  • Message from the ex Mayor who launched Thame Tidy Days

Hi Guys I hope you all had a great summer!
I know its a long way off but the date for the next Tidy Thame Day and Mucking Out Moreton will be Sunday,  March 30, 2014!
It is sports relief the week before so I didn’t want to clash with that.

Please let me know if I have missed something that it could clash with ,and if you want to be involved this year in the planning or on the day.
We have a budget this year through a town council grant, sponsorship and fundraising so we can plan to have skips, vans and other equipment and maybe planting and landscaping for the gardeners amongst you, as well as resources to advertise the day better.

Please let me know your thoughts.
    Onwards and Upwards!
    Adam Buckland

  • Funding opportunities for community organisations

COMMUNITY Organisations in South Oxfordshire have the chance to apply for up to £15,000 to fund community projects like improvements to buildings or new equipment, through the district council’s Community Investment Fund. The council is offering the grants to community-based organisations, including parish and town councils, over two rounds, and this second round commenced on October 1.  Organisations are encouraged to apply for a share of just under £218,000 to fund their projects.

Projects the council has helped to fund through the scheme in the last round include improvements to Garsington Sport and Social Club, installing a climbing wall at 1st Goring Scout Hut, and play area equipment in Moulsford amongst others.

The funding is available for capital projects such as building work, new facilities and equipment but cannot be used for revenue costs such as running costs, repairs or maintenance.

The council is encouraging anyone with a project in mind to attend a pre-application workshop which offers advice to those applying to the scheme. The workshop will be held at the council’s offices in Crowmarsh Gifford on the evening of  November 7.

For more information and to register to attend,  email:  grants@southandvale.gov.uk

  • Share your commute to share the savings

COMMUTERS  in Oxfordshire could save more than £1,900 a year by joining the county’s lift sharing network, Liftshare.com.

According to Oxfordshire County Council who are promoting the scheme during Life Share Week, which runs from 7-11 October, figures show that 9,667 people have signed up to Oxfordshire Liftshare and there are over 8,000 people sharing regular journeys to and from work, helping cut congestion, petrol bills and emissions in the process.

OCC states: ” Members have been sharing thousands of journeys since the scheme began in 2010, saving more than 9,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from Oxfordshire’s transport emissions. If you haven’t tried lift sharing yet then this week, National Car Share Week, could be the ideal time to give it a go.”

To find out more and to sign up to Oxfordshire Lift Share for free, visit: www.oxfordshireliftshare.com to link up with others making the same journey. The website provides the opportunity to choose a travelling companion and is open to both drivers and non-drivers.

    Five reasons to start sharing:

    1. In the first half of 2013 the average price of unleaded petrol rose by 13% whilst weekly earnings have only increased
        by 1%

    2. The UK is the third most expensive place to buy diesel in the world

    3. There are 1 million car seats available to share in Britain every day on the Liftshare.com network

    4. According to the AA the average British family spends more on fuel than they do on food

  • Visiting theatre group will perform Jane Eyre at the TAL

AS part of the Thame Arts and Literary Festival,  MYRIAD PRODUCTIONS LTD, will be performing JANE EYRE, By Charlotte Brontë, adapted for the stage by Connie Stephens. The performance will begin at 7.45 pm at The Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame, on Sunday, October 20.

ORPHANED  whilst still a baby and adopted by a kindly Uncle who promptly died, Jane Eyre has never known a loving home. Raised by her Aunt with cruel indifference at best and sent away to Lowood School where starvation, frostbite and typhus are part of the daily curriculum, Jane is ostensibly on course for a brief life of misery and depravation.

But Jane Eyre is special. Her nature strong, warm, unique: her sense of self unshakeable. She will not be defeated.

After eight years at Lowood – two as a teacher – she applies for work as a governess and is offered a position at Thornfield Hall, occasional home of the enigmatic Mr Rochester. To her surprise, he quickly appears to take a keen interest in her, expressing a sense of affinity so strong and indisputable that Jane finds herself helplessly compelled.

But all is not as it seems, for Mr Rochester conceals a dreadful secret within the walls of Thornfield, a secret so sinister, so damning, that its exposure can spell only devastation for Jane.

So begins one or the most masterfully erotic romances ever written, as the genius of Charlotte Brontë weaves gothic horror with the universal search for truth, the battle to retain your individuality within love, to follow your heart and head in tandem, and the shattering consequences of choosing a life-companion who is neither friend nor equal.

  • First defeat of the season for ‘out of sorts’ Chinnor

CHINNOR RFC suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday (04/10), going down 20-13 away at Canterbury.

Chinnor never really got going in this match and looked out of sorts, particularly in the first half. This is to take nothing away from Canterbury who were direct and forceful throughout the match.

The scoring opened in the eighth minute when Millett for Chinnor scored a penalty goal to put the visitors 3-0 ahead. It then took until the 70th minute until Chinnor scored again. In the meantime, Canterbury got on with the game and scored their first try in the 13th minute from nippy scrum-half, Grant Kay. Although the conversion was missed, Canterbury soon increased their score when Charlie Harding went over for a try, converted by Hilton, to put the home side 12-3 ahead on the 20th minute. Now with a taste for the line, Harding went over again just three minutes later to put Canterbury ahead 17-3 – a score they maintained until half-time.

Throughout the first half, Chinnor had only visited the Canterbury half just once (for their early penalty) and thereafter were trapped in their own half until the referee allowed them a much-needed break.

Just after the restart, Canterbury increased their lead by another three points when man of the match, Charlie Harding, popped over a penalty goal to make the lead 20-3 in the 41st minute. Thereafter Chinnor began to get back into the match but met stout resistance when scoring opportunities seemed possible. Chinnor made five replacements in a short period of time in an effort to get something from the match. In the end, fly half Millett went for broke and a mazy run saw him dot down for Chinnor’s only try of the match on the 70th minute. His touchline conversion closed the gap to 20-10. Canterbury then scored a good try only for the score to be cancelled on a touch judge intervention for foul play. Chinnor upped the pressure and were awarded a penalty which Millett converted for a 20-13 score which remained until the final whistle.

Although Chinnor had a better second half, Canterbury’s dominance in the first half particularly, led to the home victory. Canterbury’s Harding was a significant influence on the match and was clearly the best player on the park. The better side won and Chinnnor must learn not to kick aimlessly to opposition players prepared to run the ball back and regroup from the whole experience. Their better second-half performance offers some comfort and they will be grateful to have earned a losing bonus point.
