  • Thame parking enforcement in limbo 12/03/10

SOUTH Oxfordshire District Council’s Chief Executive, David Buckle, has said that his council will not be taking over parking enforcement in Thame once the new Decriminalisation laws come into force next year, as the government wants it to do.

The government’s proposed fixed excess charges are more than those currently made by SODC, which, said Mr Buckle, would mean rate payers having to subsidise the operation.

The government has apparently stated that it is disappointed in the uptake by local authorities to take over parking enforcement, and wants to hear from them about why. SODC will be writing to the government with its views, assured Mr Buckle. He was speaking at a meeting of Thame Town Council on Tuesday, March 9.

Cllr Nigel Champken Woods said: “This is very worrying, particularly as our traffic warden, Peggy Long, will be retiring in September.

“At the moment, the police don’t want to know, SODC, don’t want to know, Oxfordshire District Council doesn’t want to know and the town council can do nothing, yet we get the flack. We will end up with parking anarchy in the town because no one will grasp the nettle!”

SODC Cabinet Member for Finance, Property, Economic Development and Facilities, Rodney Mann, replied: “The police can’t do everything. If the people of Thame think parking is a policing priority, they can let that be known through the NAG (Neighbourhood Action Group) which should then make it more of a priority for the police.

“We cannot expect everyone in the district to take up the cost.”

The Mayor, Cllr Jeannette Matelot Green said that she feared businesses would park everywhere which would leave less spaces for visitors to the town.

Mr Buckle suggested that the town council add its voice and write to the government too.

  • Support for Costa Coffee

Dear Editor, I am rather surprised at the rejection of the Costa Coffee Application.

Do Thame Businesses and Thame First not realise that to generate business in Thame, what we offer at the moment is not good enough for potential visitors from peripheral areas to Thame?

It is the Chain Stores & multiples that attract these clients to Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Bicester and Oxford.

I strongly believe that it is short-sightedness from the Town Council and if you are using the argument that there are too many Coffee shops in Thame, what about too many Hairdressing Salons, as I understand yet another one is opening in Buttermarket!!

    Yours sincerely
    Jenny & Brian Hamilton

  • United extend their lead at the top

MATCH REPORT: Thame United 2, Henley Town 0, 09/03/10 -League match – CONTRIBUTED

Thame United extended their lead at the top of the league at Wallingford on Tuesday evening when they defeated Henley Town 2-0. The visitors have twice drawn with rival title contenders Wokingham & Emmbrook, so a close game was anticipated. In the event Thame controlled the first half but, for the second game in succession, were under pressure after the break.

United started brightly and after 2 minutes Luke Ricketts forced a save from the visiting keeper. A minute later, however Ricketts met a beautiful cross from Ben Connolly and coolly side-footed the ball pass the keeper from 8-yards. Thame increased their lead in the 21st minute when Nik Rhodes met a well-taken Ricketts corner with a powerful far-post header. Thame were enjoying 70% of ball possession with only occasional ineffective threats to their own goal. It could have been 3-0 shortly before half time when Aaron Rogers pounced on a defensive error to hit a 25-yard lobed shot which beat the goalkeeper before glancing off the crossbar.

The visitors started the second half strongly and Thame Keeper, Lee Orkney was busier in the first few minutes than he had been in the whole of the first half. Thame came back and the hardy, but cold, spectators were treated to some entertaining end-to-end football, with Rogers again going close for Thame. The final minutes saw United defending their lead with Orkney forced to make a good save from a point-blank header. Minutes later the visitors were awarded a free kick about 20-yards from goal. Thame were still preparing their wall when a quick-thinking Henley player took the kick which was heading for the bottom right hand corner before the alert Orkney showed his experience and agility by diving and pushing the ball wide.

Overall, it was a good performance from Thame, who are currently playing well enough to win the league title.

Thame United: Orkney, Newell, J. Way, Cowan, N. Rhodes, El-Kassir, Connelly (Wakelin), A. Rhodes, Braun, Rogers (Jones), Ricketts.

United are at home for the next two Saturdays. On 13th February they entertain Finchampstead, whilst on 20th Rayners lane are the visitors.

  • Thame set to welcome Finchampstead – Contributed

THAME United entertain Finchampstead at the Hithercroft Stadium on Saturday 13th March in a game that will be as crucial in their quest for promotion as their last two excellent wins against Holyport and Henley.

We cannot afford to be complacent said Asst Manager Frank Thompson, it?s so easy to drop points at present with the number of games that are having to be played and if you are not at your best you will slip up. We then follow this up with a Tuesday night return match against Henley Town. It?s a bit disappointing that we have to play Henley on consecutive Tuesday nights but with all the bad weather we?ve had its inevitable that fixtures will fall like this. Now that we have worked our way to the top we want to ensure that we stay there and that only comes from hard work and commitment and the lads are demonstrating this at present. When you are at the top everyone wants to beat you and if you do not stay on top of your game, that will happen in this league.
