ROTARY CLUB. A member of the Haddenham and District Rotary Club has submitted the following report: ?On Wednesday 7th September Haddenham and District Rotary Club delivered against their commitment to ?Service above Self? by presenting the money raised at the Waddesdon Horse Event and the Haddenham Christmas Santa to local deserving causes. Immediate past President Alan Dichler made donations to the following recipients: Age UK Buckinghamshire (Mike Brookes), Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs (Jeremy Mulkern), Florence Nightingale Hospice, Aylesbury (Karen Shardlow), Ickford School Science Project (John Ronane), Life Education Centres, Thames Valley (Ellen Goodwin), [Thame] Lighthouse (Linda Newton), Monks Risborough Cricket Club (Mohammed Amjad), Snakemoor Nature Reserve, Haddenham (Robyn Thorogood), Tetsworth Little Kites (Pre-school) (Adrian Cannon), Thame Air Training Corps (Colin Anderson and 3 cadets)?
Donations will be made at a later date to Waddesdon Village Hall and the Rotary Club of Thame. Alan also presented trophies to the top sponsors of the Horse Event; they were represented by Clair Mortimer who was the senior top sponsor.

Each recipient gave short but interesting explanations of the role of their organisation in our community. Adrian Cannon of Tetsworth Little Kites revealed that he was about to climb the three highest mountains in Great Britain in support of his cause.
As he closed the meeting President Peter Davis (the 24th president) reminded everyone that Rotary was ?good fun and useful? and encouraged all who were not yet Rotarians to consider attending the inaugural meeting of a new club to be formed in the district. This club will be targeted at those younger men and women who wish to contribute to their local community and the developing world while having fun. There will be a meeting of interested people at the Rose and Thistle at 7 for 7.30pm next Wednesday (September 28). As Peter said ?The current club is aging and we owe it to the community to enable local men and women to carry forward the Rotary ethic for another 25 years?.?
RISING SUN. Just over a year after taking over the running of the Rising Sun pub, Haddenham, (for Oak Taverns), Rob and Miranda are delighted that the pub has received a mention in the 2012 CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Good Beer Guide for the first time for many years. Rob says that all their ales are served from the barrel (as are real ciders) and the pub has 3-4 different ales on sale at any one time – from the Vale Brewery in Brill and also guest ales. Rob and Miranda live on the premises with their 2 young daughters and are aiming to run a family friendly establishment. There are live music nights once every 2 weeks or so, featuring different types of music: jazz, rock ?n? roll, blues etc – look out for notices around the village. Look out too for community notices – which will soon have a dedicated notice board – just inside the entry lobby.

ROAD WORKS. The long awaited work to resurface Tacks Lane/Fort End/Banks Rd (from the Rising Sun, Haddenham,to the junction of Banks Rd with Stokes Croft) will be taking place next week. The road is due to be closed or partially closed from September Wednesday 28 to Friday 30. A diversion will go via Thame Rd/Station Rd/Churchway.

The main jobs to be tackled will be general tidying up, clearing around trees etc. Forks, spades or any digging tools you can bring will be useful.

Sat 24th Ready Steady Cook Off! Michelin-starred chef Toby Hill, who grew up in Haddenham, is hosting a cookery event (10.30am – 2.30pm) at Hardings Restaurant, Aylesbury College. THAME schools are being reminded to sign up this new term (September, 2011) for a charity world record breaking attempt for the most people signing and singing simultaneously.

SignHealth, the national healthcare charity for Deaf people, is inviting schools from Thame to register now for the event, which takes place on February 8, 2012.

Steve Powell, Chief Executive at SignHealth, said: ?Earlier this year 94,489 children took part in our sign2sing 2011 event, including pupils from Thame, and smashed the Guinness World Records?. The previous record was 13,418.

?On February 8, 2012, we are once again inviting schoolchildren to take part in the world record attempt for the most people signing and singing a song at the same time.

?News of the event is spreading rapidly and there are already more than 300 schools registered. We need a lot more schools if we are going to smash our current record and involve around 150,000 youngsters, so we are urging schools to get in touch now.?

The event is designed to raise awareness of deafness and the work of SignHealth, as well as acting as a fundraiser for the charity through sponsorship from businesses and a suggested donation of

  • 06/09/11…..Thame picked to pilot new planning powers

THAME has been chosen, along with Woodcote in South Oxfordshire, to be among the first areas to produce Neighbourhood Plans, under a new power being introduced as part of the Localism Bill.

Neighbourhood Planning will give local people an opportunity to decide how development will evolve in their area. Plans should be in line with the local planning authority’s core strategy and can include preferred locations for housing, shops, offices and schools.

Thame and Woodcote are among 36 areas of the country, including towns, villages and business parks, that have been picked by the Government to pilot the new scheme. As part of the ?front-runners? scheme South Oxfordshire District Council will receive a grant of

  • 02/09/11….Broken heart brings joy to Thame bookshop

APPROACHED by the daughter of an eminent professor who had recently died, the Oxfam book shop in Thame was faced with a tale of a broken heart and a library full of scientific academic books.

The daughter’s step-father, Professor John Ziman, had a distinguished career based in Physics research but later in life wrote extensively on the social implication of science and how scientists should be morally accountable for their work – a notion that these days now dictates much scientific research.

Professor Ziman, the ultimate ‘high flyer’ held many prestigious professorships at Bristol, Cambridge and Wellington, New Zealand universities, and produced texts on electrons and phonos, the theory of solids and advanced quantum theory before being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1976.

The family wished to donate this library of knowledge and hard work to Oxfam where the academic work of both professors could be shared and passed on.

In awe of the library and the story of the eminent man behind it, the Thame Oxfam team carefully removed the books from the library, researched them individually and cellophaned each one to protect it. The books will be offered for sale throughout September and feature in a special window display ready for the key month for other academics and university undergraduates.

The sentimentality of his character had its effects, as after his death, Professor Ziman’s wife, Professor Joan Soloman, did not wish to leave the home they had together and later passed away, by what her doctor- daughter could only describe as a broken heart.

  • 02/09/11….Grant gets Thame’s Neighbourhood Plan off to a flying start

SUCCESS in acquiring a grant under the Neighbourhood Planning Front Runners scheme means that a Neighbourhood Plan for Thame will get off to a flying start.

Thame Town Council feels that a Neighbourhood Plan is essential to influence the shape of the town over the next 20+ years and has appointed a Planning and Urban Design company to work with the community in preparing a plan for Thame. THREE new display boards have been installed in Thame today, to help shoppers find there way around the town’s shopping centre.
