  • M40 anti noise action group proposals short listed

AFTER years of campaigning, members of the M40 Chilterns Environment Group’s (M40CEG) proposal to quieten stretches of the M40 had moved a step closer to becoming a reality.

After considering over 300 proposals submitted by councils on behalf of their local action groups, the Local Government Association (LGA) short-listed 172 schemes. From that short-list the Secretary of State will evaluate and select the proposals it wants to implement.

Working in partnership with Wycombe District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council, M40CEG proposed that the Highways Agency take action to permanently reduce road noise through re-surfacing, improving sound barriers and implement speed and night time restrictions between junctions three and eight.

The proposal, if agreed, could significantly improve the quality of life for the local residents along the stretch of the M40 at Loudwater, Wycombe and Lane End through to Wheatley in Oxfordshire.

As yet a timeline has not been confirmed by Government, but the LGA is pushing to discuss these proposals in the coming weeks and are hopeful that the process will be completed before the Easter recess.

The M40CEG group was formed in response to long standing concerns of residents that border this long stretch of motorway to the growing noise pollution.

Residents interested in supporting the proposal can write to the local MP asking them to support the proposal. Letter templates are available from the M40CEG website, www.m40-chilterns.org.uk.

  • Do your bit to ensure A & E is there for those who need it 29/01/10

AS A & E departments across the region have been battling with an unusually high level of demand this week, NHS Buckinghamshire is urging the public to ?Choose Well? to ensure that emergency treatment is available to those who need it most.

People with less serious conditions can do their bit to help relieve the strain on their local hospitals by visiting an Emergency Medical Centre, Minor Injuries Unit, their GP, the pharmacist, or self caring for their condition at home.

Buckinghamshire GP, Dr Geoff Payne says: ?Accident and Emergency Departments are there to treat people whose conditions are crtical or life threatening. Turning up at A&E with a minor ailment could mean a long wait while someone with a more serious condition gets the emergency treatment they need.

?By choosing the right service for their condition rather than going to hospital, the public can not only help to relieve the pressure on critical services, but may also find that they are seen by a qualified medical professional more quickly and conveniently.?

  • 28/01/10 World’s first town based iPhone App for Thame

THE world?s first dedicated town iPhone application is to be launched in Thame, Oxfordshire, in February.

Going live on the world?s most popular mobile smart phone application store, Apple, iThame is intended to provide useful information to visitors and residents whenever they want to access it, via their mobile phone.

iThame will be free to download and will offer information on the move that includes local amenities, heritage and historical walks, sports, accommodation, travel, news (RSS feeds), business, events in Thame, music and local information for young people.

Users will be able to provide feedback on services they want to see introduced in new versions, as well as receiving directions to points of interest in the town.

iThame has been put together by local businesses consultants, Andy McDonald and Simon Ralphs with the assistance of www.Thamenews.net editor, Sonja Francis. Thamenews.net has supplied a large part of the content including text, images and links to its own site and external sites of interest.

Andy told ThameNews.Net: “Our intention is to promote Thame as a vibrant place to visit and spend money.

“The App is funded by leading businesses in Thame, including Thame Service Station, Newitts Butchers, Racquets Fitness Centre, Brothers Hair Salon, the Thatch pub and restaurant and Kismet Jewellers, demonstrating how the town has embraced the new age of consumer demand for information on the move through an entrepreneurial spirit not seen anywhere else in the country.”

Commenting on iThame, the Mayor of Thame, Jeannette Matelot Green, said: ?This initiative is the first of its kind and I am proud to represent a town that has pulled together such a unique initiative. I am sure it will be followed by most other towns in the UK, and possibly worldwide, that want to increase spend within their communities.”

iThame will soon be introduced on the new Google Android platform which is predicted to rival the success of the iPhone. It is expected that many other businesses and services will be introduced on the iThame application once they see the widely expected interest and usage of the application.

iThame has been built using the unique mobile content management system from MDB Consulting who have a proven track record in delivering iPhone applications live on the app store.

The app will be live in two weeks and will also be available on the new Google phone operating on the Android store, widening the usage rates.

  • Thame Neighbourbourhood update from Police Community Support Officers (Contributed)

HERE is the latest Thame neighbourhood update from Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Diane Jackson C9610 and Lucy Thorne C8966.

