FOLLOWING reports in local and national press, and TV news coverage about the closure of Thame’s Tourist Information
Centre, the mayor of Thame, Cllr David Laver, has issued a statement.
The statement reads:”The recent debate about the closure of Thame?s Tourist Information Centre (TIC) seems to be generating more heat than light. The TIC has over the years provided a valuable service to the town. South Oxfordshire District Council, for reasons which have been aired, has decided that it can no longer fund the centre.
“Over a long period, we as councillors have seen a benefit in combining all the information sources in Thame at the One Stop Shop. The present site in the Town Hall is limited for space. However, the Council has decided to set up a Tourist Information Point to provide local information services that the TIC used to provide. For this we will receive no additional funding.
“I recently picked up a tourist leaflet for Oxfordshire provided by the District Councils which gave the address for Tourist Information at the Town Hall. Someone seems to have anticipated this move.
“We do not feel that at present we have the resources to provide all of those services including Ticket Sales, but we will keep this under review. In the short term, it may be possible for Thame Players and others to set up a desk in the Town Hall manned by volunteers to sell tickets.
“Please be assured that Town Councillors would like to offer what assistance we can to all of the organisations within the town”.
NB Thame retailer, Keith Slater, has offered to act as a ticket agency for local entertainment groups from his shop, Essence, in Buttermarket Thame.
INSTALLATION of the eagerly awaited CCTV scheme for Thame, is due to start on Monday, January 16.

EMERGENCY planners in Oxfordshire will call on the expertise of the Women?s Institute to help care for people affected by a major incident in the county.
The WI has been added to the list of organisations who will respond to an incident, along with the emergency services, local councils and many other organisations.
John Kelly, Oxfordshire County Council?s Emergency Planning Officer, said: “We are pleased that the WI network is to offer its expertise and augment the work of the organisations who are already signed up to help in an emergency.
“In the present security climate and with the threat of severe weather, numbers of volunteers throughout the communities of Oxfordshire will help the responding agencies. We hope to use WI volunteers in our rest centres and in their own communities during any severe weather incidents as well as for responding to other major incidents.”
POLICE in Thame have reported a relatively trouble-free Christmas and New Year, despite fears that extended opening times for pubs and other premises licensed to sell alcohol, would increase drunkeness and criminality.
Inspector Stuart Dunbar, from Thame Police Station, told ThameNews.Net: “After a slight increase in minor disorder during late November/early December, I tasked officers for high visibilty patrols in the town centre and we visited all the main licensed premises to see what their arrangements were for Christmas and the New Year.
“Despite an increase in the number of people about over Christmas and New Year, their were no arrests. We had only one minor alternation between two people who knew each other and that was it.
“I would like to thank landlords in the town for behaving so responsibly and contributing to what was a pleasant surprise for us!”
Thame United 1, Leighton Town 2 – 7/1/06
THAME?s young team stay at the foot of the table after a match which either side could have won.
Both sides went close in a goalless first half. On 14 minutes Leighton?s James Kidd was unlucky to see his free kick hit the crossbar with the Thame keeper, Paul Searl beaten. Just before half time Thame?s Darren Moore found himself through on goal, but with only the keeper to beat, put his shot wide.
The second half was 15 minutes old when Ben Freeman came on to replace Alex Stewart. Freeman moved into his usual midfield role whilst Gavin Lane, who until recently has played as a full back, replaced Stewart up front. A minute later Leighton broke the deadlock when Andy Fagan made a good run to the right by-line before pulling the ball back to Paul Reed, who?s well-placed shot from the edge of the area found the Thame net.
Eleven minutes later Michael Chennells exploited a defensive gap on the left and hit Lieghton?s second from 10 yards. Thame pressed forward and were rewarded in the 90th minute when Luke Fisher met a Freeman free kick to fire home from an acute angle. The final minutes saw frantic action in front of the Leighton goal but Leighton defended well and Thame were unable to equalise.
Thame United: Searl, Eason, N. Rhodes, Bradley, Lane (Capt.), N. Stewart, Connelly (Fisher), A. Rhodes (Boland), A. Stewart (Freeman), Moore, Groves.
Thame United do not have a fixture next Saturday 14th January. Their next game is on Saturday 21st when Bedworth United visit Buckingham Road Stadium.
RESIDENTS in South Oxfordshire can now watch council meetings from the comfort of their own home, or anywhere else over the internet.
SODC has installed cameras in its council chamber to broadcast planning, cabinet and council meetings on a regular basis. Live and recorded meetings will be available via the Council?s web site and viewers can send comments in during the broadcasts which will occur in real time. The council is particularly keen to receive people?s views on the quality and usefulness of the webcasts.
The first meetings to broadcast live are:
Planning Wednesday 11 January at 6pm
Cabinet Thursday 12 January at 6pm
Planning Wednesday 25 January at 6pm

to access webcasts.
Webcasting is the broadcast of video and audio over the internet ? put simply it is the same as watching TV but through an internet connection. By webcasting meetings, the Council aims to provide local residents who cannot attend meetings with an opportunity to play a part in the local democratic process, and to get involved in the decisions affecting their lives.
John Cotton, Cabinet member with responsibility for Information Technology, said:”By introducing this innovative webcasting service, South Oxfordshire District Council is leading the way in delivering better services for local residents.
“Webcasts are an excellent way to give the wider community, not just those who can attend in person, an insight into how decisions are made, and highlight the work councillors undertake on the behalf of local residents. By broadcasting meetings live, the local government decision process becomes more open and transparent.”

2nd Team Match Report
CHINNOR seconds move back into top spot in the league with their win against Marlow and the loss Oxford Harlequins suffered at the hands of Windsor.
Tom Woods, Chinnor 2nds, started off the New Year as they finished the last, with a good win against Marlow 2nds 22points to 14.
The team was without their captain due to injury, although he was on the sideline shouting support and abuse.
Marlow put out their strongest team of the season and were really up for game. It was a very physical game played by two good teams giving their all, with some very good attacking and defending play by both teams.
It wasn?t until the 15th minute before Chinnor took the lead after some inspirational play by the forwards, followed by the backs for Richard Williams to score and was converted by Adam White.
It was then the turn of Marlow to draw even in the thirtieth minute with a converted try. However, this was short lived when Chinnor counter-attacked and after some fantastic back line passing, Adam White joined the line from full back to score in the corner.
The first half finished with Chinnor ahead 12 points to 7.
The second half was as hard as the first with the game going back and forth, until the ref missed a blatant knock on. Chinnor stopped for the expected scrum and one of Marlow?s players ran after the ball, picked it up and scored under the posts. Marlow took the lead 14points to 12.
This really fired up the Chinnor boys and it was the turn of James Dollery to break through their backs to score, which was well converted by Adam White and Chinnor went ahead 19 points to 14.
The game was still too close to call, despite Chinnor showing signs of having control, but it took a mistake by Marlow which gave Chinnor a penalty that was converted into points by Adam White and Chinnor finished the game 22 points to 14.
This was a very hard game to have after the Christmas break, but I feel it has really helped Chinnor to get focused for the second half of the season

OXFORDSHIRE County Council has stepped in to save a successful child accident prevention scheme under threat because of lack of funding.
The Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools (IMPS) is run by the John Radcliffe Hospital and is delivered to 10-year-olds in Oxfordshire schools. But the programme, currently funded through a Charitable Trust, was facing problems securing funding in Oxfordshire for next year.
