  • 30/01/13…..Two new town councillors for Thame

THAME now has two new town councillors, following the co-option yesterday (29/01) of Adrian Dite and Linda Emery, by a ballot of Thame Town Councillors. The two new councillors will serve until the end of the current term, to May 2015.

Adrian Dite is semi-retired and has lived in the Thame area since 1980, and his children attended local schools. Previously he spent six years on Ickford Parish Council. He is particularly interested in supporting the High Street area and ?keeping the town alive.? He lists his strengths as events, sports and leisure management.

Linda Emery?s grandmother lived in Chinnor and she therefore knew Thame from childhood. Linda has lived in Thame since 2009 and has worked in business since 1991. She is a member of Thame Rotary Club where she is actively involved in fundraising and also a member of the Thame Twinning Committee.

  • 30/01/13…..It’s a musical Thame Carnival 2013

GET YOUR DANCING SHOES ON, LET YOUR HAIR DOWN AND LETS PARTY! That’s the message from the team behind this year’s Thame Carnival, due to be held on June 15, 2013.

Carnival team spokesperson, Mark Green, said: “We would love for as many local businesses, schools and groups to take part in whatever way they can. Whether it is a full float, a walking parade, a stall at the fete, an advertisement in our brochure or taking part in one the many events taking place in the arena, we would welcome your participation.

“Please remember all money raised is partly used to stage next year’s carnival and the sum left over goes to Thame community good causes.”

Over the last two years, due to its enormous success, the carnival has raised sufficient funds to donate

  • 29/01/13….New Thame supermarket decision expected in March

A controversial plan for a large supermarket and community facility on Thame’s Cattlemarket site is expected to be considered by South Oxfordshire District Council’s Planning committee in March.

In a letter dated January 14, sent out to Thame residents addressed as ‘supporters’ encouraging them to take part in SODC’s consultation on the Thame Neighbourhood plan, Sainsbury’s stated that they expected the application to be presented to the district council for consideration as early as February.

However, Michael Moore, Major Applications Officer at SODC, told ThameNews.Net today: “Discussions between Sainsbury’s and SODC Planning Officers have been going on for some time about various technical aspects of the plan.

“The application is unlikely to be on the Planning committee Agenda for February but will probably be on that of March 13, if matters regarding an **Archaeological survey which Sainsbury’s say they are carrying out, have been sorted. At the moment I am not in a position to make a recommendation because I do have sufficient information to do so.

“There is also a question of Air quality to be resolved with the Highways authority.”

Mr Moore added: “The Thame Neighbourhood Plan is absolutely fundamental to any application. Thame has been given ‘front runner’ status by the Government in formulating its plan (Ed.under the Localism Bill) and it would be plain wrong to approve any proposal that ran counter that plan.”

Sainsbury’s plan for a supermarket and community centre was turned down unanimously by Thame Town Council last year, and the company’s evidence of the retail impact of their proposal was re-examined by an independent agency at the request of the Planning authority.

Sainsbury’s itself has stated that: “A new, larger Sainsbury?s store, in the town centre, would provide more choice locally and could act as an anchor to keep shoppers in Thame, to the benefit of the wider town centre.”

The operators of the Cattle Market own a lease on the existing site and believe that relocating the cattlemarket: “would secure the future of the Cattle Market in Thame.” Other supporters of the scheme have said that relocating to the Showground would also help to secure the future of Oxfordshire County and Thame Show which has suffered financially in recent years, often due to bad weather.

***NB A manor House, called Place House, which was once the seat of manorial power at Thame, once stood on the site of the Cattlemarket.

  • 29/01/13…..Thame business celebrates with ‘Brotherly’ love !

DESPITE much ‘doom and gloom’ about the future of our High Street, Thame continues to be a good place to do business if you’re an independent, as was born out this week when a local hair salon brought all its branches’ staff together in the town.

Brothers Hair Salon in the Buttermarket, recently celebrated its 18th birthday and to mark the occasion, brought the staff from its three salons together from Thame, Oxford and Marlow (opened just six months ago) for a team building and training day at the Town Hall in Thame.

Salon owner, Adam Buckland, an ex Mayor of Thame, said: “As you can see from the photograph, our team has grown over the years and has gone from strength to strength, and now we employ around 50 people! (not everyone could attend the day)

“Now we have ‘Come of age,’ we are really looking forward to the next 18 years and are going to focus on producing our own photographic work and continuing our charity work in the local community.”

  • 29/01/13…..Thame ‘mumpreneur’ & friends join’ the hand-made revolution’

A Thame ‘Mumpreneur’ who makes soft-furnishings has joined forces with two other talented, local ladies and embarked on a new venture to set up a sewing school.

Emma May set up her business, Emma May Stitching, at home after giving up her job in science when her son was born, Utilising her sewing skills to make soft furnishings.

Having established her business, Emma is now collaborating with two other talented women, Thame designer, Sam Osborne and Nicola Rutterford, the brains behind Oxfordshire-based on-line fabric retailer, The Fabric Loft to launch the Simple Pleasures Sewing School.

Emma explained: “The School aims to inspire a new generation of sewers to join the current recession inspired ‘hand-made revolution’. We allow people to try their hand at sewing before committing to an expensive sewing machine purchase, or get them up and running on their own machine if they’ve been too scared to get it out of the box. All sewing will be done with the accompaniment of plenty of tea and cake.

“The School is mobile and will reach people via workshops, parties, events and one-to-one tuition and will be launching with a number of Workshops at the beautiful Thame Barns Centre over the coming weeks.”

  • 29/01/13……..Chinnor Colts well beaten by Chippenham

The Chinnor Colts’ involvement in the National Plate ended on Sunday (27) with defeat to Chippenham. The score line clearly reflected Chippenham’s superiority, in the back division in particular.

Chinnor RFC’s Carol Bradbrook-Taylor reflected on the match: “The score was hard on our lads and did not reflect the effort they had put in for which they richly deserved some consolation, at least on the scoreboard. However, we suffered from the season-long problem of lack of numbers at the Under 18s, meaning that once again we had players out of position, with injuries sustained during the game limiting our options still further.

“But we can be pleased that we competed well in the forwards and our tackle count was phenomenal. Grosse, Evans, O?Connor, Barker, Carter and others put their bodies on the line, and Carter took one for the team with a gritty performance in the front-row, but our attacking opportunities were limited and ultimately came to nothing.

“On this occasion our heads didn’t drop and we kept going manfully to the end but on the day lost to a better team.”

  • 24/01/13……What to do if your waste still not collected in Thame

WHILST Waste collections have now resumed in Thame and the rest of South Oxfordshire, crews have been struggling to access some residential areas on untreated roads, especially where there is an incline.

The advice is, if your bin has not been emptied within three days of your original collection day, take it back in and it will be emptied on your next scheduled day for that kind of waste.

If this is your situation, Biffa will collect any excess waste that doesn’t fit in the bin if you leave it out in a separate bag or container next to the appropriate bin.
