TALENT SHOW: Keith Milmer, the new webmaster of the Haddenham website writes: ?A talent show was held in the Youth and Community Centre, Woodways, on Saturday 1st September and what a ‘royal variety performance’ it proved to be! A capacity audience enjoyed a wonderful evening of entertainment [singing, poetry, amusing skits, mime, guitar and drums], provided by local homegrown talent of all ages. A truly delightful evening and lots of fun. Every one of the acts deserved a medal for the sheer entertainment value. However, in the spirit of a Talent Show, one winner was decided by audience voting and the winner was Lauren Timberlake (9), who sang an Adele number that had the whole audience captivated in admiration and delight. Encore! [You can see photos of the event at www.haddenham.net including one of Tom Chisholm presenting Lauren with her prize and trophy].

  • 13/09/12……..What’s it like to be autistic? Talk at the Barn Centre

DIAGNOSED with Autism in 2010, and with ‘Scotopic Sensitivity’ two years later, Paul Isaacs now speaks in public about the challenges he faces as a young, autistic man.

At this event, hosted by Michelle Diffey and Thame Safari, Paul will talk about his visual perception experiences and his learning difficulties and how it ‘feels’ to have them and how one can understand them. He currently speaks and trains for Autism Oxford. He is also an author and published his autobiography entitled ?Living Through The Haze? in 2012.

Pauls difficulties have been clinically recognised as follows:

    Prosopagnosia (Face blind)
    Simultagnosia (Object blind)
    Semantic agnosia (Meaning blind)
Visual – Verbal Agnosia (Comprehension blind)
    Dyslexia
    Dyscalculia

Yet this remarkable young man wants to promote autism awareness and help others on the autism spectrum, in the hope that they will not have to suffer as he has done, being labelled a ‘naughty’ child, struggling though mainstream school with no additional help or recognition of his autism.

Since he became a speaker for Autism Oxford, Paul continues to raise the profile of autism at every opportunity.

  • 12/09/12…..Day Centre looks to the future

THAME and District Day Centre?s grant funding from Oxfordshire County Council is safe for another 12 months, the Centre?s trustees learned at their September meeting.

The news was given by the Chairman, Tyrell Gillman, who was reporting on talks with council officials.

The Centre has met at Thame Community Hospital for the past 26 years and Mr Gillman, who recently succeeded Mrs Brenda Prosser as its Chair, outlined plans for its future growth.

Mrs Prosser was a founder member of the Centre and retired during the summer. Mr Gillman stressed that her legacy and that of the other founders had given a strong foundation for the future.

The hunt is on for a Clerk to the Trustees, who will take notes of the monthly proceedings of Thame and District trustees, and the Centre?s management committee. If anyone would like to volunteer, please ring Mr Gillman on 01844 214906

The Centre has charity status and all funds come from voluntary donations and contributions from local organisations ? apart from a modest grant from Oxfordshire County Council which pays the salary of two staff on three days a week. The Centre provides, above all, companionship, and then entertainment, a cooked lunch and refreshments for people in the area who may be elderly or frail or confined to their homes. It also provides respite for the carers of many who attend.

  • 10/09/12…..Catch up with your local CAG (Community Action Group)

COMMUNITY Action Groups is a network of local voluntary groups in Oxfordshire at the forefront of community led climate change action. CAGs organise events and initiatives to raise awareness and take action on climate change issues including waste reduction, promoting the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), carbon reduction, sustainable transport, and food, energy and water issues to live a more sustainable and less resource dependent life in their local community.

In Thame the role of the Community Action Group (CAG) is taken by 21st Century Thame’s Environment Group, which also carries out a number of other activities. The Group joined the Oxfordshire CAG network in December 2006.

Probably the most visible local event organised by the Thame CAG are the regular Swap Shops in Thame where local people can take unwanted possessions and other people can take them away. Occasional bike swaps have proved very popular too.

  • 29/08/12…Tackling neighbour disputes with ‘Friends across the Fence’

HOW do you deal with an anti-social neighbour? Call the council? Call the police? A new campaign is seeking to help residents in South Oxfordshire come to a peaceful resolution to their neighbourhood problems.

Friends Across the Fence has been set up by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils to offer advice and help to those who might be facing issues of low level anti-social behaviour from their neighbours.

    The advice from SODC is:

More often than not, the neighbour isn?t aware that their behaviour is a problem and will respond much better to a friendly and polite direct approach than they would a call from the council. This helps maintain healthy and friendly relationships within neighbourhoods.

This isn?t always possible of course and the Friends Across the Fence campaign also explains all the correct avenues to follow if a resident isn?t confident or comfortable with approaching their neighbour.

There’s a flowchart on both councils? websites that explains the best course of action for the main kinds of anti-social behaviour, including relevant contact details should they be required.

The campaign also aims to raise awareness of preventative steps residents can take themselves to help create a happy and harmonious community.

Cllr Bill Service, cabinet member for Community Safety at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: ?We are really keen for residents to find friendly resolutions to their problems, but where they can?t it?s important they know where to turn. Friends Across the Fence is designed to help with that.?

Cllr Bill Jones, portfolio holder for Community Safety at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: ?Quite often, running to the council can inflame a situation rather than help it. This campaign is designed to help residents identify the best way to resolve a problem, whether it?s to talk directly to their neighbour or whether it?s to seek outside assistance.?

Residents who feel they?re suffering anti-social behaviour should visit their council?s website at: www.southoxon.gov.uk/friendsacrossthefence or www.whitehorsedc.gov.uk/friendsacrossthefence

There are about 100 postcards on display and visitors may contact Robin if they would like to buy a copy of any particular out-of-copyright card. The exhibition will run for several months.
RUBBISH & RECYCLING: Next week?s rubbish will be collected a day later than usual (on Wednesday 29th) due to the Bank Holiday and the collection will be the last under the old system. The following week, garden bins will be emptied on their new fortnightly day – Monday – and rubbish and food waste bins will be emptied on the Thursday. The first mixed recycling collection (blue lidded bins) will be on Thursday, September 13.
