  • 26/03/10…….Land Rover Defenders owner beware!

THE police are warning owners of Land Rover Defenders to be extra vigilant as there have been five stolen in the South Oxfordshire area and three in the Vale area since the beginning of this year.

These vehicles do not normally have any standard immobilisers or alarms fitted, or if they do, they tend to be poorly equipped to prevent the theft of the vehicle. The vehicles are being stolen overnight and often from rural locations. If you see anything suspicious, please call the police on 08458 505 505 or 999 for a crime in progress.

Thames Valley Police are writing to all Land Rover owners to advise them of this problem and to offer some crime prevention advice. If anyone wants more information please contact your Crime Reduction Advisor on 08458 505 505.

  • Change your clocks, service your smoke alarms

WITH the clocks going forward one hour this weekend, 27/03/10, Oxfordshire County Council?s Fire and Rescue Service is reminding people of the need to regularly maintain their smoke alarms.

Don?t forget clocks spring forward by one hour this weekend, officially the start of British Summer Time. So set your clocks forward by one hour on Sunday 28 March 2010.

The change officially for the Start of British Summer Time takes place at 01.00 Greenwich Mean Time, so set your clocks forward before going out on Saturday night to avoid getting up late in the morning!

We may be losing an hour but with extra daylight in the evenings and a long summer ahead, there?s plenty to look forward to after the clocks change.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service attended 302 accidental house fires in 2009. 32 per cent of these did not have a smoke alarm fitted. Most of the injuries and destruction to property could have been easily avoided if smoke alarms had been regularly tested and therefore working.

Mike Bingham of Oxfordshire County Council?s Fire and Rescue Service said, ?We advise people to check their smoke alarms every six months and as the clocks change twice a year, we are encouraging people to make the link.

?As you change the clocks around your home, remember to check your smoke alarms too. It only takes a minute to check these small items, but it could save the lives of you and your loved ones.?

    Peace of mind
Smoke alarms are inexpensive and available in DIY stores and at many supermarkets. They should be fitted on every level of your home in accordance with the manufacturer?s instructions provided.

For longer term protection and peace of mind, it is a good idea to fit 10-year smoke alarms.
Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue service offers free home fire risk checks to identify potential fire risks and advise what to do to reduce or prevent them. For more information, please contact the Community Fire Safety Team on 0800 325 999.

Councillor Judith Heathcoat, Oxfordshire County Council?s Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities said, ?We know that smoke alarms save lives, as they can give you and your family the necessary warning to get out in the early stages of a fire.

?We want to remind people to fit and maintain a working smoke alarm and buy themselves valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999.?

How Do I Look After My Smoke Alarm?

Once a week ? test the alarm by pressing the button.
    Once a year ? change the battery (unless it’s a 10-year alarm).
Twice a year ? vacuum and wipe the smoke alarm casing to ensure dust isn?t blocking the sensor chamber.
Never – remove the battery to use it for other purposes.
    365 Alive
Please visit Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service’s 365alive campaign at www.365alive.co.uk for safety information and pledge to:

    – check your smoke alarm once a week
    – wear a seat belt in a moving vehicle
    – have a fire escape plan

  • Identity theft and how to deal with it (Contributed)

WHAT should you do if you suddenly get a letter from a bank demanding payment for a debt of which you are unaware? This may be the first indication that you may have been a victim of identity theft.

Identity theft is a type of fraud which takes place when someone you don’t know gets hold of your personal details and uses them to apply for credit or to open an account in your name.

If you have been a victim of identity theft you will usually not have to pay for any money you have lost, unless it can be shown that you have acted fraudulently or without reasonable care, for example by keeping your PIN number written down with your card. You must act quickly:

? contact the bank straight away, keep a record of all conversations you have with them, and copies of any letters sent or received
? report the matter to the police, and get a crime reference number
? check with the credit reference agencies (details below) whether any applications for credit have been made in your name. If they have, you can ask to have the information removed from your file
? if you suspect that someone has got hold of your details by stealing your mail, or has fraudulently applied to get mail redirected from your address, you should contact the Royal Mail Customer Enquiry Number on: 08457 740740
? contact CIFAS, the UK’s Fraud Prevention Service at www.cifas.org.uk. For a small fee they will make sure that anyone applying for credit in your name is automatically double-checked.

