22/10/12….No walk-over as Thame beat bottom tablers, Rotherfield
OXFORDSHIRE Senior Cup – 1st round – 20/10/12; Rotherfield United 0, Thame United 2 – MATCH REPORT:
Thame United travelled to Rotherfield, near Reading, on Saturday (20/10) where they progressed to the next round of the Oxford Senior Cup, by defeating Rotherfield United 0-2. Recently Thame supporters have become used to the team recording good results against sides at a similar level. Rotherfield however are bottom of the Senior Division of the Reading Football League, having lost all of their seven league fixtures this season. The visitors therefore should have had a comfortable win, but in this lacklustre game, Thame struggled to penetrate Rotherfield?s 10-man defence.
Several regulars where missing due to injury, whilst Nik Rhodes and Dan West were ?on the bench?.
Thame had the bulk of possession with 70% of the game being played in their opponents half. They took the lead after 15 minutes when Luke Rickets hit a low cross from the left and, after a scramble, Niall Hodgkins, forced the ball over the line. There were few Thame chances in the remainder of the half, whilst goalkeeper Lee Farrow was mainly a spectator, not making a single save.
The first part of the second half was similar but then the home manager switched formation to play with two strikers and, the game became more open. Farrow was more involved, and dealt well with the occasional goal-bound shot. Thame, on the other hand seemed unable to find the target, with numerous blocked shots and near misses. Thame?s second goal came seven minutes before the end when Ben Connelly made a run on the right, beat his marker, and hit a cross from the by-line which hit a defender?s chest to rebound into the goal.
With three minutes remaining Chairman, Jake Collinge, who is sometimes on the away sub?s bench but is rarely used, came on. He soon saw action and had a goal-bound shot saved when he got on the end of a low pass from the tricky Connelly.
Thame United: Farrow, Barr, P Pykett, Johnson, Hercules, Jewell, Connelly, Rogers, Hodgkins, Gray (Collinge), Ricketts.
United are away at Holyport next Saturday 27th. Their next home game is on Saturday 3rd November when a League Cup game brings Newbury to the ASM stadium for the third time this season.

22/10/12…..Another recycling award for Thame area
Residents in South Oxfordshire and in the Vale and have been congratulated on their excellent recycling yet again.
The Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire District Councils scooped the Best Improved Recycling Rates prize at the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Celebration Awards 2012. The two councils share a waste contract with Biffa and were also named as the top two recycling areas in the country in a survey carried out by letsrecycle.com.
The service was launched in South Oxfordshire in 2009, since when the rates have increased from 42% per cent to approximately 70 per cent.
Since the launch of its current waste and recycling service in July 2010, recycling rates in the Vale have increased dramatically from around 36 per cent to just under 70 per cent as well.
The judges at the LARAC awards described the recycling figures as: ?phenomenal.”
The councils also won a silver award for Transformation in Waste and Environment at the IE Awards 2012. When the service was launched, it was supported by a communications campaign that won the Best Green Direct Mail Award at the International Green Awards in 2009.
Cllr David Dodds, cabinet member for waste at South Oxfordshire, and a Thame Town Cllr, said: ?Operating a shared service with the Vale saves us huge sums of money and the more our residents recycle the more money we save in avoided landfill tax. Once again we would like to thank our residents for their ongoing commitment to making the recycling service such a success.?
Recently, the councils introduced a battery recycling service as well as installing bring banks for small electrical items at their many recycling points across southern Oxfordshire.
The councils also have a smartphone app called Binfo that reminds residents of their collection dates and if there are changes to the service due to bank holidays or adverse weather.
Further information on Binfo can be found at: www.whitehorsedc.gov.uk/binfo
The LARAC Celebration awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 17, at Chesford Grange in Kenilworth.

21/10/12….Waymarkers point the way to Thame’s history
THAME’s MP, and the town’s Mayor, today helped launch a scheme to make discovering the town’s rich history easier and more fun for locals and visitors alike.
A town-wide series of numbered brass, disc-shaped Waymarkers has been sunk into pavements around Thame which, used in conjunction with an Historic Walk leaflet, points to a particular historic building or feature as the route is followed.
John Howell MP and the Mayor, Nigel Champken Woods, were accompanied by their wives, members of 21st Century Thame who initiated the scheme, Town Councillors, and a group of visitors – two of whom were staying in the area from Acton in West London and were exploring the town on foot.
Also in the walking party accompanying the dignitaries was a new resident keen to learn more about her new home town, as well as another woman, a regular visitor to Thame, researching her family history in the area.
Fortunately the weather stayed dry for this inaugural walk and the party finished at the Stables, behind The James Figg pub for hot soup and roast meat rolls.

19/10/12…..Thame Cinema TONIGHT – Nostalgia for the Light
THAME Cinema, usually open on a Saturday evening, will be showing the Chilean documentary ‘Nostalgia for the Light’ described as ‘A film of heart-stopping beauty and devastating horror.”
You wouldn?t imagine the two could co-exist, but Patricio Guzman?s film shows us a place where they do ? in Chile?s Atacama Desert. This deeply intelligent film of extraordinary beauty and tragic grandeur, in its desolate way as breathtaking as any BBC nature series.
See it on the big screen, and you get the full benefit of the vast blue skies over Atacama?s red sand and rock, shot with gorgeous contemplative clarity by Katell Djian. Nostalgia for the Light does something that, in the era of CGI space operas, you?d think impossible: it restores a cosmic dimension to cinema. But this profound and moving work also reminds us that part of the cosmic is the history of humanity ? politics, slaughter and all. From Jonathan Romney in The Independent
Patricio Guzman travels 10,000 feet above sea level into Chile?s Attacama Dessert. Here the sky is so translucent that it allows astronomers to see the boundaries of our universe. Yet the dry dessert climate also preserves the human remains intact: pre-Columbian mummies; explorers and miners; and the remains of the ?disappeared from the Pinochet regime. Women sift the dessert soil for the bones of their loved ones, while archaeologists uncover traces of ancient civilisations and astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies. Nostalgia for the Light is a gorgeous, deeply moving and personal odyssey into astronomy, archaeology, geology and human rights.
Run time 90 minutes. Certificate 12a – Film starts at 8pm and doors open 30 minutes before each film. Admission is
