  • 08/12/12 …..’Amazing’ escape as car rcrashes off M40

FIRE Crews from thame were called this morning at 9 am to reports of a car that had come off the M40 and crashed into a field. Fire crews responded quickly from Thame, Wheatley and Kidlington and on arrival discovered the car that had been involved in a crash between junctions 7 and 6 of the M40 southbound.

Luckily the only occupant of the car was able to get free from the car and was treated by the Ambulance Service. Fire crews then worked with the Police, Highways Agency and Ambulance to make the vehicles safe.

Watch Manager Andy Ford from Thame fire station said: “The driver was so lucky this time; a car rolling over like this through a fence and landing in a field and the occupant being able to walk out is pretty amazing.”

Station Manager Simon Belcher said: “We?d like to remind all drivers that the conditions are only going to get worse over the next few days with freezing temperatures, fog and potentially snow predicted, please take care and leave enough room between you and the next car. At this time of year the sun can be very low in the sky for a great deal of the day making visibility poor.”

  • 07/12/12…..How to avoid the Christmas Debt Trap

CHRISTMAS is a time of giving, but you don?t want to give yourself a New Year debt hangover with credit card bills and loans you can?t afford. So says Thame’s Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

Their top tips can help you stay out of the red and in control of your spending:

Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you are going to spend on each person ? and stick to it.

Remember that rent, the mortgage, utility bills, food bills and other existing debts still have to be paid ? and the consequences can be severe if they?re not. Even though it?s Christmas, get your priorities right.

If you do need more money, don?t just run up an overdraft without talking to your bank first ? it will work out much more expensive.

    If you do need more

If you can afford to pay for your goods outright by cash, cheque, or debit card, don?t be persuaded to take out extended credit agreements unless they really do work out cheaper.

Shop around for the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need.

Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don?t buy from unauthorised traders and don?t borrow from unauthorised lenders.

Check for hidden extras in any credit agreement. Work out the total amount payable and ensure that the monthly instalments are within your budget before signing.

If you?ve borrowed money don?t forget that it won?t be long before you have to make a payment. Make sure you pay on time, even if it?s only the minimum, or you will be faced with additional charges. Put the payment dates in your diary.

  • 07/12/12….Chinnor-based author wins motoring writers’ award

CHINNOR-based author, Ian Wagstaff has won the Mercedes-Benz award for the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy for the second time. At the Guild of Motoring Writers? Annual Dinner in the RAC, Pall Mall, last night, Ian was presented with this prestigious prize for his biography of former Grand Prix mechanic, Tony Robinson.

Tony was one of the foremost racing mechanics of the 1950s and 1960s. He worked for Stirling Moss ? who described him as ?an important contribution to my racing successes? – and eventually designed cars for Formula One and the Indianapolis 500.

Ian, who first won the Montagu Trophy in 2006 for his book, ?The British at Le Mans?, is now working on a series of books for Haynes Publishing ? best known for its owner?s workshop manuals ? about famous racing cars. The first of these, on the iconic Lotus 72 of the early 1970s, was published earlier this year and he is now writing one on the McLaren M23. This was the car that took James Hunt to the World Championship in 1976, a season that will be the subject of the eagerly awaited feature film, Rush!, scheduled for launch next season.

The Montagu Trophy is awarded to the member of the Guild of Motoring Writers who has made the ?greatest contribution to recording, in the English language, the history of motoring? during the year. Ian?s 2012 winning book, Tony Robinson ? the biography of a race mechanic, is published by Veloce.
