  • 22/08/13 Thame council dissatisfied with new housing development plan

THAME Town Council is to recommend to the local planning authority, SODC, a Holding Objection to a development plan for 175 new homes in the town, until it reflects additional aspects of the Thame Neighbourhood Plan.

After discussion of a REPORT by the council’s Planning Consultant, Jake Collenge, the council voted to include three more issues; possible light pollution from street lamps, better footpath linkages to the public rights of way from Thame Park across the way from the proposed development and improving the safety of the pedestrian/cycle route from the proposed site (Site D – Land to the west of Thame Park Road) to the Phoenix Trail and through the Jane Morbey Road development.

Central to Jake Collinge’s report was the point that the plan: “…lacks any clear pathway as to how the design will reflect the qualities of Thame, and how it will be implemented.”

As well as some technical ‘inconsistances’ in the plans, he draws attention to a missed opportunity to include a riverside walk near the boundary of the development where the Cuttlebrook runs, as aspired to in the Thame Neighbourhood Plan.

(See link to REPORT above for his other recommendations)

Cllr David Dodds said that there was ‘considerable heartache’ to residents in part of Youens Drive, by Atlett employees who use the cul-de-sac, and that some sort of traffic management needed to happen there.

“This plan has got to be cast iron in reflecting the Neighbourhood Plan,” he added, “before we can accept it.”

The amended report will need to be ratified at the next full town council meeting.

There is just one week left of the public consultation on the plan. See PREVIOUS NEWS ITEM

  • 21/08/13 MP will tour 30 villages in September

FOLLOWING the success of his Village Tours over the past two years, John Howell MP will again be ‘on tour’ in September this year. The tour will take in 30 villages around the constituency giving the MP time to listen to concerns on the doorstep.

John commented: “It is important to listen to what people have to say where they are. There is no better way of doing this than by coming round to their village and engaging in conversation. Based on our experience of the last two years, this brings politics alive for people. It is a chance to meet people informally, to discuss issues and hear their concerns.

“I get to go to many of the over 100 communities I represent each year. But there are still smaller communities it is difficult to engage with. I am pleased to have this chance to catch up with them.”

The tours will take place between 16 September and 27 September, the villages local to Thame particularly, being visited by John on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27, as follows:

    Thursday 26th September
    14.30 Kingston Blount
    15.30 Tetsworth

    Friday 27th September
    10.00 Drayton St Leonard
    14.30 Wheatley – ASDA
    15.30 Tiddington
    16.30 Great Haseley
    17.30 Little Milton

THE Mayor of Thame, Peter Lambert, and John Howell MP, were among the visitors to Thame Market this morning to meet traders and find out about the work of local community groups and charities.

The Market Community Day is held once a year by the traders, who invite community groups, charities and volunteer organisations to take free space on the market to raise funds and promote their cause.

Among the groups taking stalls were The Florence Nightingale Hospice, Thame CAB with their ‘human fruit machine’ game, a church group selling cakes to raise funds for a clinic in Ghana being run by an Doctor from Thame, and the Prostate Cancer charity, promoting their 5-a-side football tournament next weekend.

  • 20/08/13 ‘Swap shop’ group wins national award

THE environment organisation behind the regular Thame ‘Swap Shops’ has won a national Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2013.

CAG, or the Community Action Group Project, based in Oxford, is dedicated to reducing waste, and Swap shops held throughout the county are just one way that local people can find a new home for unwanted items that might otherwise go to landfill.

The 21st Century Thame Partnership is a member of CAG and its Environmental Working Group regularly organises Swap Shops in the town.

CAG will find out whether its won a gold, silver or bronze award at the awards ceremony at the House of Commons on November 11.

  • 20/08/13 Thame Show wants your views

AFTER a very disappointing turnout for this year’s Thame Show, due, the organisers believe, to the very hot weather and competition from other events, the views of the public are now being sought.

The overwhelming impression so far, say the organisers, is that most people want the show to return to September.

There is a PDF of the questionaire on the Thame show website, but you will need to print if off and either take it to the town hall, or into the show office in North Street. It cannot be completed electronically!

The show organisers are giving away two family tickets in a prize draw for those who take part in the survey.

  • 19/08/13 Thame man convicted of driving & drug offences

A 25-year-old Thame man, arrested after driving erratically along Thame Road, Longwick, has pleaded guilty to driving and drug offences.

Ian Field of Horton Avenue, Thame, was sentenced at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court last Monday (12/8) for one count of driving while unfit through drugs and a further count of being in possession of class C controlled drug, Ketamine.

He is to be electronically tagged until November 11, 2013, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £135. Field has also been disqualified from driving for 24 months.

On the morning of his arrest, August 29, 2012, at 7.10am, Field was reported to police having been spotted driving erratically by a police officer on his way to work. When stopped by roads policing officers, he failed a field impairment test and was found with Ketamine in his possession.

On arrest and testing, his blood was found to contain Ketamine at a concentration of 0.37 milligrams per litre and Norketamine at a concentration of 1.2 milligrams per litre.

Roads policing officer, PC Kay Dickinson said: “Roads policing officers are trained to deal with drivers who are impaired by drugs and will deal with them robustly. If members of the public suspect anyone of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, they should contact the police immediately.”

If you don’t want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

  • 19/08/13 Thame ‘foodies’ join Folk at Towersey Festival 2013

ALL the ingredients for a fantastic Towersey Festival are coming together, with only two days to go, and this year, some of the Thame Food Festival regulars, including Sally Dickinson of What’s Cooking and Lotte Duncan of Lotte’s Kitchen, have gathered up some like-minded growers and producers to bring their finest fresh fruit and vegetables, great local cheeses as well as bread, pies, cakes and more to festival-goers camping out at the event.

If you’re planning to escape to the unique experience that is the 49th Towersey Festival this week – August 22 to 26, you can really lose yourself in what’s been described as: “another, lovelier world”.

This year’s event is set to outshine all that have gone before, with the best music to listen to, dance to and sing to; amazing street art to admire and craft fairs to browse; wall to wall children’s activities and village walks and, of course, a wide variety of foods from around the world to tuck into.

As well as some great produce from a close to home, there’ll be some cracking real ales from The Vale Brewery (who incidentally are about to reveal the winner of the competition to name a special beer being brewed for the Thame Food Festival – watch this space), promising to bring a very special, first ever daily local produce market to the event.
