  • 19/03/12…..More FUN attractions for Music In The Park

AS well as the fantastic music programme, Music in the Park 2012 will also have some exciting fun activities to add to your enjoyment. Mix 96 radio will be back with their popular mega slide, and an inflatable bungee run.

A new attraction for this year will be ?land zorbing?. For the uninitiated, this involves getting into a large inflatable ball and rolling round the zorbing area. All great fun for children, but they may have to get behind their parents in the queue!

With a beer tent and a wide variety of catering and trade stalls selling a wide range of goods, there really will be something for everyone.

    Sponsors and volunteers still needed

The organisers of Music in the Park are committed to keeping ticket prices low to make sure everyone is able attend this great local celebration. However, they are only able to do so thanks to the generosity of the event?s sponsors and volunteers. This allows the organisers to put on a great event at affordable prices and still raise money for the Friends of Elms Park so that they can improve the park and encourage its use by all members of the community.

This year?s main sponsors are Arriva, Soha, ALR Services and David Wilson Homes. The new ‘Beats, Breaks and Electronica’ music venue, The Bubble, is being sponsored by new local music management and promotions company, FastestDog. There are still attractive sponsorship packages available for local businesses wanting to raise their profile. Simply complete the form on the website: www.musicinthepark.org.uk

Volunteers to help out on the day are also vital to the success of the event. Anyone wanting to volunteer can also apply using the form on the website.

  • 19/03/12….Thame fails to flow against Holyport

LEAGUE MATCH REPORT: Date: 17/03/12 – Holyport 3,Thame United 1. Contributed by Bob Dixon. THAME United were defeated 3-1 at Holyport last Saturday. At kick off, Thame were five league places higher than their hosts, having plated three fewer games, so, on paper, a defeat looked unlikely. United however did not play well, and seemed unable to develop their normal flowing game. The game saw the debut of Josh Cockrell in goal for Thame.

Thame started brightly, and within two minutes a Stuart Barr lob forced a good save from the home keeper. United took the lead in the seventh minute when James Faulkner hit a speculative 40-yard lobbed shot from the left, over the keeper?s head, the ball bouncing as it crossed the line. Against the run of play, the home side equalised 4 minutes later when a ball from the right was knocked home from 12-yards. Louis Cordice went close before a few minutes later; Luke Ricketts was badly fowled as he ran at goal. Even the home supporters expected a red card to be shown but inexplicably, the offender received a friendly warning. Thame were on the back foot for the remainder of the first half but it was still 1-1 at half time.

Possession was fairly even in the second half although chances were few. Twenty minutes after the restart Dan West forced an excellent save from the home keeper. Holyport increased their lead from a corner with a simple far post header in the 70th minute. With about 15 minutes to play Thame?s were reduced to 10 men when Mitchell Meredith was dismissed for a tackle which was not as severe as the one on Connelly. The home side increased their lead with a minute remaining when a 15-yard shot took a deflection, giving Cockrell no chance.

Thame United: Cockrell, I Pykett, Hall, Barr (Meredith), N Rhodes, Willett, Connelly, West (Wakelin), Cordice (Grey), Faulkner, Ricketts.

Thame do not have a game scheduled for next Saturday (24th). Their next home game is on Saturday 31st March when Reading Town are the visitors.

  • 19/03/12….Waiter gets life for decapitating his boss

A court heard today how a waiter with a history of mental illness, took a cheese knife from a cutlery store, walked down two floors at The Oxfordshire Golf Club, repeatedly stabbed another man with it and then used it to saw off the victims head.

Jonathan Limani, 33, a Serbian by birth, changed his plea at was to be the beginning of his trial today, for the killing of the club’s restaurant manager, Christopher Varian, aged 32, who was raised in Chinnor, near Thame.

Witnesses described how they mistook Limani’s movements for an attempt at resuscitating his victim, when they found him covered in blood, with the body, amongst rubbish bins in the service yard at the rear of the building.

At Oxford Crown Court, Limani pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility, and in a rare ‘hybrid’ sentence, was given Life imprisonment for a minimum of 19 years and ordered under Section 45A of the Mental Health Act to be contained at Broadmoor Hospital without limit of time, to continue treatment for Paranoid Schizophrenia.

Two forensic psychiatrists gave evidence that they believed Limani probably has an underlying psychopathic personality disorder, meaning that he would be able to be manipulative and deceitful and hide any recurring symptoms of paranoia once treated.

