    Hurricanes V Cyclones
    43 ? 22

Thame Hurricanes and Thame Cyclones met this week in a hard fought local derby. Both teams played amazingly well and determination was sought throughout. After leading 8 ? 5 at the end of the first quarter, Cyclones lost a player to injury and had to battle on with 6 players. Hurricanes slowly made the extra player count and with some increasing pressure from Cyclones continued to build the lead to a final score of 43 ? 22. Both teams played with great enthusiasm and team spirit.

    06/10/10 – Cyclones 14, V Cherokees 2, 33

New Team Thame Cyclones faced tough opposition in Cherokees 2 with their strong defence and accurate fast ball passing right from the off. Cyclones defence Kelly and Kelly, GD and GK, put in maximum effort but Cherokees assertive play made it difficult for Cyclones to get off to a good start. With fresh legs from C Shelly and GD Sue in the second quarter Cyclones proved stronger, particularly around the centre of the court. Again GA Lynne demonstrated some solid shooting from superb feeding by WA Amy. With the coach?s support the team managed to pull it back with some determined play and good presenting of the ball. Cyclones fought hard in this tough game and are determined to learn from their mistakes as they progress through the season.

Team: Jodie Hine (captain), Kelly Quigley, Kelly Guscott, Shelley Weeks, Amy Scullard, Lynne Jones, Jean Garrett, Karen Riddleston and Sue Farrow.

Thame Typhoons V Leighton Buzzard Typhoons
    21 ? 7
Thursday evening saw Thame Typhoons face their first game of the season. The team were nervous and not quite sure what to expect, however everyone managed to shrug of those fears and get on with the task at hand, winning the match. Starting from the first centre, taken by Leighton Buzzard Typhoons, everyone was ready. With a good interception, the ball was heading down to the Thame shooters and in went a goal. This was the beginning of a great game for the Thame Typhoons. Thame went on to dominate with some excellent circle defence from GD Emma Pearce and GK Megan Tiddy. WD Katie Vokes provided good support, being ready for the backwards pass when needed. Excellent centre court play between WA Holly Allen and C Tanya Batchellier and consistent shooting from both GS Jennie Rayment and GA Layla Batchellier saw Thame Typhoons win convincingly. Overall the game was fast paced and Thame kept the Leighton Buzzard on their toes. Thame Typhoons worked hard and took away a well deserved win.

Team: Layla Batchellier (captain), Jennie Rayment, Holly Allen, Tanya Batchellier, Katie Vokes, Emma Pearce and Megan Tiddy.

  • 06/10/10…Feared cuts could effect policing in Thame

A THAME police officer has expressed concern that looming cuts in police funding could do away with PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers).

“There are no pressing problems in Thame at the moment,” PC Russell Hounslow told Thame Town Council last night, “and looking at the crime figures for September over the last three years, crime is falling in the town.”

“At the moment we are not quite sure how the cuts will affect policing in Thame, including what the future is for PCSOs. But if they are taken away, that would probably put more pressure on uniformed officers working in Thame.”

PC Hounslow said he generally welcomed the introduction of the Street Pastors who, he explained, will probably patrol the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights (and early mornings) during the winter, and the open spaces where people congegate, in the summer.

“The Street Pastors will be extra pairs of eyes and ears,” he said, “which will help, and hopefully crime will again fall in Thame.”

Following the disbanding of the Thame NAG (Neighbourhood Action Group), which helped set priorities for local policing, PC Hounslow will now be liaising with the town council more and his team are organising more ‘Have your say’ meetings, usually held in the Co-op cafe, where local people can meet officers and discuss any concerns.

In answer to a question from a Cllr Owen Davies, PC Hounslow said that very little crime had taken place at this year’s fun fair, and that trouble with a gang from Aylesbury was able to be averted by use of CCTV cameras and Stewards following them around the town.

  • 06/10/10….Friends too drugged to help drowning friend

FRIENDS of a drowning Wheatley man high on Ketamine, were too drugged themselves to help their dying friend, an inquest heard.

Graffiti artist Dan Lewis, of Templars Close, Wheatley, aged 29, who also used the name Halfcut Art, had snorted the drug on Wednesday, June 2, before stripping off his clothes and jumping into the river at the bathing spot behind West Oxford Community Centre, known as Tumbling Bay.

Dan’s friends, Alan ?Ted? Bedborough, Max Wilk and Eleanor Cooke were all with him and all gave evidence to the Coroner. They either thought he was joking or were too “mashed” to realise what was happening.

Toxicology tests carried out on Dan’s body revealed traces of alcohol and 2.3 milligrams of ketamine per litre of blood.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, the Coroner, Nicholas Gardiner said the drug could have caused partial paralysis, affecting Dan’s ability to swim.

He said: ?After taking this dose of ketamine, if you place yourself in a watery setting, that is a very dangerous thing to do. He shouted for help, no help was forthcoming.?

He was told that Oxford City Council did not provide lifebelts at Tumbling Bay because it was not on a riverside footpath.

Dan was a founder-member of the anual Arcane Festival whose website currently includes a tribute to him.
