  • 13/01/12….Town says ‘Good-bye’ to Ben

IT was standing room only in St Mary’s Church in Thame this afternoon, as friends, relations, shop-keepers, town councillors, firemen and publicans quietly filed in to pay their respects, and to say farewell to a very unique young Thame character who has passed away.

Ben Guest, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumour two years previously and was waiting to have an operation, died at home on Wednesday, January 4, following a seizure.

Terry Guest, father of 34 year-old Ben, spoke movingly of how he struggled at times to cope with his son, but how his enthusiastic nature and willingness to please touched so many people in his family and in the town.

Everyone you speak to has a story about Ben, and Terry’s recollection of an incident, when Ben disappeared from his till at the rear of Woolworths where he worked, was typical. Ben would often offer to help customers carry their purchases to their car, but when remonstrated for leaving his post for longer than usual, and asked by the manager where he had been, he replied: “Broadwaters Road!”

“When you look up at the sky tonight, you’ll see an extra star,” Terry told the congregation. “That star will be Ben, and he’ll be organising all the other stars just like he always liked to organise things down here.”

The whole congregation clapped as Ben’s casket, draped with flowers and his beloved QPR football scarf, was carried out through the back door of the church to its final resting place, in the sunniest corner of the church yard.

    RIP Ben

  • 12/01/12….’Sustainability appraisal’ of Thame Town Plan consultation available

THE ‘Scoping report’ for the Thame Town Plan Sustainability Appraisal (explanation follows!) is now available for anyone to examine and to respond to.

It will be available for a total of 5 weeks, with a deadline for responses of February 20, 2012. The consultation response questionnaire can be used to provide comment. Hard copies are also available to view at the Town Hall and Library in Thame and the South Oxfordshire District Council Offices in Wallingford.

The sustainability appraisal is a separate process that runs alongside the production of the Thame Town Plan. The appraisal will be used to ensure that the final plan is the most sustainable option for the development of Thame.

“The scoping report is the first stage in this process and sets the relevant policy, baseline data, sustainability issues and develops a framework which will be used in the next stages to help assess development options.”

SO, WHAT IS A SCOPING DOCUMENT? This is the best explanation I could find: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080402092342AAwyjgs Hope that helps!

  • 11/01/12…Returning a faulty gift

WHATEVER time of year ? be it Christmas or summer ? the goods you buy must be of satisfactory quality (not faulty). If not, you?re entitled to your money back if you?re quick. If you aren?t quick you could be offered a repair or replacement instead to put things right. The shop will usually want to see the receipt to prove that it was bought at that store.

It is the purchaser of the gift who has the right to return the goods. However, if you?ve got the receipt the shop might be flexible and let you get a replacement without involving the purchaser. It might be worth calling the customer services department of the store first, to check if they will swap the present, even though you did not buy it.

    Tip
When buying something as a present, always ask the store for a gift receipt!
