  • The Future Of Housing Development In Thame

THAME residents were given the opportunity to have their say about where future housing development in the town should take place, at an exhibition on Tuesday in the council chamber.
South Oxfordshire District Council is currently preparing a Site Allocation Plan to meet the target of 700 new homes in the district by 2016, and an additional 1,250 by 2026.
As part of a consultation excercise, the exhibition, and others like it elsewhere in south oxfordshire, suggested various options that visitors to the exhibition could add red stickers to their preference.

Some of the homes could be built, it was suggested, as infil to existing sites, filling in gaps or by change of use of existing buildings, but for the remainder houses required, the main options given were:

    Development option 1a
    Growth of Henley,Thame and Wallingford
“All new development would be located in or adjoining Henley,Thame and Wallingford which have a wide variety of shops, employment opportunities, education and health provision, community facilities, and good public transport provision. The amount of development in each place will depend on suitable sites being available.”

    Development option 1b
Growth of Henley,Thame and Wallingford with some modest growth of the larger villages.
“The larger villages include Benson, Berinsfield, Chalgrove, Chinnor, Cholsey, Crowmarsh Gifford, Goring, Horspath, Sonning Common, Watlington, Wheatley and Woodcote. The amount of development in each place will depend on suitable sites being available.
New development would be spread more widely across the district and would include the provision for growth of larger villages as well as the towns. This may help meet the needs of rural communities by providing some affordable housing in villages as
well as towns, and by helping support local shops and services.”

Anyone who was unable to get to the exhibitiion, can take part in the consultation interactively, by visiting the district council’s website. See Link

  • Young Thame Musician On Track For Music Award

ONE OF Thame’s most talented young musicians has reached the semi-finals in this year’s BBC Young Folk Awards.
15 year-old Wilber Sears, a pupil at Lord Williams’s school in Thame, has reached the top 12 in the competition and will take part in the semi-finals to find the top six on December 1, in Blackpool.
Wilber, who lives in Wellington Street, plays music in many other genres apart from Folk, including Rock and Jazz. His current band, The Shorehead flyover, he describes as: “Psychadelic punk rock with a hint of Blues.”

For the competition, Wilber played his own guitar composition, ‘Nobody’s Grave’, and the Stephan Grossman’s ‘Vestapol’.

Wilber told ThameNews.Net that getting as far as he has in the Young Folk Awards has really boosted his confidence for the next round, although, as one of the youngest competitors in the competition, he has no idea what the competition will be like.
His big hero and influence is the legendary guitarist, John Rembourn – one of the great guitarists, including Django Rheinhard, whose music was introduced to Wilber by his dad.

If he gets to the final, Wilber, who also plays banjo, will be invited to play at all the big, national folk festivals next year, including Towersey.
The eventual winner will receive a mini Grammy award and get to play live on the Mike Harding Folk programme on BBC Radio Two.

You can listen to Wilber play by visiting his My Space on: http://www.myspace.com/wilbermusic

  • What Do YOU Want To See On The Cattle Market Site?

NOW is an exciting time for Thame and district. A developer has submitted an application to South Oxfordshire District Council to relocate the Cattle Market from the North Street site.
Did you know that the North Street Cattle Market site is owned by South Oxfordshire District Council(SODC)?

NOW is the time for us to tell SODC what Thame needs and how we want the space used. If we don?t it will be decided for us.

The Council?s local plan for Thame stated that we do NOT need another supermarket???But there are things we DO need that could be purpose built on the cattle market site Such as:

? A purpose built library, that is near to parking, has good access for wheelchairs and pushchairs and space for computers and innovative activities.
? A community and arts centre where the groups in Thame could meet in the town in a comfortable and well equipped venue.
? A space that could be multipurpose but convertible into a 350-seat auditorium for amateur dramatics and music, and professional touring music and arts.
? A diverse and exciting place that would enhance Thame?s shopping centre.
    ? A meeting place with a caf

The advice from Lesley Nesbitt, Thame’s Crime Prevention Officer, is: “Please take care where you park your vehicle- use your garage or driveway if you have one.
“Fold your wing mirrors into the body of the car so that they are less of a target for damage.
“The theft of Satillite Navigation systems is on the increase and I would strongly advice people who have these items to remove them from their cars, remove the cradle that they sit in and use a duster to wipe away the suction mark from your car windscreen.

“Consider security marking your property with an ultra violet marker pen and record all the serial numbers of property that you keep in your car; this helps to identify your property if it is stolen or lost and if it comes into police possession we can get it back to you.

“Car mirror hangers stating that your vehicle is secure and you have no valuables in them are available from Thame police Station. The front office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday.”

  • ‘Awsome’ Chinnor Seconds (Contributed)

Chinnor 2nds, 50 Pts vs. Westcombe Park 2nds, 13 Pts October 7 – Away League Game.
SCORERS: Tries – Andy Millburn x 2, Joe Iosefo, Phil Scott-Priesley, Martyn O,Mahony, Ed Orchard, Nick Grimsdell, Leon Westerman. Conversions – Gareth Duder x 5.
    MATCH REPORT
What a great game played by two good sides, but this time the Chinnor 2nds reached new heights with everything just going right for them on the day. The forwards were awesome and they gelled superbly with the back-line, who were also in top form.
Chinnor came out of the blocks from the start unlike last week where it took them 20 minutes to settle in.
Joe Iosefo put points on for Chinnor within five minutes, after good control by the forwards. Within minutes however, Westcombe Park came back to even the score.
Five minutes later it was the turn of the backs and Ed Orchard scored, followed by a convertion by Gareth Duder. But Westcombe Park came back again in the 25th minute and the score was 12-10 to Chinnor.

Chinnor then stepped up a gear with Andy Millburn turning the ball over on the halfway line by putting Chinnor into an attacking position and allowing for Phil Scot-Priestley to score – again converted by Duder. Another good break, this time by Ian Stock, gave Nick Grimsdell the opportunity on the wing to score, and again Duder converted. The first half ended 26 points to 10 in Chinnor?s favour.

The second half went all Chinnor?s way and Westcombe Park found whatever they tried was just to no avail. Chinnor continued to score at regular intervals with tries by Martyn O?Mahony and Leon Westerman, and two by standin Captain, Andy Millburn, with Duder converting two of the tries.
Westcombe Park added to its tally with a well-taken drop goal when every thing else seemed to have failed for them.
The game finished with Chinnor winning 50 points to 13.
All 19 players featured had great games but there were outstanding performances by O?Mahony, Beets, Iosefo and Weeks-Pearson, but man of the match goes to Stocky for his all-round game and change in position.

    Walter McGuicken
    Second Team Manager

Ed. Chinnor 1st XV were not so lucky on Saturday – they lost 8 pts to 85, against Westcombe Park 1st XV in their National League 3 South match on Saturday (07/10). Report to follow.
