  • 15/02/10 Arrests in Thame Police operation

THE Police locally have reported several arrests as part of Operation Mickle during January and February 2010.

The aim of the operation is to reduce vehicle crime and burglary across the Thame sector. The operation has been led by the Thame Neighbourhood Team and has involved local officers, Roads Policing and the police Dog Section.

Thame’s Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) have supported the operation using mobile ANPR (Number Plate Recognition divice).

SGT Chris Hazell, based in Thame, said: “The aim has been to target offenders visiting the area to commit crime and there have been arrests and a number of stop checks during this period.

“We will be continuing with proactive targeted patrols and operations to catch and deter people committing crime in our sector.?

  • 15/02/10 Arrests as illegal ravers removed by police

POLICE officers recently broke up an illegal Rave in Nethercote Lane near Lewknor.

On Sunday, 07/02/2010, approximately 40 people were moved off the site by police and the landowner and during their removal two arrests were made for possession of controlled drug and driving under influence of alcohol.

Sgt Chris Hazell, based at Thame police station in Greyhound Walk, commented: “Thames Valley Police are committed to taking positive action in response to illegal music events. We would like to remind the community to contact the Police at the first sign of suspect activity. We would like to make potential organisers aware that Thames Valley Police will actively investigate such events and take positive action towards the prosecution of offenders and the seizure and loss of sound equipment, as with the Waterperry Rave last year.?

  • Proposed new Thame development could “breach boundary” 15/02/10

Dear Editor, If the layout printed in the Thame Gazette in its February 12 issue is correct, it seems the proposed ?East Thame? development would create a new suburb rather than bring about any integration of the east of the town with the centre.

It covers a larger area than originally described. From the aerial photograph printed in the newspaper, the development appears to cover areas A1, A2, B1 and B2 as laid down in the Oxfordshire core strategy, i.e. from Moor End Lane down to the Phoenix trail and incorporating the Show Ground site and the Rugby Club.

The by-pass was clearly envisaged, when planned, to be a natural boundary for the town. If it is breached, next stop could be Aylesbury. If I have misinterpreted the layouts I would be happy to be advised of that.

    Yours sincerely

  • Promotion setback for Thame United (Contributed) 15/02/10

Thame United 2, Didcot Reserves 2 – League game – 13/01/10; MATCH REPORT

THAME United?s quest for promotion suffered a setback on Saturday, at Wallingford, when they drew 2-2 with Didcot Town reserves, a team they really should have beaten.

Although United had the majority of ball possession, they were largely ineffective on front of the visitors’ goal and had to come back from behind twice to force a draw. With expectation raised after two excellent performances, this game will be viewed as two points lost rather than one point gained.

United controlled the opening exchanges but scoring chances were few. Perhaps the best chance of the half fell to Luke Rickets, after 20 minutes, but his 15-yard shot was wide. Thame keeper, Lee Orkney hardly touched the ball and it was 33 minutes before he made his first save. The visitors however grew in confidence and three minutes later, he was beaten by visiting striker Luke White from 12-yards. The home side came back in the final few minutes of the half, but seemed unable to play with the pace, creativity and width seen in recent performances. Pundits in the home crowd put this down to the fact that Thame?s goal scorer and maker, Aaron Rogers was playing in midfield, rather than up-front.

Thame came out fired up for the second half and besieged the visitor?s goal with the ball rarely crossing into United?s half. Their pressure was rewarded with an equaliser in the 60th minute. Ricketts took a free kick on the right which was met by Nick Rhodes at the far post with a strong header which the keeper got a hand to but could not prevent from crossing the line. Thame?s pressure continued with both Stuart Barr and Adam Rhodes going close, it seemed only a matter of time before their winner came. Against the run of play, however Didcot hit Thame with their second goal in the 72nd minute. They broke quickly on the right and the ball was crossed to the unmarked Harry Halls who finished well from 15-yards, giving Orkney no chance. Parity was restored with 8 minutes remaining when the ball was played from the left to Stuart Braun who finished clinically from close range. The final few minutes saw United continuing their onslaught against a packed defence, but the scores were even when the final whistle blew.

Thame United: Orkney, Newell (Jones), Meredith, Cowan, N. Rhodes (c), El-Kaissir, Barr, A. Rhodes, Braun, Rogers, Ricketts.

United are away to South Kilburn next Saturday 20th February. Their next home game is on Saturday 27th when Chalfont Wasps are the visitors.

  • Thame Boys topple top of League Prestwood

LEAGUE CUP 3rd Round – February 07, 2010 – Prestwood Colts 0 Vs Thame Boys 4; MATCH REPORT (Contributed)

THAME travelled to Prestwood, top of Division 4 by a long way, early on Sunday, in search of a good win to provide some confidence to set the team on a good run in the league.

With a full squad to pick from, Gerald had a team all desperate to prove themselves and all keen to get a game after a long lay-off.

Thame started very brightly and piled on the pressure from the start which is encouraging given the slow starts we have had in the past. We have too often been afraid of shooting at goal and the first 15 minutes saw several shots on target from Thame. However, the early pressure failed to pay off until later in the first half.

