  • 05/10/12…..Poet & author to support marathon read to inspire children

CHILDREN?S writers will be joining forces with an Oxfordshire charity for a six-hour Readathon in a bid to encourage more children to enjoy books.

Performance poe,t John Foster, and children?s author, Shen Roddie, will both be taking part in the marathon event at Oxford Central Library, where volunteers will take turns reading aloud to entertain youngsters.

The event, which runs from 10am until 4pm on Saturday October 20, is being organised for the local charity, Assisted Reading for Children (ARCh), which recruits and trains volunteers who work one-to-one with children in primary schools across the county, inspiring them to develop a love of books and reading. It is being backed by Oxfordshire County Council, which is working to improve literacy throughout the area.

Oxfordshire County Council Chief Executive, Joanna Simons, and council leader, Ian Hudspeth, have signed up for 15 minute slots with their favourite children?s literature. Nicola Blackwood, MP for Oxford West & Abingdon, will also be taking part.

Event organiser, Vikki Evans, said: ?We hope the day will help us to raise funds for our vital work in schools, but more importantly, we hope it will encourage adults to read with their children at home.
Reading with children is so important. It increases their vocabulary, sparks their imagination, gives them valuable one-to-one time with grown-ups, and ? probably most importantly ? it is a springboard towards helping them read themselves.

?If the Readathon inspires just one adult to pick up a book and read it with a child, then it will have been worth it! ARCh supports any initiative which encourages children to gain a love of reading and we are pleased that our event is running while there is so much enthusiasm generated by the Oxfordshire Reading Campaign.?

Anyone who would like to support the Readathon or become an ARCh volunteer should contact the ARCh office by calling 01869 320380 or visit: www.archoxfordshire.org.uk

    MORE ABOUT ARCh

ARCh is based in Bicester and supports more than 200 volunteers across Oxfordshire. The charity?s work helps 700+ children in around 100 county primary schools.

Each volunteer completes the ARCh application, interview and checking process and a two day initial training course before being assigned to a school which they visit twice a week, for 90 minutes, sharing books with three children on a one-to-one basis.

The volunteer works with the same three children for an entire year allowing a strong mentoring relationship to build and to give each child sustained support.

  • 26/09/12…Lions Message in a Bottle is lifesaver

SOUTH Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is recommending that older persons and younger people living with a disability or long term health condition get their hands on the Lions’ ‘Message in a Bottle.’

The Lions ‘Message in a Bottle’ is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details including a list of the medication they are taking or a repeat prescription form in a common place at home where these can easily be found in a medical or other emergency. Your information is kept on a sheet of paper provided in a plastic bottle in the fridge and the bottle comes with two labels – one to be displayed on the inside of your front door or the main entrance to your home and the other on the door of your fridge. Why keep the bottle in the fridge? Because it’s the last thing that burns in the event of fire.

SCAS Clinical Mentor Karen Skillicorn-Aston said: “You don’t have to be old or infirm to be unwell. For your local ambulance service having access to a ‘Message in a Bottle’ in a patient’s fridge can be a real lifesaver. When a patient is in pain or distressed the last thing they need is to be quizzed about their life. Often we have to waste valuable time in rummaging around for a patient’s medication, time that could be much better spent in getting them definitive care at hospital.

“A Stroke can prevent a person speaking and result in a reduced level of consciousness. If any patient has a condition that we need to know about and is not in a position to tell us having a ‘Message in a Bottle’ in their fridge can make a real difference to the outcome for them.

“Whilst having a ‘Message in a Bottle’ is great, patients should remember to update this every time they are prescribed a new medication or are diagnosed with a further health complaint. It’s also the best place to keep a passport sized photo, details of any allergies, and a repeat prescription, ‘do not resuscitate’ form or living will.”

The Lions ‘Message in a Bottle’ is FREE from your local Lions Club. To order yours please email: miabcenorder@lions.org.uk or telephone 0845 833 9502 for details of your local Lions Club.

Brian Lazenby of Alton Lions Club commented:

“I would urge the relatives or neighbours of older persons and those living with a disability to contact us to ensure that those who may be vulnerable and at risk in their local community have a ‘Message in a Bottle in their fridge where the Ambulance, Police and Fire & Rescue services can quickly and easily find it in the event of an emergency.”

  • 14/09/12…..Problems with the new AVDC recycling system? Some solutions

A regular subscriber to ThameNews.Net, conscious of the the problems some house-holder in the Aylesbury Vale area have been having with the new waste collection service, and done some homework and come up with some useful suggestions.

The following notes are aimed to specifically cover the particular problems which are still arising with the new system, and some of which have been highlighted on television. The waste and recycling hotline ? 01296 585510 ? is still extremely busy and AVDC regrets that callers will need to be extremely patient; alternatively email: contractservices@aylesburyvaledc.co.uk

    MISSING BINS

If you do not have the bins you need you can report this by emailing AVDC on newbins@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk ? or on the hotline.

    BINS NOT EMPTIED

If your green bins (for food or general waste), or your blue-lid recycling bin are not emptied on their usual day (Thursday for Haddenham) you should leave them out and they will be emptied on the following day. Should your usual collection day be on a Friday, missed bins will be emptied after the week-end on the Monday.

If you are reporting an unemptied bin you can email AVDC from the link ‘Report it’ on their homepage and choosing ‘missed collection’. Alternatively you can ring the hotline. However, if you whole road has been missed it is extremely likely that your bins will be emptied on the next day in any event.

If your brown garden waste bin is not emptied you will need report it anyway and specifically arrange for it to be emptied on your next green bin day ? Thursday for Haddenham.

    WRONG SIZE BINS

If you need a second bin of any kind you should ask for one by telephoning the hotline.

While smaller blue-lid recycling bins may be obtained in due course, these are not available at present.

    UNWANTED NEW BINS

Arrangements have still to be finalised for collecting any unwanted new bins ? for example if you do not have any food-waste to put in that bin.

OLD BLACK BASKETS AND GREEN GLASS BOXES

The District Council much regret that you may not have seen their publicity about collection of your old recycling containers. The position on this is now, as noted in some of the initial information that you received, that you will need to take these to a household waste recycling site ? for example Rabans Lane or Bledlow ? if you do not wish to keep them.

PUBLIC RECYCLING BANKS IN HADDENHAM ? AND ELSEWHERE

If you need to, or if you prefer to use the public ‘bring banks’ in the village, rather than the kerbside doorstep collection for your recycling, these bring banks are to remain on site ? at Banks Park, the train station and Haddenham Garden Centre – until further notice.
