  • Police close down Bank Holiday rave in Thame

THAMES Valley Police prevented and closed down some ten reported unlicensed parties this bank holiday weekend, May 23,24,25, 2009, including one on the Thame Showground.

Anticipating the bank holiday weekend to be popular with those organising and attending unlicensed parties, or ‘raves’, the police carried out Operation Robust. Officers patrolled, what they called, ‘areas of vulnerability’ targeting known sites and by intervening early, stopped the raves before they could get underway.

Inspector Steven Capper of HQ Operations department said: “Thanks to the efforts of our officers, our communities did not suffer the disruption, noise and damage historically associated with Bank Holiday weekends. Those intent on continuing to hold illegal parties need to be aware that Thames Valley Police will continue to implement these tactics, in closing down unlicensed parties and seizing sound equipment whenever the opportunity arises.
“We ask for the help of the community by reporting any unlicensed events or unusual activity, such as large convoys of cars, as early as possible, as this will assist us to respond in the critical early phases.
“I would urge anyone with any information concerning unlicensed parties over the forthcoming weekends and months to contact us via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.”

  • The Anniversary at Thame Players Theatre (Contributed)

THE ANNIVERSARY by Bill MacIlwraith, will be performed at The Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame, at 7.45pm on Friday, May 22, 2009.

Bournemouth based professional theatre company, Creative Cow, return to perform Bill MacIlwraith?s best known play, The Anniversary, at the theatre on Friday 22nd May at 7.45pm. Their visit is one of the last performances of their 29 performance tour which has taken them from Exmouth to Nottingham in eight weeks.

Many will remember their last very successful visit 18 months ago when they performed Peter Shaffer?s two, one act plays, The Private Ear, the Public Eye.

The Anniversary tells the story of a mother who keeps a tight hold on all three of her sons with gifts, threats and ruthless exploitation of their weaknesses. But as the family is unwillingly brought together to celebrate ?Mum?s? wedding anniversary (regardless of deceased Dad), revolt is in the air. One son gathers the courage to tell Mum he is moving to Canada and another breaks the news of an impending marriage. Mum finds her long ascendancy is broken at last.

The play is best remembered for the film version which starred Bette Davis and Sheila Hancock. Playwright Bill MacIlwraith said of the play: “… dear old Mum is a woman whose possessiveness is a killer, yet like the devil, she has an undeniable charm. She would never have been drowned as a witch, she would have been crowned Queen.”

  • Police officer in Thame murder case commended

A police officer based in Thame was one of four commended for their commitment and professionalism during the investigation into the murder of an elderly woman, whose body was dumped and burnt near Thame.

Their investigation into the murder of 93 year-old Thea Zaudy in July 2007, led to the successful prosecution of Adrian Lis and Jolanta Kalinowska, who both received life sentences.

Mrs Zoudy was murdered by Kalinowska, who was her cleaner at the time, and who then crammed Mrs Zoudy’s body into a suitcase with the help of her son, Adrian Lis. With the unwitting help of a friend, they then drove out to farmland just outside Thame, and Adrian Lis set fire to the suit case. It was later found by two farm workers.

Asst. Det Insp Anthony Collingwood, from Thame, along with Det Con William Downey, Det Con Alan Hillsdon and Det Con Paul Mackie, will receive their commendations at a special ceremony at Drayton Park Golf Club, on Tuesday, May 26,(2009).