    The credit reference agencies are:

  • Cat found lost in Thame returns home – to Long Crendon

A CAT found wandering in Thame almost two weeks ago, has been claimed by his owner, after a friend saw the cat’s picture on ThameNews.Net. But how Smokey, as we now know he is called, got from Long Crendon to Thame, around three miles away, remains a mystery. One possibility is that he climbed into a vehicle without the driver noticing and jump out in Thame.

Smokey’s owner, Kate Major, went along to Thame Vets, Sprintz and Nash on Monday to see if the cat, found in coombe Hill Crescent, Thame, by PCSO Diane Jackson, was indeed her missing Smokey.

Kate told Thamenews.net that 11 month-old Smokey seems a bit withdrawn at the moment, not interested in playing with his brother or wanting to be fussed, but she hopes he will soon settle down after his adventure.

  • Dumb show coming to the Players Theatre – When? 10/04/10

THAME Players in association with Creative Cow, are soon to present the explosive dark comedy DUMB SHOW by Joe Penhall.

NOT SUCH A DUMB SHOW (Contributed)

THAME Players welcome the return of the Devon based Creative Cow Theatre Company to perform Joe Penhall?s comedy, Dumb Show. Creative Cow is rapidly building a reputation as a highly professional company performing superb drama. In 2009 they performed Bill McIlwarith?s the Anniversary to a highly appreciative Thame audience. Dumb Show will only further their reputation.

How far will people go to destroy a celebrity? And what is privacy when the whole world knows who you are? Barry, a hapless TV comic, is a sucker for celebrity status. He?s an easy target for ?financial executives? John and Jane, with their promise of fat fees and the five-star treatment he deserves. First performed at the Royal Court, London, Laurence Olivier Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Joe Penhall explores how Barry deals with an avaricious media in this explosive dark comedy. As Barry says, ?A horse walks into a bar and the barman says ?Why the long face?? It?s funny because it?s a horse. Not because the horse may or may not be alcohol dependent. The whole point about jokes is that they?re just jokes. They?re not true stories?. The Daily Telegraph described the play as ?superb ? mesmerizing ? utterly persuasive?.

Dumb Show will be performed at The Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame at 7.45pm on Saturday 10th April. Tickets cost just

  • 25/03/10…Thame ladies hockey hold division leaders to a draw

THAME Ladies Hockey celebrated a well-deserved draw against top-of-the-division side, Oxford University Ladies third team, on Saturday. Thame are currently second in the division with one game left to play.

From the outset, Thame exerted a great deal of pressure on the division leaders who have won their last 12 games, scoring 108 goals. The more experienced Thame side kept a tight formation that thwarted the oppositions? attempts at attack. Particularly effective was the strong defence in the centre of the pitch by Lynch, Williamson and Alexander.

On winning the ball, Thame showed the strength of their attacking players Greenwood-Hughes, Allen, Hardy and Dawson who opened multiple chances at goal. Unfortunately the ball did not find the back of the net despite some excellent shots.

Although ending in a goalless draw, this match was significant in showing the level that Thame Ladies hockey are capable of playing at, which bodes well should they earn promotion at the end of this season.

Thame Hockey Club meet for generally fitness training at Thame Leisure Centre on Mondays from 8.00-9.00pm and hockey training on Wednesdays from 8-9.30pm for adults (13 years +) and on Saturdays from 9-10.30am for juniors (8-14 years). New players of all abilities are welcome to come along. For more information, see the website: www.thamehockey.co.uk.
