  • Tough First Match For Chinnor Seconds

Chinnor RFC – Match Report – By Walter McGuicken
Chinnor 2nd Team 10 Pts vs. Hertford 2nd 52 Pts
Date: 9th September, Home League Game
    Scorers:
    Tries: Martyn O,Mahony.
    Conversions: 1 Adam White
    Penalties: 1 Adam White

CHINNOR 2nd played their opening league game in the in the Canterbury Shield this Saturday and rapidly realised that it?s going to be a very tough league, probably about three leagues higher than they played last year.

Hertford 2nds proved to be a very well drilled, experienced team and straight from the kick off showed great support for their strong back line. With the benefit of a couple of bounces, Hertford found themselves in the lead and Chinnor worked hard to stay in touch with a penalty by Adam White and a try by Martyn O,Mahony in the corner converted by White.
The half finished 19 points to ten to Hertford.

Hertford looked the hungrier and more disciplined side and ten minutes into the second half scored their next try. The visitors were stringing together some well-worked moves and had Chinnor encamped in their own 22 metres for most of the second half. They were awarded a penalty try when Nick Grimsdell was deemed to have killed the ball and was sin binned for ten minutes. This was a little harsh because he was in his own goal area and had actually held up the ball to stop the try, so Chinnor was very unlucky.

Hertford scored two further tries while Chinnor were down to fourteen men for ten minutes. Hertford scored again in the 10th minute of injury time, and they certainly deserved to be the winners in a 52 points to 10 total.

At the end of the game the Chinnor boys looked very tired and out of sorts and will have to focus more with their effort and attitude in the future if they hope to emulate last year?s outstanding performance.

The man of the match goes to Charlie McBeth who put in a usual dogged performance and harried everything that moved.

  • Text Your Right To Vote

RESIDENTS in Southern Oxfordshire can now confirm their right to vote by text message in a new service being offered by South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils.
The councils, increasingly working together to save money by sharing agencies, are two of the first in the country to provide this service

Both councils are currently sending out their annual electoral registration forms and are urging residents to respond as quickly as possible. The new service means residents can now confirm their details in one of four ways by text, post, telephone or through the internet.

Ann Ducker, Leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, says:”Text messaging is becoming increasingly popular as a quick and easy method of communication and we?re delighted to be able to offer this service to our residents for confirming their right to vote. By getting this information back to us as quickly as possible we can keep the costs of the service to a minimum.”

Jerry Patterson, Leader of the Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “In the Vale we are committed to making public contact with us as easy as possible, so even something as important as confirming your voting details are correct can be as simple as texting your friends and family. I hope as many voters as possible will take advantage of this innovative approach.”

  • Radio DJ To Turn On Christmas Lights

LOCAL resident and DJ, Ken Bruce, has accepted an invitation to turn on Thame’s Christmas lights and launch a whole weekend of exciting festive activities.
Ken, who lives in Towersey, is a long-standing and popular radio presenter, currently hosting his own show on BBC’s Radio two.

Initial plans for the town’s Big Christmas event, being organised jointly by Thame Town Council, 21st Century Thame’s Economic Group and local church groups, are well under way and will include a Christmas shopping event on the Sunday (December 3) with street entertainment and the French market from Thame’s twin town, Montesson, who will be selling french galettes, wine and other local produce throughout the weekend.

The lights will be turned on this year on Friday evening, December 1, but the weekend’s celebrations will begin at lunch time with a special carol service for office workers. The emphasis this year is on involving the whole community so the very popular tea party for the elderly of the town will be repeated between 2-4pm in the town hall chamber.

The Crendon Morris Men and Haddenham Hoofers will be performing in the town centre over the weekend and it is hoped that the donkey-led nativity pageant that was so popular last year, will be repeated.

The final programme for what promises to be an event to attract both locals and visitors to the town, will be published once the Christmas Working Group has finalised its plans.
