  • 26/07/11…..Thame council to agree response to Core Strategy consultation

THAME Town Council will discuss and agree its formal response to the latest phase of SODC’s consultation on its amendments to its future housing plans, next Tuesday, August 2.

The plan, or ‘Core Strategy’ will set out the number and sites for new housing in the district to 2017. The amendments have had to be made in response to comments and guidance from the Planning Inspector examining the draft Core strategy, that SODC cannot depend on the appearance of ‘windfall sites’ for some of its allocation of housing, but must specify planned sites.

This has resulted in more allocated houses for Thame and a revised plan for development on SODC’s preferred location for large-scale development, site F, the old pig farm in Oxford Road. The town council is supporting the building of a one-site secondary school in Oxford Road and new homes on the consequentially empty, Lord Williams’s Lower school, in Towersey Road, Thame.

The town council’s discussion and vote will follow the presentation of a report by Jake Collinge, the town council’s Planning advisor.

Any member of the public who wishes to speak at the meeting, must apply to do so before 5pm on the previous day, August 1, 2011.

  • 22/07/11…..Awards for town residents ‘who make our town special’

FIVE Thame residents, who in the words of the town’s Mayor, make our town special, received Civic Awards from him at a ceremony at the Barns Centre last night (Thursday).

In his opening speech, the Mayor, Cllr David Bretherton, said: ” I have the privilege as Mayor to visit many local towns like Aylesbury and Henley, where I hear their Mayors say what a special town they have. Well I think our town is special too and we need to celebrate it more.

“What makes Thame special? Is it the thriving town centre with its may independent shops? Is it because we are a Market town which still has a market? Is it the town council staff who do such a brilliant job making the town look nice? Is it the architecture of the buildings and long history of the town?

“Actually, it is all of these things and more. It’s you, the people of the town and more importantly all those who contribute to life in the town by running the various clubs and voluntary organisations, those of you who the town council and myself as Mayor have invited here to show our appreciation of the work that you do to make our town special.”

    The five awards went to:

Young Achiever Award – Cosette Jackson; Who “is a fantastic student and excels in everything she does” both inside and outside school, training approximately 28 hrs a week at gymnastics, for which she is part of the International squad.

The Service with a Smile Award – Jeremy Smith, of the coffee shop, Time Out, in the High Street. His nomination said: “He always greets people with a friendly welcome, his service is outstanding and he goes that extra mile to help people,” whether it be, quickly rushing to help someone struggling with a pushchair or offering water for a dog brought into the shop.

The Voluntary Organisation of the Year Award – Thame & District Round Table; Described by the Mayor as: “A fantastic group of people who work tirelessly throughout the year to raise money for good causes…and who do so much of what makes Thame tick.”

  • 20/07/11….Thame partnership Chair responds to criticism of Shop fronts improvement scheme

THE following letter was sent to The Thame Gazette on 7th July 2011, in response to a letter of “outrage” about the Shop fronts improvement scheme in Thame. It is reproduced with the permission of the writer:

    To the Editor, Thame Gazette

    Dear Sir

I write in response to a letter from Mr Steve Roberts published in the Thame Gazette on Friday 10th June regarding the ?Shop Front Improvement Scheme?.

Mr Roberts could have saved his ?outrage? by directing his concerns to me. As the chair of the organisation delivering this project, I would have been able to reassure him that public money is being spent for the good of the town, and not for to ?fund private businesses, let alone banks?.

Mr Roberts has grasped the wrong end of the stick and is trying to beat us with it! He has grossly misrepresented the project and our work, and I?d like to correct some of his statements.

It is true that 21st Century Thame has secured

  • 19/07/11….Get out and about with the family this summer!

OXFORDSHIRE FAMILIES are being encouraged to use online walking guides in order to get the best out of the county’s great outdoors during the school summer holiday period.

A series of new family-friendly walk maps have recently been published by Oxfordshire County Council, which cover rural routes under one-and-a-half miles in length and identify features that people can take advantage of in individual areas across Oxfordshire, such as wildlife and local attractions.

The routes take in a range of landscapes which include meadows, woodlands, nature reserves, rivers and lakes.

Information and maps on how to access green space in urban areas of the county are also now available to view. The highlighted areas are close to several county council children’s centres.

Families can also take advantage of suggested countryside activities, which are aimed at children aged three to 11. Fun outdoor opportunities range from learning about camouflage to listening to a countryside concert.

People wanting longer treks can explore information about circular walks which take in some of the county’s most beautiful areas of countryside, such as the Windrush Valley and the Chiltern Hills.

The in-depth guide to the historic 65-mile Oxfordshire Way walking route – a route which runs from the Cotswold town of Bourton-on-the-Water to the banks of the River Thames at Henley – includes up-to-date large scale maps and details of locations of geological and historical interest.

    Great opportunity

Councillor Rodney Rose, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We are extremely lucky in Oxfordshire to have such wonderful countryside right on our doorstep. Our revamped website offers a huge amount of information about various walking routes that people can take advantage of.

“The school summer holidays are an ideal opportunity for families to get out and about and to enjoy the county’s countryside.”

  • 19/07/11…..Changes to Incapacity Benefit – Advice from Thame Citizens Advice

THE government has started to re-assess people currently claiming Incapacity Benefit (IB) in order to decide if they qualify for the new Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

If you currently receive IB, the Department for Work and Pensions will write to you between now and March 2014 about reassessing your benefit entitlement.

First of all, you will have to fill out a questionnaire which asks about your health condition or disability. You must complete this questionnaire with as much detail as possible and return it by the date requested. If you don?t, your benefit may be affected.

You may then be asked to attend a face-to-face assessment. You will be asked a number of questions to help determine what you are able to do and whether you might be capable of work.

If the assessment finds you meet the qualifying conditions for ESA, you will be automatically transferred to this benefit. If the assessment finds that you’re not entitled to ESA, your Incapacity Benefit will stop. You will then have to make a new claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or another benefit that suits your needs.

If you attend an assessment and are unhappy with the way it’s carried out, or you don’t agree with its outcome, you can get advice on what to do from your local CAB.
