel Heather, Tom Horgan, Chris Hopgood, Ben MacIntosh, Devun Williamson, Ben Marsh, Adam Pipkin, Rory Coltart.
