  • 14/07/12…Possible parcels scam targets vulnerable people in Thame

POSSIBLE Scam – Unsolicited Parcels – Oxfordshire Trading Standards have received two calls from vulnerable adults living in Thame who have recently received expensive goods through the post that they have not ordered from a well-known mail order company.

On one occasion, the consumer received a telephone call from an unknown caller shortly after receiving the parcel to arrange for collection of the parcel from the consumer?s home. The consumer had not contacted anyone about the parcel ? this was an unsolicited call.

Soon afterwards a tall black male wearing a yellow hi-viz jacket arrived at the consumer?s home and collected the parcel, no receipt was provided.

Both consumers are now being pursued by the mail order company for payment of the items.

We are asking residents living in the South Oxfordshire or Vale of White Horse area who experience this kind of behaviour to telephone Thames Valley Police on 101 and quote URN 706 of 13/07/12.

  • 11/07/12….Weather too wet for Thame’s ducks – again!

IN a summer which has been even more British than usual, an early casualty of the usually bad weather was the Thame and District Round Table annual duck race. Originally scheduled for the Thame Carnival weekend in June, extensive flooding of the course forced a postponement until this weekend.

Unbelievably though, the wettest June on record has given way to an equally poor start to July and with an official flood alert in force for the River Thame this week, the Table have had no choice but to push the date back once again, to 9th September. This is the last date the race can take place this year, before Thame’s resident population of 2,500 rubber ducks flies south for the winter.

Iain Biddle, Chairman of Thame and District Round Table, said: “We really can’t believe this, but we hope that by abandoning summer entirely and going for a date in Autumn, the weather and the water levels will be in a state where the Town can enjoy the race in safety.”

  • 08/07/12…Thame pupils drumming up excitement for The Peacemakers

LORD Williams?s Festival Chorus will be the first amateur choir to perform Karl Jenkins? new work, The Peacemakers at their summer concert in Thame on Saturday (July 14) and pupils from Lord Williams?s School will be drumming up the excitement.

The choir is invariably amongst the first to perform Karl?s new compositions, as their musical director, John Gibbons works closely with the composer. For this performance, the Ealing Symphony Orchestra is being joined by the exciting multi-percussionist Zands Duggan, who played the work with Karl at its Welsh premiere in May. Choir chair, Claire Humphries, said: “Zands has been coaching pupils at Lord Williams?s School to play the percussion parts on Saturday, so tickets for the event are selling fast – helped by the fact that the CD of The Peacemakers went into the Classical Charts at number one and is still at the top after 14 weeks. It just shows how exciting Karl Jenkins? music is.”

The soprano part will be sung by the sublime Russian singer, Anna Gorbachyova, who has now made several guest appearances with the choir to great acclaim. Also on the programme will be Sammartini?s Recorder concerto in F, played by recorder virtuoso Alison Baldwin, and Warlock?s popular Capriol Suite for Strings.

The concert will take place at 7.30pm at Thame Leisure Centre. Tickets cost

  • 06/07/12…..What a spectacle ! Mayor rewards Jubilee window winner

THE Mayor of Thame, Nigel Champken Woods, today presented a Certificate to the shop with the best Jubilee window display.

And the winner is…..Robert Stanley Opticians in the High Street! Their display of pictures of Her Majesty The Queen throughout the span of her reign – appropriately wearing specs in many of them – attracted a lot of attention throughout the run up to the jubilee weekend and the following week. The town’s guests from Montesson, Thame’s twin town, were seen admiring the display and taking pictures of it with their mobile phones when they came over the weekend before the Bank holiday. The magnificent crown in the window of the Cottage Bakery too attracted a lot of attention and admiration.

Nigel himself was in no doubt of the stand-out winner. As he walked round the town choosing the winner with Sonja Francis, Chair of Thame4Business who jointly sponsored the competition with the council, he commented: “I think Robert Stanley?s is a deserved winner because someone had put a lot of thought into the window display and not just filled the window with red white and blue, which is great in itself but just a bit more flair went into this one.

“The display took the Queen through all seven decades of her reign from the 50?s to the present day. It was subtle and clever. I think a little bit of licence was used on the photo of HRH and her two corgis with crowns on! Photo-shop perhaps!”
