  • Invitation To Join The Twinning Set!

THE people of Thame and surrounding area are being invited to a social event to find out what their Twinning Association gets up to and how they can get involved in a thriving, fun and interesting movement.
Thame is twinned with Montesson, a town of similar size to our own, located just outside Paris, and have exchanged visits both ways for almost five years. The Thame and District Twinning Association is holding a French Wine and Cheese evening on May 10, at Thame town hall, when members will show photographs of previous exploits (including a cycle ride from Thame to Montesson), share experiences and impressions and talk about future projects.
The event will be followed by a short AGM. Everyone is welcome.

Members of the Montesson Choral and friends will be spending the weekend in Thame, May 25 – 27, which will include a joint concert in St Mary’s church, Thame, between Thame Choral Society and their French counterparts.

The Association would particularly like to hear from anyone who would be willing to accommodate friendly french choristers over the weekend – a great way to quickly form friendships and have fun too. A programme of visits and activities is planned to help entertain guests who will mostly need a bed and breakfast and an evening meal on Friday and Saturday.

So, dust off the French phrase book (although most of the Montessonaise speak a lot of English) and get involved in this great organisation which is committed to: “……the promotion of exchanges of all kinds, the development of lasting friendships, respect and understanding, in furtherance of the true spirit of European unity.” (Extract from the Thame and Montesson Twinning Charter)

  • Councillors Unhappy About Shop Signs

THAME Town Council’s Planning committee is unhappy about the brightly coloured signage of a town centre store.
Comments by Cllr David Dodds, that the existing fascia signage above the Co-op store is “appalling,” came as the committee was discussing whether or not to recommend approval of a plan to erect 12 external lighting units over the signage.
Cllr Dodds said: “These signs themselves should never have been approved in the first place. They are contrary to Dictrict Council Planning policy, and quite unsuitable in a Conservation Area. If this was a Planning officer’s interpretation of the policy, then it was wrong.”
The committee agreed to recommend refusal of the plan for the lighting.

  • Rycote Developer Acccused Of ‘Planning On The Hoof’

A THAME Town Councillor is unhappy about aspects of the Rycotewood housing development.
Whilst recommending approval of an amendment to planning consent, to create a pedestrian access through a boundary wall, Cllr David Dodds has criticised the developer, Berkeley Homes.
At a meeting of the town council’s Planning Committee recently, Cllr Dodds said:”We asked for a children’s play area to be included as part of the original planning permission but so far, we have never seen a definitive plan for the site.
“It seems to me that this whole thing has been ‘planning on the hoof’.”
The committee agreed to ask to be sent full plans by the Developer.

  • Exciting New Businesses For Thame

LIKE any thriving town, Thame’s High Street enviroment continues to evolve.
The Music House, formerly in the Lower High Street, is currently undergoing a refit and will reopen as a Natural Cafe, selling natural and organic food and drink, with a useful children’s area.
What was previously Pickles, in the Upper High Street, is also opening shortly as the Ramsey Chocolaterie, selling coffee and hand made chocolate products made on the premises.
What was Local Tastes in the Buttermarket, Thame, has been acquired by an independent fashion shoe retailer and after many years in Thame, Don Butler’s shop in the Cornmarket is to close and will be taken over by a French kitchen designer.
Don will however, be continuing with the re-upholstery side of his business.

  • New Thame Loos To Include Classical Music ?

THE public conveniences in North Street, Thame, are to be demolished and replaced with a high spec block, easier to maintain and with the possibility of taped classical music which apparently, deters youngsters from loitering.
The bad state of Thames toilets was particularly highlighted in a recent report by the District Council who have now made money available for their improvement. Responsibility for the maintenance of the new block will probably transfer to Thame Town Council from the district council who currently have that obligation.
The new toilets will include a unisex baby changing area, automatic air freshening and water-saving autoflush.
Energy saving features like solar heating and grey-water re-cycling were rejected for technical and cost reasons.

  • Thame United Matches Rescheduled + Latest Match Report

THE game against Fairford Town, scheduled for next Monday 23rd, has been moved to Tuesday, April 24. The final game of the season against Slimbridge, originally set for May Bank Holiday Monday, will now be played on Saturday, April 28.
    MATCH REPORT – 18/04/07 – League Match
Shortwood United 3, Thame United 2

Thame lost 3-2 on Wednesday evening (18/04) at 9th placed Shortwood United.
The visitors got off to a dreadful start when, after three minutes, the referee awarded Shortwood a penalty after a Thame player was judged to have handled in the box. The spot kick was converted and Thame were 1-0 down. Thame fought back and for a long period it was one way traffic as they pressurised the Shortwood goal. Matt Higgs got the equalizer in the 24th minute when he turned the ball into the net during a goalmouth scramble. Six minutes later Higgs netted again with a well taken header. The teams went in for half time with Thame deservedly leading 1-2

The second half was far more even and Shortwood got the equalizer in the 66th minute. A draw looked certain, but the home side had different ideas and netted with two minutes to play.

Thame United: Michael Higgs, Ansell, Steadman, Matt Higgs, Boult, Hocking, Watkins (Rickets), Graves, Green, Connelly, Smith.