With Alex KFC and Stuart working well up front together, Alex had a shot saved from a keeper who was about to have a busy day at the office. Stuart got put through also but just couldn?t outpace a reasonable defence. Thame should have taken the lead when Alex intercepted a poor kick from the keeper and sliced his shot wide having done all the hard work. The danger with all this pressure was a break from the opposition as we moved more players forward.

Bradley was having a strong game and made some good runs down the right side while Matthew was yet again providing a solid defence whilst putting some good balls through to attack. Cameron meanwhile was having a good game at the back providing some pace in defence.

The goal finally came when a good cross came in from Brad, and Alex was there to volley a well taken goal which saw Thame in at half time 1-0 up. The team were advised to not panic when in possession and half time saw Alex Ingle, Louie and Duncan come on. Taylor stayed on and was having a good game in midfield. Austin was moved to left back, Lewis had a rest as did Brad and Ollie.

Aiden had a quiet day but was still alert at all times and came out really well to snuff out any potential Prestwood attacks. Louie got involved right from the off with some strong tackling and it was only a matter of time before Thame extended their lead.

Alex KFC was a constant threat to Prestwood’s defence and took a well taken second of the day on the break. Alex Ingle could have added a third but shot wide and several other chances went begging as Thame surged forward looking to bury the game. George was strong as ever in defence and Cameron seemed to be everywhere, mopping up any danger. Max came on for Stuart and Ross came on in left midfield for the final third of the game.

Max scored a well-taken third and Alex KFC got his reward for his hard work and tenacity by chipping over the keeper for his first hat-trick of the season and his best game by far.

The 4-0 score could have been 7 or 8 but Gerald felt the clean sheet was important and the team was praised for their efforts and a shot at a cup competition.

The gulf was quite big between the leagues but Thame will have confidence going in to their next League game and hopefully go on a winning run to finish high up the league.

Well done to Cameron who got man-of-the-match.

  • Elections begin in Oxfordshire for UK Youth Parliament 11/02/10

ELECTION voting has already started all over Oxfordshire as thousands of people flock to new electronic voting booths to mark the card of their chosen candidate.

Education, climate change and crime are all on the agenda for seventeen hopefuls who have been campaigning to take their place in the UK Youth Parliament.

A new electronic system is being used for the first time – secondary schools, colleges, Connexions Centres and Youth Centres in the county have online voting papers for students to make their decision this week.

Last year 11-18 year-olds cast 10,000 votes to choose three Members of the Youth Parliament and three deputies to join 600 MYPs nationwide.

The UK Youth Parliament elections are run by Oxfordshire County Council. This year there are 17 candidates vying for the posts, four in South Oxfordshire, three in North Oxfordshire and 10 in Oxford City. One MYP and one deputy will be chosen for each area.

Oxfordshire’s MYPs made history by being amongst the first non-MPs in 300 years to take to the green benches and debate at a unique gathering of young people in the House of Commons last year.

TENTH YEAR OF UK YOUTH PARLIAMENT

Now celebrating its tenth year, the MYPs continue to advise the government on youth issues and have claimed national and local success on subjects affecting them.

Current hot topics include abolishing university tuition fees and reducing the cost of bus travel for young people. During their one year in office, MYPs will hold events and influence decision-makers on issues that matter most to the young people in their area.

The successful candidates will be announced on Friday February 12, 2010, at County Hall in Oxford. They’ll have more than the political spot light on them as a film crew will be present recording the event for a documentary about democratic and decision making processes for young people to be shown all over Europe.

Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, Councillor Louise Chapman will be on hand to congratulate the new young politicians.

She said: ?We are really excited about the electronic elections this year. This method gives the wider population of Oxfordshire?s young people the chance to vote. The candidates have been working very hard on their campaigns and there is no indication of who is in the lead and will be elected, which makes the process exhilarating for them and us.?

To get involved in UKYP or attend the event contact Emily Little at emily.little@oxfordshire.gov.uk or call 07824475793.

  • 11/02/10 Thame computer business offers help for charities

THAME based computer company, Soundbyte, is holding a charity day on Friday, February 26, 2010, and is offering its expertise to local charities free of charge.

Simon Gray of Soundbyte, said: “Soundbyte Charity days give us the opportunity to help local charities solve computer problems free of charge. We dedicate two engineers on the day to provide their services free, one for onsite visits and one for workshop repairs. We make no charge to the charities concerned – all we ask is that the work is carried out locally (within 30 minutes of Thame) for onsite work or is brought to our Thame workshops.

“Charities wishing to take part need to contact us by phone (on 01844 216981) or by email: office@soundbyteresponse.com and book one of the available slots before 26th February. You should include your charity’s name and charity number when contacting us.”

There are three onsite slots available, each of 90 minutes duration. These can be used for any PC, Networking or Server issues. The time is yours to use as you wish, whether for resolving faults or simply discussing the use of your machine(s). Requests for these slots are dealt with on a first come first served basis and you can only book one slot on each charity day.

Simon added: “We are also providing three workshop bookings. Typical problems we can help with might be tuning a slow machine, software and hardware repairs or providing free installation of upgrades. All the labour we supply for these slots, both workshop and onsite, is free. If parts are required we will charge for these (with your approval) but fit them free.

“We believe this is a practical way of helping small charities within our local community and giving something back to the town and surrounding villages.
