  • Texting Wheatlely crash driver found guilty

A WOMAN who admitted texting at least 20 times whilst driving to Oxford, was found guilty this afternoon, of causing death by dangerous driving.
Phillipa Curtis, 21, from Suffolk, hit the back of 24-year-old Victoria McBryde’s stationary car on the A40 near Wheatley, Oxfordshire, on November 30, last year.
Miss McBryde had stopped beside the road after puncturing a tyre.
Curtis was told that she would almost certainly receive a custodial sentence.

In a statement after the verdict, Victoria’s mother begged other drivers: “… never answer your phone when driving as you could be facing a prison sentence like Philippa Curtis is.
“I am pleased by the verdict of guilty of death by dangerous driving.
“Although my heart has shattered since Tory?s death receiving this guilty verdict means my process of grief can now begin.
“For the sake of looking at a text message, that simple glance has taken my beautiful daughter away.”

  • Struggling market traders ask Thame council for help

LIKE retailers generally, the market traders of Thame it seems are feeling the pinch in the current economic down turn, and have turned to Thame Town Council for help.
Secretary of the market traders, Chris Hurdman, told town councillors that many of his colleagues were struggling to survive and that five of them were leaving the market after Christmas. He appealed to the council to consider at least putting a freeze on the traders’ rents and if possible, to reduce the rent for the next year or two to help them weather the storm.

The Chairman of the Thame market traders, Mike Braun, told ThameNews.Net today: “Five years ago, if someone left the market, there was a waiting list of 14 – 15 traders to replace them, now we are quite desperate to find replacements.
“We must make sure that we do not lose the market in Thame, or that it becomes like Banbury, half what it was and looking a mess, by offering affordable rents to help attract new traders.
“At the moment, the people of Thame are supporting us and we are just about all right but we need to attract a new breed of stall-holder. Any help the council can give us, would be much appreciated.”

The council agreed to meet in the new year to consider the market traders’ request.

  • E-fit of 280 bus armed robber released

THE Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses and have issued an E-fit of a man they would like to speak to following a series of armed robberies in Oxfordshire.

The E-fit is an image of the man who robbed driver of the number 280 ARRIVA bus in London Road in Wheatley at around 9.40pm last Wednesday (1/12).

This robbery was followed by another which happened at around 3.30am on Thursday when an Asian man got onto an Oxford Tube coach at the bus stop near to the Green Road roundabout in London Road, Headington. He threatened the driver with what was believed to be a gun and demanded cash, hitting the driver over the head with the weapon.

A taxi driver was then robbed in Northway on Thursday night (11/12) at around 9.50pm when he was on his way to collect a passenger. At around 5pm on Saturday (13/12), a man holding a gun went into Ladbrokes in London Road, Headington and told a member of staff to hand over cash.

On Sunday (14/12) at around 9.44pm, a man was in the car park behind the Co-operative store in Summertown when another man threatened him with what is believed to be a handgun and demanded he hand over his belongings.

Det Insp Simon Morton, investigating the robberies, said: ?Money is the motive for these robberies but on each occasion the amount of money that has been stolen has been minimal because bus drivers and taxi drivers don?t carry much cash on them for exactly this reason.
?This E-fit is of the man who robbed the bus in Wheatley and I believe that this robbery could be linked to the others but am keen keeping an open mind an investigating every possible avenue.
?I believe that the robber is local and an opportunist and would like to take this opportunity to ask the public to remain vigilant and contact the police if they see anyone acting suspiciously. I appeal to anyone who might recognise the image or have any information about any of the robberies to contact me.?

Anyone with any information about any of these incidents is asked to contact Det Insp Morton at Oxford CID via 0845 8 505 505, or if you don?t want to talk to the police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
