  • 27/09/10….A defensive Chinnor take Redingensians 22 – 10

NATIONAL 3, South West – September 25, 2010 – Match Report by BillO’Donnell: In a fitful and injury riven match, Chinnor eventually prevailed against their Berkshire opponents Redingensians by 22 points to 10, thanks to three tries from centre Matt Goode.

Right from the kick off, Chinnor had to rely on their defensive game against an attacking Redingensians side who had most use of the ball. However, the first score of the match came from a rare foray into Redingensians half when Matt Goode slipped around the blind side to open Chinnor?s account. With a touchline conversion from Hewitt, Chinnor were 7-0 up with 12 minutes played. In the 20th minute, Chinnor lost their first player of the day to injury when No 8 Mowbray limped off to be replaced by Adam Hastings.

With Jackman moving to the No 8 position, Chinnor began to gain greater mobility and involvement in the match. Immediately after the substitution, Chinnor were down to 14 when hooker Tattersall was adjudged to have killed the ball. The resultant penalty attempt from debutant ?Gensians fly half De Jager from in front of the posts, might have hit the corner flag if it had travelled any distance at all.

However, Redingensians kept up their attack on the Chinnor line and, on the 23rd minute, tight head Baker barrelled over for their first try. The conversion attempt from de Jager was wide of the mark. In a promising counter attack, Stoop went down heavily and was stretchered from the field. Shortly afterwards, Chinnor?s pressure led to a successful penalty goal from Hewitt to give Chinnor a 10-5 lead going into half time.

Shortly after the restart, Chinnor?s Powell, on for the injured Stoop, caused the referee to reach for the yellow card to reduce Chinnor again to 14. Seizing the one man advantage, Gensians, from a rolling maul, scored their second try with Castell scoring. The kick was again missed and the hapless de Jager was immediately replaced by Brown.

With the match tied at 10-10, Pickett then went off with knee trouble to be replaced by Stock. A poorly thrown pass from Gensians was chased by Goode whose harrying caused both Redingensians defenders to fumble the loose ball allowing Goode to casually pick up the ball and dot it down for his, and Chinnor?s, second try. The conversion was missed and Chinnor lead 15-10.

Redingensians continued to attack but Goode ruined their day with a late try when his break through the centre and his strength in carrying himself and two defenders over the line earned him his hat trick. With Hewitt?s conversion, the days scoring was finished with Chinnor winning 22-10.

Redingensians will rue their handling errors and their lack of a place kicker and will trouble many other sides this season. Only some last ditch tackles prevented further scores for them ? but Chinnor can tackle well at times.

Chinnor had another bits and pieces game with limited possession of the ball. Jackman on his move to No 8 cleared up a lot of wayward ball and created several turnovers. Tattersall after his long lay off is getting back to his best and was defensively strong. Well done to Joe Winpenny who was needed to play all three front row positions during the game. The star was undoubtedly Matt Goode whose speedy and muscular determination brought home the goods for Chinnor.

Hopefully, all parts will click soon but winning ugly will have to do for now.

    Scorers:

    Chinnor: Goode 3T; Hewitt 2C, 1PG

    Redingensians: Baker T; Castell T

Chinnor team: Williams, Corpe, Goode, Stoop (Powell 30), Serrano, Hewitt, Hopwood, Winpenny, Tattersall, Pickett (Stock 47), Hutchings, Smith, Jackman (Hastings 67), Harrison, Mowbray (Hastings 20)

    Replacements: Stock, Hastings, Powell

  • 24/09/10…..New internet safety programme to help protect children online

A new internet safety programme is running in Oxfordshire to prevent children giving out personal information online.

The Internet Safety Scenario is organised by the Junior Citizen Trust which is run by Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and Trading Standards.

The trust offers different safety scenarios to year six school children, free of charge, to help them make decisions and learn from their mistakes in real life situations. Every year about 4,500 children visit the Junior Citizen sessions, which are held at are held at Rewley Road Fire Station in Oxford.

