  • 29/06/12….Open gardens, walks and beer – What’s on in Haddenham?

RUBBISH & RECYCLING Aylesbury Recycling and Re-Use Centre (ARRC) is about to cease operations as their site at Hampden Hall has been sold for re-development. ARRC has been collecting aluminium foil and cans from many locations in the county since 2001, but all the collecting bins will be cleared for the last time by the end of June. Aluminium will continue to be collected by AVDC in the household kerbside collecting baskets and from the public bring banks. If you have small pieces of aluminium foil (eg milk-tops) please ensure they are wrapped in a larger piece of foil to help the sorting process.

HADDENHAM.NET June Jones, who founded the Haddenham website in the 1990s, has been trying for the past year or two to find a volunteer to take over the site. Recently retired Keith Milmer, who has moved back to Haddenham with his wife Lorraine, after several years of living elsewhere, announced at last month?s annual parish meeting that he had agreed to take on the site. He has been working hard on updating it for the past couple of months and the site is due to be re-launched on Sunday (July 1st). Do visit www.haddenham.net to see what you think of it.

GAS PIPES Villagers may be interested to know that the latest white and coloured markings in Townside and Southend are in connection with the gas supply. When the work is done this will, I understand, complete the final upgrading of the last of the ductile iron pipes in the village to plastic PE
    (polyethylene – no leaks) pipes.

Fri 29th/Sat 30th Youth Theatre Haddenham Youth Theatre Group is busy putting the final touches to their two forthcoming one act plays. The Junior Group is presenting ?Captain Blackboot?s Island? and the Senior Group is presenting ?The Secret of Madame Defarge? an unusual slant on Dickens’ classic novel a Tale of Two Cities.

The plays take place on Friday and Saturday at Haddenham Community Junior School, Woodways, (doors open at 6.30p.m.) and tickets (

MATCH REPORT (Contributed) Thame Town First X1 Vs Harefiled – June, 23, 2012: THAME Town hosted London side Harefield in Division Two, West of the Home Counties league on Saturday, hoping to build on their improving form.

After winning the toss, skipper Mike Higgs elected to bowl first. Harefield made a steady start, with their two best batsmen opening and seeing off the new ball in the first few overs. Sam Lachlan then dismissed Nkala and Harefield progressed to 97 for two at lunch, with Macey also dismissed for 60.

The visitors then faltered against accurate bowling, and when Will Rooney came back on, he captured four wickets to claim four for 51 off 14. Harefield were all out for 189 in the 59th over. Vandit Jivrajani also claimed four wickets for 44 off 19.

The Thame innings started well, despite the loss of Mike Higgs for one. James Nielson and Pratik Patel looked in total control until Nielson was caught in the over before tea, leaving Thame on 78 for three. After the break, Ed Barnett, Vandit Jivrajani and Pratik Patel continued the home side?s dominance, taking the score to 170, as the Harefield players began to wilt.

However a flurry of wickets, including a hat-trick for Harefield?s Doug King, left Thame counting down the runs. Manoj Parmar and Harry Desai saw them home in the 44th over, to give Thame a well deserved victory by two wickets.

THE Second team’s game at Horspath was curtailed by rain, despite 86 from Chris Jeffcock and three for 22 from George Patey, which put Thame in a winning position.

The Thirds gained a victory over Stokenchurch, with Guy Holmes scoring 67 as Thame overhauled the visitors 129 by four wickets.

  • 27/06/12…Please don’t block our market stalls !

MARKET traders on Thame’s long-established Tuesday market, are fed up with thoughtless, overnight parking in the Upper High Street, which frequently prevents them from erecting their stalls.

On Tuesday morning this week, a visitor to the town left a black Audi parked overnight right in the middle of the market. The shame-faced driver returned later in the morning and was guided out from among the stalls by traders. A second car, a green Peugeot 306, remained parked between the sweets and biscuit stall, and Thame’s WI produce stall, throughout the day.

Market Trader, Chris Hurdman, told ThameNews.Net: “Despite the signs everywhere warning people not to park overnight, this is a regular occurrence and we find it very frustrating. Sometimes, the stall holder just has to go home because his pitch is blocked and he can’t set up!”