    Crime Info:
During January 2010, there was a vehicle break-in in Towersey, near Thame where garden equipment was stolen including hedge trimmers, pulse saws and chain saws. We urge you to be vigilant and where possible, remove any valuables from your vehicle when it is left unattended.

During January, Thame has had a visit from ?Benson? the drug dog, who paid particular attention to licensed premises and public spaces to help crack down on the supply and use of illegal drugs. We work closely with the publicans in Thame through ?Pubwatch? and are kept informed of any areas of concern showing good working relationships with members of our community.

We have had two distraction burglaries in Thame earlier in the month, men knocking doors, stating they are from the water board. Please remember?”If in doubt, keep them out.” Don?t answer the door to people you don?t know, or who you are not expecting. Always try to look through a side window before opening the door.

If you have any concerns or witness suspicious activity in your area, please call us on 0845 8 505 505. Following this, we are working together as Community Officers, along with partner agencies to compile a list of vulnerable people in Thame. We will pay particular attention to these areas and offer re-assurance visits. We have also been carrying out high visibility patrols in areas where the burglaries have taken place, providing neighbours with Burglary packs.

    ASB (Anti-social behaviour) Info:
We have been fortunate enough not to issue any ASB Warnings/contracts throughout January. No Section 59?s or section 27?s have been issued and two alcohol seizures have been dealt with.

    Offenders brought to justice:
    Nothing to report.

    Comments on all priorities:
The 3 NAG priorities for Thame are:
    1. Insulting/intimidating people- These areas are patrolled when on duty and any ASB is dealt with and youths moved on if necessary, Where needed, home visits are carried out with parents present.
    2. Litter/ town centre- When on patrol in the town centre, the litter is monitored closely, working with the fast food outlets etc. and dealing with offenders when necessary.
    3. Speeding- Chinnor Road / High Street- Further SID (Speed Indicating Device) operations are planned for these 2 areas and any other roads identified by Thame residents.

    Partnership Activity:
We continue to carry out monthly site inspections with SOHA, South Vale Housing and A2 Dominion.
Country Watch meetings are being held quarterly. We have recently carried out a questionnaire with all Pubwatch members to allow us to take the scheme forward into 2010 with success. The meetings, which we attend, are now held every 2 months, rather than monthly with emergency meetings taking place when necessary.

We liaise closely with all 5 schools in Thame regularly. During January, we visited Lord Williams Lower School, where we participated in a Citizenship Day with Year 8 pupils. We enjoyed this and we were able to work closely with the youngsters. PCSO Lucy Thorne also visited St Josephs Primary School with the School Liaison Officer, PC Abi Derbyshire to introduce ourselves and talk with the students.
We have also worked closely with Age Concern and Social Services to support the elderly.

  • Virgin Vet leads Chinnor victory (Contributed)

    Andover III’s – 6 v Chinnor Oxen (Vets) XV – 45 pts. Game played Saturday, Janury, 23, 2010 – MATCH REPORT

DARREN Oxley?s first run out for the Oxen proved to be a memorable occasion as he scored two tries and set up three others as Chinnor Oxen beat Andover 45 ? 6.

From the kick off back row boys Brooks and Bridges linked with Oxley who dummied through the Andover defence to put young James Ward away to score an unconverted try in the corner after just 30 seconds.

The Andover pack responded well. They piled on the pressure and drove Chinnor back on several occasions resulting in Chinnor errors and two successfully converted penalties. This gave Andover a 6 ? 5 lead for much of the first half.

Chinnor?s tactics changed to keep the ball away from the Andover pack and run quick ball wide which enabled Darren Oxley to get a brace of tries converted by Conor Begley.

In the second half the Andover pack ran out of steam enabling Chinnor to dominate most aspects of the game with Kenny Lue rampant in the lineout and John Cann being very solid in the front row. The slick handing of the backs resulted in tries for Andy Healy, Conor Begley, Jerry Philpott and Bill Deeley with Begley converting three of the tries.

The Oxen?s man of the match, Oxley was cited for ?jug avoidance?.

The Vets will be playing top of the league Henley at home, in Thame, this Saturday the 30th at 2:15pm
