  • Where’s the atonement? Asks ex Towersey resident

Dear Editor, I write in response to a previous letter headlined ‘Plea for help and support for sex offender’ and published on Thamenews.net.

The letter, submitted by friends of the family of the convicted paedophile Nick Graves claims that the statement made by the relatives of the victim
was a ‘vindictive attack’. On reading the letter, it becomes clear that this is because the authors are concerned that information about a paedophile living in the ‘close knit community’ of Towersey would be
    embarrassing.

Demonstrating much more imagination than Judge Julian Hall, who decided that it was appropriate to release Graves on the basis that he had been punished
enough already by losing his well paid job and a few -(although clearly not all) friends, they manage to interpret the statement as an attack on Graves’ family. This is patently not the case.

The statement does not single out the Graves family but urges all parents, carers and families to
be vigilant, to listen to children and to report suspected abuse. This is sensible and balanced advice.

There are two foolish and particularly ignorant statements that should not go without comment. In both the friends of Graves seem to claim expert
knowledge in child psychology. Firstly, the damage done to the victim will apparently ‘probably be minimal’. How do they know this? Even Judge Hall
says ‘one can never tell long term’. Furthermore, surely seeing someone who has been found guilty of sexually abusing you walk free with glowing
references adds insult to the initial injury and must have an effect?

Secondly and perhaps even more alarmingly, they question the testimony of ‘mischievous’ children who claim abuse and that maybe we shouldn’t bother
listening to their accusations because they might be making it up. This is precisely the attitude that has protected paedophiles in the past and provides the kinds of environments in which they can operate freely.

It is admirable that they propose forgiveness. Forgiveness is however best accompanied by atonement. Graves has avoided the opportunity to atone by
rallying health professionals to produce mitigating evidence, friends to provide ‘glowing’ references, and admitting guilt only after being unanimously found guilty by a jury. These are not acts of atonement but calculated acts to avoid a custodial sentence. Ironically, it is only through a custodial sentence that he could receive the appropriate
    treatment for his disease.

    Yours sincerely,
    Simon Rycroft
(Former resident of Towersey) (SEE BELOW)

NOTE FROM EDITOR: Although it may not have been clear from my report, it was my understanding that Mr Graves WAS ordered to attend a Sexual Offenders’ Course, as part of the Sexual Offences Prevention order.

  • Police trap speeding motorists in Thame

IN a special operation in response to local concerns, police issued several fixed penalty notices for speeding in Thame recently.

The Thame neighbourhood policing team carried out the operation in response to local concerns to tackle road safety in the area last week.

The operation last Thursday, 16/07/09, took place on the Oxford Road in Thame just past Lord Williams Upper School, a perceived speeding hotspot. This operation targeted motorists who were speeding, using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts and was run by the neighbourhood policing team.

Eleven Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 10 for speeding and one for using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Neighbourhood Specialist Officer for Thame, PC Russell Hounslow, said: “I am disappointed at the relatively high level of speeding vehicles at this location especially as there is already a speed enforcement camera near this site.

“Speeding in a built up area is not only dangerous to the driver but also to other drivers and pedestrians. We will continue to respond to the needs of residents and will be carrying out more enforcement operations in the near future.”

For more information about your local neighbourhood team, visit, www.thamesvalley.police.uk or contact 0845 8 505 505.

  • Old friends link up in new Thame cycle shop venture (Contributed)

A NEW cycle shop opens in Thame on Saturday, July 25, a joint venture between two businessmen who worked together in the shop next door 15 years ago.

Tim Parsons and David Green are launching ?2Wheels? – a cycle repair, sales, servicing, accessories and clothing shop at 99b High Street, Thame. It will launch with a ?special guest opening? at 11am on Saturday 25th July. They?ll also host a display by Scott, a major name in the industry, and there?ll be champagne and nibbles to welcome the first shoppers.

Tim owns the car parts and accessories shop, Autoparts, next door and David and he worked there together for six years.

Tim says: ?We?ve often talked about opening a shop together. When the premises next to mine came onto the market it was too good a chance to miss. We used to do cycle accessories at Autoparts and with cycling becoming more and more popular, now seemed a great time to start a cycle sales, repair, accessories and clothing shop. While we?ve been getting ready for the launch we?ve had people in on a daily basis so it is looking positive already.?

David, who had a spell as an estate agent before returning to retail, says: ?With the price of fuel going up, people thinking about climate change and getting more health and exercise conscious, cycling seems to be a sector that?s steered clear of the worst of the credit crunch. We?ll combine cycle sales with repairs, have an exciting range of clothing and accessories for cyclists and we?ll be aiming to make visiting the shop an experience, starting with our opening.?

2Wheels is opening in one of four retail premises in Thame owned by Jennings, who run business parks at Chalgrove and Garsington. Paul Mabbutt of Jennings says: ?When the previous tenant moved out, we had a number of enquiries for this shop. All the others were from people who had existing premises in Thame and were looking to move. The most attractive option for us was to play a part in bringing a new business into the town, so we?re delighted to be working with Tim and David and wish them all the best with their new venture.?