    Raising awareness

The new internet safety scenario has been trialled since January and is has now rapidly becoming a favourite with both children and teachers alike. It involves an interactive scenario to make children more aware that they may not know the person they are talking to online. The scenario educates pupils on why they should not share addresses, phone numbers and other personal information via social networking sites.

The children are also taught about the Child Exploitation & Online Protection (CEOP) Centre report button that is becoming a common feature of social networking sites. By clicking the button, members can report bullying, grooming, virus and hacking concerns, and access the latest advice. They will also find details about their local police and be able to contact specially trained CEOP officers. It also provides direct links to other help like Childline and Beatbullying.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, Judith Heathcoat said: “This new internet safety scenario promises to be a superb addition to the different safety scenarios already in existence and used by the young school children of Oxfordshire. It helps to build on the Junior Citizen’s very successful programme of education which teaches awareness and personal safety.”

SATURDAY night saw The Spread Eagle Hotel, Thame, transformed into what looked like an episode of Good Night Sweetheart, when the town celebrated to 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a Hangar Dance.

“The evening was a great success,” said Cllr Nigel Champken-Woods, one of the organisers. “The Ballroom at the spread looked superb with RAF Ensign, Union Flag, Parachute and an airfield scene as the backdrop for the evening. The ?Big Band? Sound Force were really good especially when the came back after a break dressed in uniform.

“The vignettes of the stories of a WAAF Controller, a member of the Ground crew, the Pilot and finally Winston?s ?Never in the field of Human Conflict? speech were very poignant and well received.

“Many of those attending dressed for the occasion some in uniforms, some of the ladies were especially good with period hairstyles the lot, however there were quite a few spivs doing deals in corners!

  • 23/09/10…..Thame killer jailed for rape

A man from Thame, already in prison for murder, was sentenced today for the abduction and rape of a 15-year-old girl in Maidenhead 30 years ago.

Ronald Cheshire, 52, was jailed today for nine years for the attack that took place in Maidenhead in May, 1980. He took the girl to a building site and asked her if she was a virgin before raping her, telling her he had a gun.

Cheshire was finally charged after 30 years, after evidence was obtained against him following scientific advances in DNA.

Det Supt Barry Halliday, said: ?I am satisfied with today?s sentence, which reflects the seriousness of Cheshire?s crime and the fact he evaded justice for so long. Cheshire originally pleaded guilty in July, as he knew the evidence against him was too strong to dispute.

?This result shows that offender?s who think they have got away with a crime years or even decades later, that the MCRT will be doing their utmost to bring them to justice.

?I hope today?s result will give victims of serious sexual crime the confidence to report incidents, the confidence that they will be investigated fully, and the confidence that Thames Valley Police will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice. This applies to both historic and current offences.

?This group of officers from the MCRT (Major Crime Review Team), together with our partners, remain dedicated in our commitment to ensuring the very highest of standards of investigation are maintained in solving such crimes and seeking justice for victims and those surviving family members who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

?Our neighbourhoods need to be assured that Thames Valley Police examine all such unsolved crimes and this latest case is one of a significant number of cases being developed.?

  • 24/09/10…….County’s digital future comes under the spotlight

OXFORDSHIRE?S digital future will come under the spotlight at a conference being held this weekend, called OxOnline 2010: Connecting Oxfordshire.

The Euro MEP for the South-East Region, James Elles, will join communication minister and Wantage MP Ed Vaizey on Saturday (September 25) at the Culham Conference Centre. The event is being organised by the Oxfordshire Economic Partnership (OEP).

David Doughty, chairman of the partnership, is reported to have said: ?This digital summit is the first step in a campaign to make sure the county is hardwired into the nation?s digital future. There will be a series of events involving local authorities and planners, culminating in a formal strategy round about the middle of next year.?

He added: ?Planners need to know exactly how to instruct builders and developers to install fibre into all new developments.?

According to experts, only about a third of the county has a better than 50 per cent chance of receiving the next generation ADSL by 2015 ? and rural areas more than five miles from a BT exchange are most likely to be ignored. At present, mobile signals often fail only a few miles from Oxford city centre, and broadband is ?patchy? at best in many areas, according to Mr Doughty.
