  • 20/06/12… New scheme for Cattlemarket must be ‘viable, sustainable’

THAME’S Cattlemarket Action Group (CMAG) has vowed to support the town council’s request that the district council finances an assessment of a ‘viable’ mixed-use, community scheme for the site.

At a meeting of Thame Town Council last night (19/06), Jenny Richardson, speaking on behalf of CMAG, said that her organisation supported Thame Town Council?s proposed request to South Oxfordshire District Council to finance the assessment of a viable, mixed use scheme on the Cattlemarket and car park site in North Street, Thame.

Thame Cattlemarket site is currently the focus of a planning application from Sainsbury’s for a supermarket.

    PART OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

The town council’s proposal, put forward by the Town Mayor, Nigel Champken Woods, will also ask that South Oxfordshire District Council agree that the assessment be considered as a priority in working in partnership with the Thame Town Council in its development of the Neighbourhood Plan, and that it be completed by March 2014.

Jenny Richardson told the council: “CMAG would like to offer support, in whatever way possible, to further this assessment, with an aim to ensure that the Cattlemarket site is used for the best possible benefit to the people of Thame, and that a significant part of the site is developed for community uses.

“We recognise,” she said, “that any plan for the Cattlemarket site must be viable, proportionate, sustainable and support the long term viability of the town, from an economic, social and environmental point of view. We are committed to maintaining an open mind as to how our aims can be achieved.

    MARY PORTAS

“There has been a lot of focus on town centres recently, including the Mary Portas Review of High Streets, dated December 2011, which has contributed to the localism debate and current government policy,” continued Jenny. “We would like to see the Cattlemarket site, which is publicly owned and the last major development opportunity in the centre of the town, contribute to and support the unique proposition that Thame offers, not only to local residents but also to people who come from outside town.

“CMAG will continue to consult its members and interested parties, who have to date, provided a wealth of detailed feedback on their community group needs and aspirations. Working together with both Thame Town Council and South Oxfordshire District Council, we believe that we can help make our fantastic town even better.”

The council voted to accept the Mayor’s Motion to request SODC to finance such an assessment.

  • 20/06/12…..Rain thwarts Thame’s cricketing momentum

THE game started well enough when Thame Town Cricket Club visited rural West Oxfordshire on Saturday (16/06) to take on Shipton, newly promoted into the Home Counties Division Two, West.

Asked to bat first in overcast conditions, Thame made a good start with Mike Higgs (26) and James Nielson (39) putting on 71 for the first wicket. The middle order had been changed by captain Mike Higgs, but they all found batting difficult against the spin of Miller, and at one stage Thame were 93 for 5. The innings had been rebuilt by Vandit Jivrajani and Sam Lachlan (23), who put on 45 to get the visitors up to a final score of 186, when Jivrajani was last out for 42. Miller ended up with figures of 7 for 44 off 21 overs.

Shipton having come into bat, were soon in trouble thanks to a fine spell by Will Rooney, returning to the team after unavailability last week. He removed three of the first four batsmen to leave Shipton 24 for 4. When Pratik Patel came on, Thame continued to dominate, and victory looked to be only a matter of time when the home side were 80 for 8 in the 33rd over. However, the weather decided to play a part and with a steady drizzle falling, the play was suspended with half an hour to go. But the players never got back out again, leaving Thame cursing their luck in a game they had controlled from the outset.

Will Rooney had figures of 3 for 15 off 10, and Pratik Patel 3 for 11 off 4.

THAME SECONDS recorded their first victory of the season against Banbury, scoring 225, with Will Sutcliffe hitting a polished 81. When Banbury batted, the Thame side restricted them to 131 all out, with Cian Davies taking 4 for 40.

THE THIRDS just lost a tight game against Dinton 3?s by one wicket, despite 68 from Guy Holmes. M Sheffield scored 58 for Dinton, with Waj Ali taking 3 for 37 and Will Hawthorne 3 for 42 for Thame.

THE SUNDAY XI won a good game away against Burnham. Batting first, Thame scored 232 off their 40 overs, with Adam Phippen hitting 76 and Tom de Haan scoring 43. Burnham were always behind the rate, and finished on 211 for 9 with Phippen taking 2 for 12 off 5 and Jivrajani 3 for 19 off 7.

  • 20/06/12…….Thame’s second twin town a step closer

THAME’S budding relationship with a town in Romania will soon be a formal twinning arrangement, when the Mayor of Thame signs a Twinning Charter.

Thame Town Council voted on Tuesday evening (19 June) to give permission to the Mayor, Nigel Champken Woods, to sign the Twinning Charter with the town of Sinaia in Romania.

Marius Ciortan, Secretary of Thame-Sinaia Friendship Association, said: “This is great news for the people and local groups of Thame. The Twinning with Sinaia will create opportunities for various local organisations and segments of the Thame population to establish new links and friendships. There will also be opportunities for Thame?s local groups and organisations to access EU funds for various people exchange projects with specific aims and objectives.”

    BACKGROUND

Marius explained: “In 2,007 a number of local residents approached the then Mayor to suggest that Thame should have links with an Eastern European country as well as with Western Europeans such as Montesson in France.

“I became involved through Thame Rotary. My wife Zoe and I suggested the Romanian town of Sinaia as a possible link, as it is a nice town and about the same size as Thame.”

An approach was made to the Mayor of Sinaia to see if they were interested in forming a link. Their enthusiasm for a link with the UK was immediate and a small delegation from Thame visited Sinaia in 2009, followed six months later by a visit from Sinaia to Thame.

The Sinaia Friendship Association was formed as a result of these visits in July 2010. TSFA currently has 13 full members and another 40 associate members and has been fundraising for the past years to enable them to offer hospitality to visitors from Sinaia.