Kevin Wall, another market trader, added: “This is an on-going problem and more often than not, it is locals who should know better.”

He explained: “Anyone who leaves their car parked in the Upper High Street overnight on Mondays, blocking the market, has to pay a fine and pay the equivalent of the Market Traders rent for the day.”

  • 26/06/12….Scaling the three peaks – in a wheel chair! (updated from a previous posting)

AS 2012 is an Olympic and Paralympic year, what better way to show the strength and courage of those spending a lifetime in a wheelchair than to conquer three mountains in less than 36 hours!!!

In June 2012 Nigel Pattison and his team, mostly made up of members of Racquets Fitness Centre, in Thame, will be encouraging and supporting Gaz Houston, also from Thame, up the Three highest peaks in the United Kingdom, to raise money for the Matt Hampson Foundation.

As an emerging talent in the world of rugby, Matt Hampson?s world was rocked by a serious spinal injury sustained while training with England U21s. The shock would last months, the impact forever. Paralysed from the neck down Matt faced the toughest challenge of his life. Drawing on the passion, grit and steely determination that defined him as a player, Matt saw his accident not as an end, but as a new beginning.

Through the Matt Hampson Foundation, Matt offers hope and inspiration to young people with similar injuries, sharing his experiences and devoting his life to raising vital funds for those in need of support.

Nobody knows the needs of these people better than Matt.

  • 26/06/12……Summer drink-driving warning after arrests

THAMES Valley Police fear that the message about the dangers of drug and drink driving is not getting through, following the arrest of 180 drivers since the beginning of a summer drink-drive campaign.

This year?s campaign arrests however, show a 16 per cent decrease on the 216 arrests made during the same period in 2011.

Of those arrested, 142 were men [78 per cent] and 40 were women [22 per cent]. In total, 104 of the 182 arrested have been charged, with 42 bailed and 36 released with no further action.

Superintendent Chris Brown, Head of Roads Policing for Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police, said: ?182 people arrested for drink driving shows the large number of people still willing to put themselves before everyone else’s safety.

?People still aren?t getting the message and yet we know drinking while over the limit is causing fatal collisions. We know that any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive and we know that if you?re caught drink-driving you will be banned from driving.

?We’ll continue to target drink drivers hard and get them before the courts whenever we can.?

The campaign, which runs until the end of June, will see police targeting individuals they suspect of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, both on the way home from nights out and the morning after a heavy night.

Of the arrests, 72 have been made in Berkshire, 59 in Buckinghamshire and 51 in Oxfordshire.

  • 26/06/12…Thame businessmen join the Scally Rally for sick children

WHY will four grown men from Thame be dressing up as Woody, Buzz, Evil Emperor Zurg and Stinky Pete, and getting into a rather ancient Saab convertible, decorated to resemble RC Racer from the film Toy Story?

Well, its all in a good cause, and their reputations are safe, because the group of Thame Businessmen will be taking part in this year’s Scally Rally, starting on Friday (29/06), to raise money for a leading children’s charity.

Team Ollie-RC RACER, as they are known, consists of Peter Butt, Stuart Groves, Tim Lancaster and Alun Rowe. Thame Round Tabler, Peter explained the inspiration behind their sponsored Scally Rally ride:

“When we heard that a friend’s child had been diagnosed with cancer, shortly before his second birthday, words simply felt inadequate. You wonder where the children and the families get the strength to fight this disease and you realise that the answer is simple- because they have no choice.

“We decided that we should try and bring some smiles to their days with the Toy Story theme, as well as raising money for the charity supporting them. Oliver Lee, the inspiration and drive for Team Ollie, has Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer affecting just 60 children a year. Oliver had a 5.5cm tumour on his bladder and secondary tumours on his lungs and pelvic bone, and had to be catheterised as he could not urinate due to the size of his tumour.

“At his scan in January 2012 all secondary tumours have gone and the primary is down to 1cm,” explains Peter.
“This has taken four rounds of Chemo, causing hair and skin loss, but this little boy keeps smiling!”
