  • Thame take the double over rivals Holyport

THAME  United travelled to Holyport‘s, Maidenhead based ground on Saturday, (02/11/13) where they secured the double over their opponents by winning 1-4.

The game was played in a strong wind which assisted the home side in the first half and Thame after the break. Shannon Jesson, who has recently signed from Ascot, was in Thame’s starting line up. Sadly the game was marred by a referee who blew his whistle at the least provocation and did not allow the game to flow.

After an even start, Thame found themselves on the back foot and were penned into their own half for a while. Holyport’s only goal came on 15 minutes when Thame failed to clear a ball ‘over the top’ and striker Jamie West headed home. The visitors were on level terms again five minutes later when Ian Pykett made a run on the right and hit a cross slightly behind Louis Cordice who, with his back to goal, met it with a spectacular scissors kick giving the home keeper no chance. It was the goal of the game and probably United’s best of the season so far.

The home side went down to 10 men a few minutes later when Ben Connolly was unfairly brought down by Dan Sharp. After the referee awarded a free kick, Sharp stupidly kicked the ball at Connelly whilst he was down, and the referee dismissed him from the pitch. United’s second goal came on 30 minutes when Cordice took a free kick, hitting a 30-yard shot which the keeper stopped, but spilled, allowing Luke Ricketts to react quickly and fire home from five yards.

It was 1-3 a few minutes after the restart when Connolly fed a forward ball to Niall Hodgkins whose clever shot, went over the keepers head. It was Holyport’s turn to be penned into their own half and Thame had several more chances. United’s final goal came with about 10 minutes remaining when Ollie Lynch played a telling ball to substitute Martin Griggs who confidently hit a well placed 20-yard shot pass the home keeper. Game over!

  • Food Bank topped up with Food Festival donations

ATTRACTING  thousands of visitors to the Thame Food Festival this year also enabled a group of local service organisations to raise just under £2,400 for local charities.
A proportion of the money raised will be going to the Thame Food Bank, operated by the Sharing Life Trust.  This year the Thame Food Bank has seen a rapid rise in the number of families needing assistance in putting food on the table.

Much preparation was needed before traders and crowds poured in to Thame to enjoy the good fare on offer at this year’s Thame Food Festival.

“Organising parking is a critical element to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and people to the event,” said Roger Blackburn, President of The Lions Club in Thame. A number of local organisations pulled together to deliver this logistical feat, with the food festival organisers, the Lions and Rotary clubs, the Thame Boys Football Team and Cornerstone Baptist Church were all involved in setting up and manning car parks, including the Park and Ride.

Rob Ellis, who is a member of both the Lions Club and Cornerstone Baptist Church, was enthusiastic about the way the organisations worked together. “Once again we were able to work together to achieve something that alone would be difficult. As a result a considerable amount of money was raised for charities through volunteer work and the tombola.”

A special presentation evening is being planned to take place at Thame Football Club on November 12, to distribute cheques to the Thame Food Bank and several other local charities. Radio presenter, Ken Bruce, who has associations with one of the charities, Thomley Activity Centre, will be there too.

The organisations to be presented with donations include Thomley Activity Centre, Thame and District Lions Club, Thame Rotary Club, Thame Football Partnership and Cornerstone Baptist Church.

  • Loan will help deliver more social housing

THE local housing association, Soha, is well on the way to helping those 1,450 people on the waiting list for homes in the district, following a ground-breaking deal with the district council.

South Oxfordshire District Council has loaned £15 million of its reserves to Soha Housing for 20 years, which will be secured on some of Soha’s properties. The loan means that Soha can borrow the money at a cheaper rate than it could a from a bank or elsewhere.

Soha are the biggest social housing provider in South Oxfordshire, owning and managing around 5,800 properties.

This loan will help fund Soha’s current development programme, which currently delivers around 250 much needed affordable new homes a year. The terms of the loan mean that at least 75% of the homes must be in South Oxfordshire and the rest within 10 miles of the district.

Whether or not the loan money will help fund affordable new homes in future developments planned for Thame, is not yet clear.  Richard Peacock, Chief Executive of Soha, was unavailable for comment later this afternoon.

  • Road deaths to be commemorated at special service in Thame

PEOPLE who have lost family members and friends in road collisions in the Thames Valley will have the opportunity to commemorate their lives at a multi-faith service at St Mary’s Church, in Thame, this month.

The service, organised by Thames Valley Police, will be held on Sunday, November 17,  at St Mary the Virgin Church in Thame at 3pm.

The memorial service is an opportunity for the emergency services to come together with members of the public who have lost loved ones, to remember those that have died on the region’s roads, or in road collisions elsewhere.

Police officers, fire and rescue workers, paramedics, ambulance technicians and hospital staff will give readings and prayers from different religions during the service. Family members will be invited to take part in an act of commemoration during the service.

The service will be led by David Wilbraham, Force Chaplain of Thames Valley Police. The Bishop of Dorchester, The Right Reverend Colin Fletcher, will lead the Act of Commemoration.

Chief Constable Sara Thornton said: “The Road Death Memorial Service is always very moving but I know that it also provides a great comfort for those family and friends who have lost loved ones in road traffic collisions.

“We have always held the service in Thame Parish Church, which is a lovely old and peaceful building where the bereaved can spend some special time treasuring memories and finding the strength to move forward. The service brings together all the emergency services and many families from across the area and it is our way in the Thames Valley of marking the United Nations Day of Remembrance.”

Supt Chris Brown, head of Roads Policing, said: “The Road Death Memorial Service is held on the third Sunday of November each year in recognition of the tragic loss of life on our roads as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

“In 2012 (Jan – Dec), 78 people were killed on the roads of Thames Valley and the effect of these collisions is felt by many hundreds of people. We aim to offer support to the families of those who have been killed and we organise this service to mark this very important day.”

Force Chaplain, David Wilbraham, said: “The third Sunday of November is set aside by the United Nations as a special day of remembrance for victims of road death.

“However, while clearly a global issue, the death of someone on the roads is intensely personal and impacts greatly on their families and friends. This service provides a safe, supportive place for those affected to come together to remember and commemorate their individual loss.

“For some, this service has become an annual event; we welcome them and extend the invitation to others whose lives have been affected by death on the roads to join us.”

This is the eighth year that the service has taken place, and it is believed to be the only service of its kind in the UK organised by a police force.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event, and can reserve a space by contacting Elizabeth Richardson on 01189 231802 or, alternatively, email RDMS@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk

  • Disruption to buses as emergency work begins in Aylesbury Road

280 bus stops outside Thame Town Hall

THE ARRIVA bus company has warned today that considerable disruption to local bus routes is likely from tomorrow (01/11/13) due to emergency road works.

The Aylesbury Road, Thame,  will be closed from 07 30 hrs,  November 1,  until further notice due to a collapsed sewer.  Buses 110, 111, 112, 113 and 280 will be diverted away from the closure and so bus stops at Queens Close and Cricket Ground will not be served during this time. This is likely to add more journey time to the bus services and possible disruption to these services.

Services 280 and 110 will need to divert away from the closure by using Thame by-pass and then double running into Thame via Oxford Road, Priestend and High Street, then turning via Bell Lane and North Street to pick up as usual at the Co-op going towards Oxford; or coming from Oxford via normal route to Town Hall and then via North Street, Bell Lane and High Street, Priestend, Oxford Road and Thame by-pass.
