  • Romanian Challenge For Lord Bills’ Students (Contributed)

FOLLOWING a year of planning and fundraising, three teams of Lord Williams?s Year 10 students finally made the journey to Romania recently, for a two week expedition.
In all, 29 students had an amazing opportunity to experience Romanian culture, contribute to an isolated village community, trek in the picturesque Caliman Mountains and enjoy the challenges of work as part of a team.
Working with leaders from World Challenge Expeditions and teachers Will Speke, Roz Poole and Daniel Cuell from school, the students took charge of their expedition and shared different roles each day, organising tasks, arranging transportation, balancing their budget and coping with the highs and lows of being away from home.

The expedition started with an early morning flight to Bucharest and then a sleepless overnight train journey north to Transylvania and into the Carpathian Mountains. There were three main phases to the teams? stay in Romania; we started with a trekking phase that took two teams in to Suhard Mountains and one team into the Caliman Mountains. Students covered over 50 km in five days, carrying all their own equipment and food in rucksacks through some challenging but inspiring terrain. Highlights included sharing a meal with a local shepherd who took pity on the group and whipped up a Romania palenta in record time! Despite struggling with blisters and looking out for snakes and bears, the three teams worked together to overcome a tough physical challenge, for which they were rewarded with a night in a hotel in the town of Vatra Dornei ? and a hot shower!

The second phase of the expedition involved spending a week living in a small village called Lunca Ilvei, a further hour?s train journey into the Transylvanian countryside towards the Ukraine. In the village each team spent five days constructing a piece of playground equipment for one of the four local primary schools. Each team designed a different construction and organised some materials that had to be purchased in Thame and taken with us to Romania. The logistics of building a timber construction without speaking any Romanian was a great challenge, and with the help of local children whose English was very good, we managed to borrow local tools and purchase enough timber, rope and other resources that made the projects possible. This stage of the expedition gave students a real chance to mix with local people and gain an insight into their daily lives.

The third and final phase of the expedition was ?rest & relaxation? where all three teams spent a day white-water rafting and had the chance to see local sights, including some monasteries. This was also a chance for the teams to unwind and enjoy the final days of each other?s company before the train journey back to Bucharest and the flight home to the UK.

Overall the students not only had an insight into a very different and rapidly-changing culture, but faced the challenge of working as a team and taking leadership responsibility for themselves.
All three teams will be organising feedback evenings in September where they can tell parents and supporters more about the expedition and share some of the many photos that were taken to record the experience.

All students would like to thank the parents, relatives, friends and supporters who helped us make this expedition possible, including financial donations from local companies.

  • UPVC Door Warning After Thame Burglaries

RESIDENTS in the Thame area are being urged to double lock UPVC doors using a key, after a spate of burglaries in the area.
UPVC doors can be locked from the inside by lifting up the handle, but offenders have been reaching in through letter boxes and pulling the handle down to get into houses to commit burglaries.

Overnight from September 21-22, four burglaries occurred in Thame; two in Montrose Way, one in Onslow Drive, where a car was stolen, and one in Stuart Way. In each burglary offenders reached something through the letterbox to release the door.

Crime reduction adviser, Lesley Nesbit, said: ?We believe thieves are deliberately targeting houses with these doors in the hope they will not be properly locked.
?It is vital that anyone with a UPVC door locks it with a key and removes the key well away from the door and out of sight. Lifting the inside handle up is not enough to secure your property.
?Also, ensure any other doors and windows are locked and that keys are out of sight.
?If in doubt, contact your UPVC door installer or your local crime reduction advisor.?

Your local crime reduction officer is Lesley Nesbitt ?on 01844 264 945

If you have information or witnessed any of these burglaries please contact police via 0845 8 505 505. If you do not wish to speak to police or give your name you can call the Crimestppers Charity on 0800 555 111.

  • Notes From Town Council Committee

THAME Town Council’s Culture, Leisure and Recreation committee met recently and discussed, among other things, some of the town’s green spaces.
The following is a short summary:
    * Suitable locations for a bench in memory of Thame resident, Mr Martin Weeks, at the Southern Road Recreation area, are to be considered.
    * The Open Spaces Working group reported that Thame In Bloom will take the lead in entering Thame into next year’s Best Kept Village competition.
    * It also reported that three quotations have been sought for the replacement of play equipment in the Churchill Crescent play area, and ditto for the Southern Road Rec.
    * Consideration is to be given to an offer from SODC to supply free trees to Thame, and to an offer for Thame to participate in a Pilot for a Tree Warden scheme. (Suggestions to the Mayor)
    * To consider illuminating the town hall clock at some time in the future. (Point made that a higher priority might be to get it to keep time !),
    * That a large tree in the Churchill Play area had to be removed recently, at a cost of

  • Thame Cinema Is Back

THAME Cinema for All is back at the Players Theatre in Thame for another season offering the best in contemporary cinema and short films from local film makers.
The season kicks off on September 30th, with what the Guardian described as one of the great films of the decade. Hidden, starring Daniel Auteuil and the wonderful Juliette Binoche, was released in the UK earlier this year, and had the critics falling over each other in their efforts to praise it. It is a contemporary thriller about a couple being stalked by someone who sends them videotapes of themselves. This person has clearly, on the evidence of his video footage, intimate access to their domestic sphere, yet they do not know who he is, or how he and his camera have infiltrated their lives. A compelling essay in psychology and politics, it builds to a knife edge of suspense.

The following week, on the 7th of October, the film will be Capote, featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman?s Oscar winning performance as the iconic American author Truman Capote. This fascinating film explores the writing of In Cold Blood, his story of the brutal murder of a mid-Western family. The book was to become his masterpiece, but was also his undoing.

The 21st of October will feature Paradise Now, a film that tells the story of two young Palestinians who are recruited to be suicide bombers. It doesn?t portray them as monsters, nor does it excuse their actions, but tells a very moving story that is terribly relevant.

All films begin at 8pm, doors open 7.30. Tickets

  • Survey Of Pupil Travel To Reduce Car Journeys

A HUGE survey is to be carried out to gauge school travel habits and encourage less car journeys.
Schools across Oxfordshire are to take part in the survey to find out how their pupils travel to school ?and hopefully encourage them to join the growing numbers who are walking or cycling.

Oxfordshire County Council?s Travel Plans Development Team is conducting its annual survey of journeys to school during September. Last year, more than 100 schools and 22,000 pupils took part.

The team sets up School Travel Plans with schools and they are proven to increase the number of pupils walking and cycling to school, and to reduce car usage and traffic congestion.

In Oxfordshire, School Travel Plans have changed about one in five car journeys to school in to walking, cycling or bus journeys

The Big Oxfordshire School Travel Survey will run from Monday, September 18 until Friday, September 29.

All mainstream schools, maintained or independent, are encouraged to take part and will receive a survey pack to help them join in. Taking part is an essential first step in developing a School Travel Plan.

Cllr David Robertson, Oxfordshire County Council?s cabinet member for transport, said: ?We?ve all recently experienced the difference to congestion levels that the return of pupils from school holidays makes to our roads.
?School Travel Plans work ? we now need to spread them even further than we already have. By taking part in this survey I hope that the imagination of other schools will be captured and that they will join the 134 schools in the county already signed up to these plans.?