In sentencing, Judge Anthony King therefore concluded: “It is likely that you (Jonathan Limani) will be a danger to the public for the rest of your natural life.

“What you did was violent and brutal in the extreme. In some sort of delusional state, you selected the cheese knife, went down two flights of stairs, way-layed him (Chris Varian) in the smoking area and used savage and extreme force in order to complete the offence of severing his head from his body.”

Chris Varian’s family had issued several Victim statements from which their profound shock, incomprehension and pain were obvious. His sister, Katerina described how the whole family had been left with “such a macabre image that won’t go away.”

She and her brother Roger spoke of the Varians’ strong family ties and love for their brother, and how the family had been scarred by an event that had rocked their lives just as he was getting into his stride in his career.

After hearing of the added trauma the family had had to endure because of the repeated adjournments and delays since the killing on August 21, 2010, Judge King concluded: “My heart goes out to the family for the extreme length of time it has taken to resolve these matters.”

Det Ch Insp Steve Tolmie, Senior Investigating Officer, said: ?Thames Valley Police has a duty to thoroughly investigate all incidents of this nature and present the facts together with the Crown Prosecution Service to a court.

?Every murder is by its very nature traumatic and very emotional for the family and friends involved but this particular case is horrific due to the level of injuries inflicted.

?This may be the end of the judicial chapter but as far as the family are concerned, their pain and loss will always remain. My thoughts continue to be with them at this very difficult time.?

  • 19/03/12….Tidy Thame Day 2012 – Let the Sun Shine!!

Dear Editor, Tidy Thame is taking place this Sunday 25th march 2012 from 10am to 4pm with refreshments provided at the Scouts HQ at Southern Road at the end of the day for all the volunteers to get together and share good news stories from the day.

This is the 2nd Tidy Thame day and last year saw mountains of rubbish collected and removed from our streets and footpaths.

I would like to thank all the volunteers in advance and if any residents would like to take part please go out in your local area and give it a spring clean. An information leaflet showing the drop off points for rubbish collected along with bags and tabards are available from the Town Hall.

Of course the best way to keep Thame Tidy is for people not to drop litter in the first place and I would appeal to all of our community, young or old to use the many bins provided or take your litter home with you!
When the sun shines it is lovely to see so many people enjoying our well maintained parks and open spaces but my heart sinks when I see all the litter that is left at the end of the day strewn on the ground Its not ?Rocket Science? guys?.PUT IT IN THE BIN!

This Sunday will see a lot of community spirited people blitzing Thame and picking up other peoples litter which will make Thame look a lot brighter, nicer place to live, work, rest and play but please, please can we keep the other 364 days a year just as clean!

One of the community spirited residents to help last year was my friend (and a lot of peoples friend) Ben Guest who sadly died recently. This year?s Tidy Thame Day is dedicated to Ben who was one of the most giving people I knew?. We could all do with following his example!
    Onwards and Upwards!
    Cllr Adam Buckland X

  • 16/03/12…We Need To Talk About Kevin at Thame Cinema 4 All

TOMORROW: Friday, March 16 – We Need To Talk About Kevin; 112 mins, 15 cert. Dir: Lynne Ramsay. Starring Ezra Miller, John C Reilly, Tilda Swinton

WHAT happens when bad children happen to good parents? Does it mean they are not, in fact, as good as they had imagined themselves to be?

With these questions, British director Lynne Ramsay has created a nihilist tale of guilt and horror. Working with co-writer Rory Kinnear, she has adapted Lionel Shriver?s prizewinning 2003 novel ? whose much-spoofed title is now part of the language ? about a woman whose teenage son Kevin has committed a Columbine-style massacre.

And what does an independent-minded, career woman do when she is landed with a nasty little boy, precisely the kind of smug competitive male she has spent her whole life trying to subdue and surpass?

What American Psycho was to consumerism, We Need to Talk About Kevin is to both sexism and feminism, a brilliantly extreme parable, operatically pessimistic. In the end, the audience is left with the same unanswerable question: what made Kevin do it? Nature or nurture? A mother supplies both. Kevin is flesh of her flesh and perhaps an inability to judge him is her awful biological destiny.

It is tremendously acted by Tilda Swinton and by Ezra Miller, with inspired images from cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. A beautifully made and thought- provoking film.

Thame Cinema is based in the Thame Players Theatre in Nelson Street Thame.

All films start at 8pm (unless otherwise stated) and doors open 30 minutes before each film. Admission is just
