  • 04/04/13…No ‘giant killing’ dream for Thame Utd

OXFORDSHIRE Senior Cup – Semi Final: Thame United 0, Oxford City 5 – Played: 3/04/13: IN their 130 year history, Thame United have won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup several times, the most recent being in 2002. They met Oxford City at the ASM Stadium on Wednesday evening in the semi final of this season?s competition and conceded five goals to a team which plays its football three leagues higher than Thame.

Any thoughts of a giant killing were dispelled after the first few minutes when it became apparent that City were by far the stronger side. Despite this, Thame can be proud of their gutsy performance as heads did not drop, and they continued to fight to the final whistle.

City?s first goal came on eight minutes when Nick Stanley volleyed home from 10 yards. It was 0-2 in the 21st minute when the talented Felipoe Barcelos lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Lee Farrow?s head. It was not all one-way-traffic but United attacks were closed down quickly and their efforts on goal were either too close to the on-form goalkeeper or wide of the target. It was 2-0 at the break.

Three minutes after the restart Barcelos struck again when he hit a wayward Thame clearance into the corner of the goal from 15-yards to make it 0-3. Mark Bell scored the final two goals with well placed 15-yard shots, the first on 72 minutes, and the second in the 84th minute. The United players should not be disheartened by the result. They gave it all they had and their supporters cannot ask for more, but in the end it was a case of amateurs being outclassed by professionals.

  • 04/04/13….Chinnor’s young rugby talent moves on up

FOUR of Chinnor RFU’s young players have progressed from Oxfordshire?s County Team to South West trials. They are Leo Fielding, George Blewitt, Jack Horwood and Will Millett.

George, Jack and Will have played for Chinnor through the youth section, and Leo joined the 1st XV when he started at Oxford Brookes University.

Will Millett was the only young player from Oxfordshire to get into the South West under 20s team, and to then go on to the England trials for the under 20s counties team.

Over the weekend, during the first session of the festival for the selection for the England team to go to Georgia, he sadly found himself with a really bad dead leg and was unable to participate further in the weekend.

Everyone at Chinnor RFC is hopeful that next year Will can go all the way.

  • 04/04/13…..Pressure on to reduce strokes – FREE blood pressure checks

TO mark ten years of stroke prevention by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI), the two Rotary clubs of Thame and Haddenham & District are hosting a free, Know Your Blood Pressure event at The Co-operative Supermarket, High Street, Thame on April 27. 2013.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the link between blood pressure and stroke. Measuring blood pressure is quick, simple and painless; it is done with an inflatable cuff put on your arm. The NHS recommends that all adults have their blood pressure checked at least every five years.

Bob Livings and John Corowle, the two Presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Thame and of Haddenham & District, said: ?The ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ events have helped prevent thousands of strokes over the last ten years. Learning your blood pressure is high can be worrying, but these events will give you advice on the simple steps you can take to keep it under control. Healthy eating, stopping smoking and taking regular exercise will all make a difference and reduce your risk.?

For more information on stroke, call the Stroke Association helpline on 0303 3033 100 or visit

Jon Barrick, Chief Executive of the Stroke Association said; ?Stroke is one of the UK?s biggest killers and leading cause of adult disability, but far too many people don?t understand it or ever think it?ll happen to them. Rotary have been a fantastic partner in hosting these events which play a vital role in preventing stroke and letting people know their level of risk so they can take action before it?s too late. Everyone should have their blood pressure tested at Know Your Blood Pressure events?
    www.stroke.org.uk/kybp

Over the last decade an estimated 200,000 people have had their blood pressure checked at Know Your Blood Pressure events hosted by Rotary with the Stroke Association. Over 30,000 people were tested in 2012; this year the hope is to reach even more as 40% of strokes could be prevented if undiagnosed high blood pressure was identified and treated.

There are 152,000 strokes in the UK every year, which works out at one every five minutes. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor contributing to stroke, but it has no symptoms and can affect people of any age. 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure yet many of them don?t know it. If left untreated, it can increase your risk of having a stroke.

FUNDING for refurbishment and additional equipment at Thame Skate Park, is to be sought by the town council, including looking into the criteria for South Oxfordshire District Council?s Community Investment Fund. • Introducing: The Vibe at First Thursday Music Club

Tanya_VibeTHE First Thursday Music Club in Thame is all about giving musicians the opportunity to play live in front of a large appreciative audience ? whilst giving the audience a free night out and the chance to hear a whole host of different acts playing a very wide range of music.

An equally important aspect is the informal alliances and jams that are created where musicians sit in on stage to back up other artists ? often when they may have only just met. Sometimes the magic happens!

Tanya Brewster has appeared at FTMC a number of times and sung her brand of soulful ballads and funky ‘toons’. Last month she took to the stage with some ‘friends’ made up of regular FTMC attendee musicians – and produced an absolutely stunning set! As a result, the band has been invited back to take the 10 o? clock feature spot at The Stables behind The James Figg on Thursday, April 4.

With Tanya on vocals, Kev (Rolex) Lucas on lead guitar, Chris (Cool man) Corfe on bass and Phil (Banger) Heard on percussion, the newly formed ‘The Vibe?’ are really not to be missed.

The First Thursday Music Club is Thame?s biggest monthly music event and is held at The Stables at the James Figg. Anyone can play just by signing up at the venue from 7.45pm.

Check out the club on Facebook ?The First Thursday Music Club? or at www.firstthursdaymusicclub.com where you can find more info, including contact numbers and addresses for the organisers.

  • Accreditation for Thame Museum

THAME Museum has received new, official Museum Accreditation from the Arts Council, which ensures high standards of managing collections effectively for the enjoyment and benefit of its users.

Reporting to Thame Town Council, Cllr David Laver said that the coming year was going to be a challenging one for the Trustees to keep the museum warm and to maintain high visitor numbers after a particularly good ?high? when hundreds of visitors came to see the special Robin Gibb exhibition last year.

?We are currently working on new areas in the museum, its collections and documents,” he added, “But we are always in need of more help from the town.?

The Museum, which is situated in the old Thame Magistrates Court buidling, has just undergone an annual inspection by the town council which found that window frames were in urgent need of repair and that there are signs of damp in the main exhibition room – all works that the museum aims to attend to during the next year.

  • 03/04/13…How businesses & organisations could save lives

OXFORDSHIRE’S local ambulance service is urging all businesses and organisation who are more than five minutes away from medical treatment to install a simple piece of equipment that could save lives.

In the last three months South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) has helped 35 businesses and organisations across the South Central Region to help to potentially save a life by inspiring them to install an automated Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) at their premises. What?s more a further 44 businesses and organisations have already pledged to install one in April, 2013.

In the UK approximately 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital and are treated by emergency medical services every year. A patient?s chance of survival decreases by around 10% per minute following a Cardiac Arrest. As such it is vital that emergency medical treatment begins as soon as possible.

If defibrillation is delivered promptly, survival rates as 75% can be achieved. The UK Resuscitation Council suggests an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be available wherever medical treatment is more than five minutes away.

SCAS recommends that a PAD be installed by amongst others, activity centres, bus stations, art centres, charitable trusts, churches, cinemas, community centres, corporate businesses, medical centres, equestrian centres, football clubs, garden centres, golf clubs, health and fitness clubs, hotels, museums, nursing or care homes, parish councils, post offices, public houses, residents associations, restaurants, schools and colleges, shopping centres, service stations, sports and social clubs, supermarkets, railway stations, village associations and volunteer groups.

The cost of a PAD including a secure box is
