  • Winning designs for Towersey T-shirts

PUPILS from two local primary schools have impressed the organisers of the Towersey Festival with their winning designs in a competition to design new T-shirts for the festival.

    combined_T-shirt_designs_Towersey

The famed annual Oxfordshire music event challenged nearby schools to create colourful and creative designs inspired by the 51 year-old festival’s rich heritage. Over 100 pupils responded to the call-out with the two winning entries coming from pupils from John Hampden School, Thame, and Aston Rowant primary school.

“We were blown away by the quality of all the entries,” said Towersey Festival Director Joe Heap. “Picking just two winners was a tough task as they were all so imaginative!”

seans_choice_crendon_bedsThe two winning designs have been turned into T- shirts, available from the festival, which is headlined by Joan Armatrading and Bellowhead, and takes places at Thame Showground from Friday, August 28 to Monday, August 31. Profits from sales of the stylish garments will go directly to the individual schools.

Also, all the entries will be laminated and displayed in the festival’s showground area for all to see.

Independent Mortgae Solutions (RGB) - R1Tickets to the showground area of the festival at Thame Showground, Kingsey Rd, Thame, Oxfordshire OX9 3JL , which includes access to a variety of family-friendly workshops and performances, plus Marketplace stalls, gourmet street food and much more, cost just £8/£9 (adult) and £4 (child) for the day (10am-6pm) with under 5’s and car parking free.

  • ‘Conditions to Site F plans proves the site’s imperfections’

Dear Editor, The approval for 203 dwellings on site F was a foregone conclusion and inevitable. It would however have been more democratic for the application for such a large site, to be agreed by the planning committee rather than the planning officers at SODC.

I believe this came as a surprise to some of the town councillors. Nevertheless looking at the broader picture, 203 is much more preferable than the 600 originally planned for this site five years-ago, and is in accord with the Thame Neighbourhood Plan. We are conscious that it is most likely that another 78 will be built there as it seems Lord Williams’s School will not be in a position to unite the two schools in the allotted time period.

The fact that SODC has applied no less than 30 conditions shows the imperfections of the site. Residents’ concerns have largely been dismissed with regard to the location of the allotments and the access into, and moreover, out of the site. It also remains to be seen whether the SUDS proposals will eliminate the flood risks. Our major concern has always been over the sewerage. This is covered by the Grampian style condition whereby Bloor Homes have to make payment to Thames Water to upgrade the inadequate sewerage drainage.

However, we believe this will need careful monitoring and it is of course likely to lead to major traffic delays on the Oxford Road whilst the upgrade takes place.

  • Winning season opener for Thame United

FOR the first time in six years, Thame United secured three points on the opening day of the season as they defeated Milton United 1-0 in a game that United controlled from start to finish.

Not only did manager Mark West give full debuts to Henry Owen, Craig Faulconbridge and Nick Dugmore, he also introduced a new 3-5-2 formation. And it did not take long for the Thame players to adapt to the formation as they dominated the opening exchanges, albeit chances were few and far between. Indeed the best chance in the opening quarter came after only four minutes when a cross from Shannon Jesson beat the home keeper and came back off the post before being cleared to safety.

The next chance did not arrive until the 32nd minute when a free kick in to the box was met by the head of Ellis Hercules whose powerful header was pushed over the bar by Griffiths. Jesson then went close three minutes later with a strike that went wide of the goal, before United failed to take advantage of a goal mouth scramble in the 39th minute.

With the game score less at half time, United eventually broke the deadlock three minutes in to the second half. A Jesson free kick from the right was met by a combination of Hercules and Owen with the latter getting the final touch and heading the ball beyond Griffiths. It was no less than United deserved and Ben Gray nearly extended the lead four minutes later, with a header at the far post pushed wide by a defender. Faulconbridge then forced an excellent save from Griffiths on 73 minutes, pushing a shot around the post from an acute angle, before a similar Jesson effort was also pushed wide on 85 minutes.

Indeed, it was only in the last five minutes that the home side put United under any real pressure – up until which time the back three of Owen, Hercules and Dugmore had marshalled the home strikers well. Even then Lee Farrow in the Thame goal, was rarely troubled as United held on for the three points.
Next up for United are Binfield, who visit the ASM Stadium on Tuesday night (11/08), 7:45pm kick off.

FEWER DISTURBANCES AT SOUTHERN ROAD RECREATION GROUND

The Southern Road Recreation Ground, which has been an area of concern for some time now regarding low level anti-social behaviour, especially outside the football changing rooms, has seen fewer disturbances from young people gathering in motor vehicles, since more patrols have been carried out in the area.

“However,” reported Natalie, “there is still a significant number of young people frequenting within the recreational area. We would like to reiterate that this area is a designated ‘No alcohol zone’ and we continue to challenge young people and seize alcohol when seen.”

    THE POWER OF TWITTER

seans_choice_crendon_bedsPCSOs were recently called to Naseby Close, Thame, following a spate of stone throwing at objects and windows on some of the properties. THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

The local police have seen a slight increase in Thefts from Vehicles (vehicle parts) and are advising residents to take care when locking their vehicles and where possible, to park vehicles on a driveway or somewhere that is well lit.
